  1. One of the hiders I ignore makes that case for you. At the time I read through their listings and made the decision to never go look for one they had been caching for just shy os a month and they had placed over 60 caches most appearing to be at places like Burger King. I don't want to go there for a cache. Heck, I will not even go there to eat. There are not enough caches with nice hikes left in my local to burn off the calories of a Whopper. - Rev Mike
  2. I have a nice cache that was at an very old covered bridge along a nice creek with a waterfall and some high shale cliffs. The bridge was a registered National Historic Landmark and rich in local lore. I say was because a few teenagers thought it would be fun to torch it. The bridge is a total loss but my cache was not in the bridge so it is still fine. I have disabled it because I am sure there is an arson investigation taking place and this is likely not a good time for anyone to be caught snooping around the area. I am sure the cache is still fine but I am not sure if I should archive it or not. The area is still very nice and I am sure that they will do something with the area eventually but the cache was focused on the bridge and the legends surrounding it. If you were to ask anyone that lives around here if there are any haunted places nearby this would have been the first thing off of their tongues. I am not sure if another covered bridge will be built but I know they must do something because this was the main way in and out of the area and the people living nearby will now have to drive over twenty minutes out of the way to get anywhere. Anyone interested further can read about the legend on my cache listing HERE. Has anyone else ever had their cache location muggled? - Rev Mike
  3. Constructive criticism has been offer and ingored in most of these cases. I have been doing community Geocaching workshops with another local cacher for over three years now. That is the difference between yourself and the people I speaking of. You listened to what others had to say and changed things or just archived listings. So have I. I have learned more about what makes good caches and my views and practices have changed a lot over the years. Those I am talking about have not and continue to place terrible caches. What I was asking was has anyone been so bad at hiding caches that they have come to be known for such and their caches ignored as a result? - Rev Mike
  4. That is exactly what I am talking about... And a HUGE thank you to everyone that does that. - Rev Mike
  5. That would be perhaps the most useful thing I could imagine. - Rev Mike
  6. I am interested in how many people use some of their bookmark lists to give something back to the community. Some examples of what I mean: Personal Favorite List *insert state name* EarthCaches Caches Along *insert name* Trail Ect. I usually look for "favorites" bookmarks when planning a route so I can try to see what will be the beat in whatever area I am heading to. If a cache shows up on a few of those it will automatically make it onto my route because I assume that there is something really worth seeing there. I rely heavily on "favorites" lists and pictures when deciding what to put on my routes. Yes... I do actually read every cache listing and look at pictures and bookmarks before deciding what to add to a route. I know there are better ways to plan routes but mine yields the best results for me. It is also a great feeling as a cache hider to see people add your caches to lists of their all-time favorites. So who uses a list or two in this fashion? - Rev Mike
  7. Does anyone in here have any problems with the caches of specific hiders? I know we all have our own preferences when it comes to what types of caches we like to look for and this post is not about that. It is about hiders that put out nothing but garbage. I personally have a list of hiders who have demonstrated that they really should not be in the business of hiding caches. I will never again look for another cache by one of those people. These are people that hide caches (for whatever reason - this is also not about their motives) that demonstrate terrible judgement in their placements, lack of any inspiration, foolish ALRs, obscenely inaccurate coordinates, bad ratings, unsafe locations, and any number of other things that just suck the fun out of geocaching. I have a handful of them myself... I am tired of trying to go drop a couple of travel bugs (that I have been holding on to for longer than I like) and going to the nearest cache that claims to be a regular just to find that is smaller than my GPS. I am tired of EarthCaches placed by people that don't even try to come up with any thing good. I am tired of seeing entire areas saturated with filmcans at fast food chains hidden by people just trying to make a name for themselves with the "local numbers cachers." I am tires of seeing one terrain caches in the rafters of picnic pavilions... none of the people confined to wheelchairs that I know have "go-go-gadget arms." I am tired of finding caches placed without permission. In short I am just tired of people placing caches for the sake of placing caches and not even taking the time to do it half right. Who else has hiders that have earned having anything they ever hide automatically ignored? Who has thoughts on this? One final caveat: If you reply DO NOT POST NAMES OR GC NUMBERS... this is just a general discussion. - Rev Mike
