Im the same way, i love the GC. I have the 1.6 version and it gets me dead nut to the cache, from 9'-0' constantly, and i have the alarm to go off at 100' just cause im usually on my bike. Plus im in Florida and most are in heavy to overcast tree cover and im still right on them, but a little bumpin makes it fun, makes you look, makes you aware. Just watch out for us clowns in them woods...

I have the 1.6 version and i just power the unit on and go to maps, not geocaches on the menu and jump on my bike, after a minute or so i hear it beep when it locks on to the closest cache to me, its taken about a minute or two when it seems to locate the satelites or me lol...

I just got this for Christmas also, so i hope this helps you. Theres a "owners information" in the tools section to fill out. Even when i power the unit on after i filled it out it tells me while its loading, my name, phone number and the firmware 1.6 that its using.Not sure if this will help, but goodluck...
