  1. I have a rather bulky survival knife with most of that stuff. It has the usual pocket knife, fish scaler, bottle and can opener. Attached to it is a whistle, unoculars, button compass flashlight that runes on a light bulb and 2 AAA and a small drawer. In the drawer is fishing hooks, line, weights and a small fork. I also added about 4 matches and a strike pad. All in a 4" x 1" x 1.5" package. Had it for almost 20 years. got it as a birthday present i think. Only thing missing is a simple first aid kit, e-blanket, and a good length of cord. I'll try to remember to post a picture of it when i get home tomorrow.
  2. That kind of depends on what your going for. If your doing mostly rural caches then you need little more then what you already have. If your planning some caches out in the country side where you'll need to do a bit of hiking then there are some other items to consider. One of the primary things i keep on me no matter where i cache is a film canister with a plastic grocery bag in it for any CITO opportunities i may see. While in the woods i keep a folding saw on me. In case i see a nice stick or piece of fallen tree i would like to carve on later. I also have a hiking staff with me. A small first aid kit is also a good thing to have. A pair of leather gloves can be a good thing. Sometimes caches are in hollowed out tries or down gofer holes. You never know what might be down there. So the hiking stick comes in handy there as well. When i was using my car GPS for caching i found it handy to have a compass. In pedestrian mode the map stays fixed with north being up. SO the compass was handy in figuring out the direction i needed to head. Not i have a eTrex Legend H which gives me direction and distance. Since my new GPSr uses AA batteries i keep an extra set with me.
  3. Everything after the .aspx needs to be deleted then the link will work. It seems to only work on Firefox. Chrome doesn't work since Garmin hasn't developed there plugin for that browser yet and it seems to not work on IE.
  4. This will be my first mission. Looking forward to it. Email sent:29 December 2010 Name received:(date) Mission sent:(date) Mission received:(date)
  5. Just got it working for me. Looks like i'll be getting 60 days when my new Legend H comes in today.
  6. FYI, pick one section that best fits your question and post it there. No need to post the same question in multiple sections.
  7. Could have gotten it on Amazon for $109. Just ordered mine on Monday and should be getting it today.
  8. I don't think the site offers twitter integration like that. To my knowledge you would need the ability to set up your GC profile in an RSS feed and thats not an option on the site.
  9. I use an iTouch in concert with my Garmin Nuvi 1300. Only because the Touch doesn't have GPS. But the iPhone can give you turn by turn direction the Nuvi does and get you to GZ as accurately or more so then the Nuvi can. Car GPSr aren't generally as accurate as a good hand held and for good reason. You don't need the accuracy there. Being within 500 ft in a car is good enough.
  10. After playing around with things a bit. Using both IE and Firefox its seems to be an issue of weather or not you let the browser save the log in and password. Having the remember me box alone checked doesn't do it. Before the forum upgrade i seem to remember not having to log in to the forums if i was already logged in on Geocaching.com. Now i have to log into both individually. Guess they separated the forum from the main site for security reasons. just a guess
  11. Why not use the iPhone for both? BTW the large font size isn't needed. just leave the style, font and size at there default settings.
  12. If you have cookies disabled for the site then that may explain why your having to log in so much.
  13. No matter how much space you have on an SD card, your 530 will only hold 500. It's hard coded into the unit. This info comes from the 530 Specs page here: https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?pID=8523 Waypoints/favorites/locations: 500 Its hard to understand what the unit can do from ready the spec sheet. For Built-In Memory it says none. This is misleading since the unit has to have Built-In Memory in order to store the maps, waypoints, routs and track logs. The 500 waypoint limit is hard coded for the onboard memory so there is room in the memory for the device to do the calculations it needs to do and load additional maps. You should be able to load waypoints onto the microSD card without a problem. Usually the limits of these unites is an 8 GB card. That should be more then enough room to hold thousands of waypoints. I don't know the average file size of waypoints but i'd bet its pretty small. Could be wrong. Like i said its hard to tell the full capabilities from that data sheet alone. It could be the card can only be used to hold additional maps. You may have to contact Garmin to find out for sure.