  8. Just the one I have been using for my signature everywhere for the last few years...
  9. I had a hand in that but not quite as much as who you are talking about. - Rev Mike
  10. I think that would be a great idea and think it would go over well. This is an example if how something similar, but not exactly the same, that made it into an EarthCache. It is the only one I have done or even seen that is close. - Rev Mike
  11. 1. 10 miles on foot. 2. 338 miles by road. 3. 397 miles as the crow flies. 4. 6. 5. 5 WV, MD, VA, DC, DE. 6. 11 times and it was there. 7. About four hours. - Rev Mike
  12. I can't believe the local reviewers ever allowed that to happen. That would have been shut down long ago in my area. - Rev Mike
  13. This is probably the best answer to an "I hate micros" post I've ever seen. I personally prefer regular caches myself, but nothing's wrong with micros either. I would have to agree. - Rev Mike
  14. I had a Legend until a caching buddy dropped it off a 300 foot cliff. After that I upgraded to a 60CSx and I am considering picking a Colorado now, too. - Rev Mike
  15. Just go find this cache and you are in. - Rev Mike
  16. I don't speak for the geocaching community as a whole but all of what I said I know to be true in my area and have heard as much from the actual people involved in these practices. - Rev Mike
  17. Somehow we have gotten far-far away from prople hiding caches because they were inspired to do so. My greatest wish for geocaching is that other people would have that exact same though process. This behavoir is not for "lack of imagination" but for "lack of recognition." The people responsible for covering a town with a lot of lame caches are looking to be recognized and respected by the high-numbers crowd in their area. I fight with people I know against just hiding caches for exposure. They just want people to thank them for all of the new finds at the next event. These are the same people that like finding the same caches for the numbers. The same people that foolishly believe they need to have a thousand finds of their own to be respected within their geocaching community. The other group throwing out all of those caches, im my experience, is a few from that high-numbers crowd throwing easy find stats at each other. In my area some people have started to archive caches (that I consider uninspired and lame) and submit them again as a new listing. The were not in amazing areas the first time, the often only got TFTC logs, but they are somehow worthy of a new GC#? Only so some people can log away again without feeling too much like cheaters. I am not really even active in my home area anymore because if I have not found it yet... it is just not worth the time. - Rev Mike
  18. Good lord, for the amount of whining going on here you would think someone shot down the satallites. There was a time that the maps did not even do those things that are missing. - Rev Mike
  19. If you are a premium member it will on your "My Account Details" (recent activity )page - a couple of lines below the "Build Pocket Queries" link - Rev Mike
  20. Not what we were looking for... That was not on topic nor was it necessary. No need to post the GC numbers of caches you think are lame. - Rev Mike
  21. The only real trick to using the GPS that I know of is to note the elevation at both the top and the bottom and find the difference... but that is not what is asked for... just an estimate. Also now that I have seen the listings I can see that these are not features you want to climb for a reading and the owner even says not to. Just take a guess if the owner was looking for anything more then that would be noted. An estimate is all he asks for so - if it is something reasonable and the other requirements are completed that should be good. But here is a trick NOT using the GPS - click on the map at the bottom of the page and then click on the topo tab in the top right corner. Compare the elevation you see on the map with the reading you were required to get at the bottom and that will be a very good estimate. Hope that helps. - Rev Mike
  22. When did that happen?!? I want to suggest a restaurant search link! Not sure. I only noticed it his week. - Rev Mike
  23. A - Gross! B - Doubt that will stay waterproof for long. Just go to the dollar store and get some tupperware. - Rev Mike
  24. As for the topic of this post it seems that the third time was the charm. I am happy everything is sorted out because I did not want to take away his find... I just wanted the answers out of the log. - Rev Mike
