  1. I was hoping to compare the POI's from CN2008 to previous versions. I recently "upgraded" to CN 2008 and it seems that some of the previous listings have been dropped even though they are still there. I'm not sure that my "upgrade" to CN2008 was worth the money... especially with the loss of one of my unlock codes.
  2. I thought for certain someone out here would answer this.
  3. Is there a list of the Points Of Interest for City Navigator 2008 (or v8.0)? Or any way to see the list in a text file?
  4. I think you are correct Cacheoholic. Based on my conversation yesterday with tech support. I was told that all of the licensing changes regarding the software are being implemented from the vendor and not Garmin. However, it would seem that Garmin would have enough influence to sway them some.
  5. In addition to reducing the unlock codes from 2 down to 1, there is another policy change that I was informed of yesterday. I have two units, a 76C and a 76Cx. I had previously installed City Navigator on both of them, using the codes supplied with the program. Yesterday, I decided that I would purchase the upgrade to v2008 for my 76Cx. After logging into MyGarmin account, it indicated that there were no updates available for that unit. I called technical support and inquired about this. I was informed that since my 76C was registered first, it was my “Primary Unit”. And that because the unlock code policy had changed since I purchased CN8, that only my “Primary Unit” was eligible for the upgrade. I explained that I only used the 76C as my backup and that I would like to install it on my 76Cx. He said that was not possible and that I would have to purchase a full version of CN2008 (v9). Well, to make a long story short, after asking to speak to the supervisor, and pleading my case, he agreed to sell my the full version for my 76Cx at the upgrade price. I know that I could have purchased the upgrade from another source, but the point is that Garmin’s policy seems a bit backwards.
  6. I have tried that. That will work only when I have the time to sit down and create a detailed route in Mapsource and then transfer it to the unit. I have dozens of customers around the Chicago area and since they have started a large construction project on one of the major expressways (a 3 year project) I want to avoid it if possible. When I leave one customer and want to navigate to another, the unit will not recognize that I want to avoid the that particular section of the expressway and send right on it.
  7. I repeat: Rockin Roddy, you have repeatedly made your point. We get it. We really do. I assume that you never call CS for any reason for fear of driving the prices higher? Way to live in fear. CS is… well just that, CUSTOMER SERVICE. Taking care of the customer is their job. Some companies do it better than others. And for this they are rewarded with repeat customers, long term customers, and the best advertising that they can buy…referrals. So you go ahead and keep using your Velcro, while the rest of us use the great Customer Service Garmin provides. We get your point… we just disagree. Let it go.

  9. Garmin Mapsource/CN8 Avoidance Question. Has anyone figured out a way to get the “Avoidance” information to transfer to the GPSr? I am not talking about avoiding carpool lanes, U-Turns and such, but rather the advanced feature of avoiding certain roads or areas. In Mapsource this function works and will route around the area or avoid the road in question. However when I transfer to the GPSr (76Cx) it does not seem to send the “Avoidance” information. I have contacted Garmin and they have not been able to answer this, but I thought that some of the clever individuals out here might have figured it out. Thanks for any info.
  10. Hello, I don't believe that their "Plus" versions include certain features that the standard Garmin 76Cx has. Be sure to inquire if it specifically has the "Geocaching" mode. Better safe than sorry.
  11. I am selling my Garmin 76C. You can't tell it from new... not a scratch or scuff anywhere. It has all the latest software updates. It has always had a screen protector on it. It comes with the original box and contents. I am asking $225.00, and that includes shipping to the continental United States. Paypal payment only. I have pictures if you want, but everyone knows what it looks like. Feel free to ask questions.
  12. Good Luck finding anything even close to geocaching.com. You'll be back soon... I agree with briansnat, there were only a couple of times that I found it unavailable.
  13. Thanks for the info Hogrod. Could you tell me the coordinates of your destination? I would like to try to route it and see what happens. I have had similar problems, but with CN8. I have a waypoint to a customer that I have been going to and both MG4 and CS7 got me there with no problems. When I upgraded to CN8 and navigated to that same waypoint, it had me drive right past my customer, get on the hiway, get off at the next exit, get right back on the higway (going back the way I just came from) and then to my customer. All of a sudden CN8 doesn't recognize that there is an intersection where MG4 CS6&7 did. I did report this to Garmin. I do recognize that CN8 does show some of the newer roads and subdivisions. I have been running several comparisons with the different maps.
  14. Hogrod, Where are you getting your information about the Autoroute Calculation being “very poor in comparison to the newer software”? And could you give me some of the “TONS” of roads that never existed in MetroGuide? I created a couple of routes from my home town (Wheaton, IL) to your home town (New Glarus, WI). I have created routes using City Navigator 8 and MetroGuide 4 and included both the Fastest and the Shortest routes. MetroGuide 4 produced both Faster and Shorter routes than CN8.
  15. Just for another comparison, here is the same shot from Google Earth. It looks to me like the image in MetroGuide is more accurate than CS8 or even Topo. Notice the channel going up the island and the shape of Little Island. Albeit, MG4 doesn’t provide elevations like Topo, but how critical is that info most of the time?
  16. Here is a shot of the same area in Topo.
  17. I would guess that it would work on any (Garmin) unit that has AutoRouting capabilities. It has the POI's that were current at the time, it just might not list the most recent Starbucks or latest subdivision, but 99% of the time (IMO) I find that it is great. Add that with the significantly better geographic detail and you have a winning combination... not to mention no unlock codes to deal with. So as you change and upgrade your GPSr you will not be buying new unlock codes. Here is a screen shot of Theodore Roosevelt Island near you ArtMan. Check out the detail for the trails on the Island on MG4 and then on CN8. Sorry if the images are large... trying to show some detail.
  18. You could kill two birds with one stone and find a copy of MetroGuide 4. It will give you the ability to auto route with your GPSr as well as having significantly greater geographic detail and accuracy than City Navigator. I have Garmin Topo, MetroGuide 4, City Select 6 and 7 and City Navigator 8. Trust me on this one... you will be MUCH happier with MetroGuide 4 (other versions will not auto route on the GPSr) than CN8.
  19. Absolutely! I love it when I return to my vehicle and my GPS has not been stolen!
  20. Is this the one? https://chqualitycoins.com/mm5/merchant.mvc...tegory_Code=OGSGeo Keychain
  21. Thanks Hogrod, now that really was some insightful information. The “major flaw” you were pointing out had already been addressed by the subtitle (I Guess That's Why It's Called "City" Navigator). I looked at MetroGuide 8 at the Garmin Website, and it looks like the geographic features are the same (or close to) City Navigator 8. So, I think the idea of making transparent topo maps to overlay might be the best solution for me. Thanks for taking time to provide the links.
  22. Thanks Hogrod, for the terrific suggestion. You must be a genius. I must be delusional to expect my maps to be accurate. Love the suggestion buy the Topo maps and then complain about them. Sheer brilliance!! If you had read (or comprehended) my original post, I already do have Topo, MetroGuide 4, City Select 6 &7 and City Navigator 8. My concern was when major geographic features are completely omitted from the map. What exactly do you expect from your GPSr? Please enlighten stupid, silly me.
  23. They need to get out of their vehicle once in while and take a look at the geographic features as well as the roads, hiways and McDonalds.