  14. As long as they are AAA batteries then it will work fine.
  15. Interesting idea but isn't that what your Geocaching.com account is for?
  16. Explanations of Acronymes is always a plus! Thanks
  17. I remember reading that one a week or 2 ago. At the time i was having trouble following it cause i hadn't wrapped my mind around the acronyms yet. There are still some caching acronyms i have trouble remembering.
  18. Great, thanks for the replies. I'm really getting into geocoins and considering designing my own. So i'm trying to get as much info as possible. Been looking through the forums and online soaking up all the info i can. This is helping me to better evaluate the value of coins i'm interested in as well.
  19. Noob question. But what kind of production numbers dictate a coin being LE or XLE?
  20. IMO its one thing to have a card made out to say you where there. Its another to use caching as a promotional tool. Lots of time that sort of thing just gets left in the cache or become trash. Not sure where this lies with the rules.
  21. So what do you suggest? Growing up i was taught that if you are going to complain about a problem that you better have a solution to go with it. As a newcomer to the game i don't see anything that's to complicated about this. But being a geek myself maybe things are a bit too complicated and i just don't see it. I look at it like this. Geocaching is a sport. Like any sport you need to take some time to learn the rules and see how the game is played. You don't just hand one of us Americans a Cricket bat and throw us into the game. They need to take the time to learn the sport. I for one have sat down and watched a few cricket matches and still can't make head or tails of the game. When i started Geocaching i went out with my Wife's uncles on a couple of runs. I then spent some time online looking into the game and trying to learn the finer points. I knew this was something i wanted to get into so it was worth my time to learn more about it. Now i don't know about the premium membership side of things yet. As a newcomer i wanted to take some time to get to know the game better and see if the additional features and caches available to premium members was going to be worth the money. Sure it would be nice to upload a group of caches to my GPS all at once. Especially if i'm planning a trip with lots of caches. In that cases scheduling and waiting for the download to become available isn't that big of a deal. As i understand it the lag time is needed so there servers don't get overwhelmed with download requests.
  22. I use a Garmin Nuvi 1300. Garmin has a nice plug in that allows you to download cords direct from the site. Just keep in mind that most Automotive GPS have poor battery life. Not to mention they don't take falls or moister too well. The biggest problem i have with them is the lack of digital compass and distance to cache. You'll get good road directions that will get you close to GZ but once you start walking around its not as straight forward as most of the hand held GPSs. They are usable but not the best. I find it handy to have a compass on hand. Gotta take the nuvi into pedestrian mode so i can get better directions to GZ. But then the map goes stationary where up is north so the compass is needed.
  23. And they are customizable. I like to have a good length of para cord wrapped around my to help make the handle. Pluss the cord can come in handy at times on the trail.
  24. Sweet! Thanks for the link. If i fond one on ebay i like i try to look around to see what the retail is on the coin if its still available. I try to be very Frugal (a.k.a. cheap) when it comes to buying things.
  25. I've looked high and low, near and far, and still can't find a decent one stop spot for Geocoins or other TBs. What i'd like to find is a nice wiki listing all known Geocoins. Offering good pictures of the coins as well as mint dates, finishes available and the retail price on all the coins. As a newcomer to Geocoin collecting i'd like to see whats available. Jumping around from one vender to another and wading through ebay looking for an interesting coin is a pain. Knowing what is out there will go a long to helping me build a list of coins i'd like to get my hands on. I'm sure a majority of coins have been posted here over the years but trying to wade through all the threads to see all the coins is more trouble then its worth. So if there isn't a Wiki already what do you say we get one started? Edit: Just found this one. Looks like a really good start but is missing allot of key info on most of the coins. From what little i know about the selection of Geocoins i can see its also missing some in the listings. http://trackablegeocoins.wetpaint.com/
