  1. Yes but in this discussion pie are squared despite the circles. Actually, pie are triangled and consumed...with whipped topping! If the cache is in bad shape, log a NM on it. If the owner doesn't fix it, log an NA. Crying about how the cache sucks compared to the cache you'd place there instead isn't going to accomplish anything. And, if you don't think the reviewer is acting fast enough, get your grandmother from out of town to post a NA too. Ya I'll get my grandmother on her last legs dieng of cancer to go and need m. That uhhh little ridiculous getting your grandmother involved.. Haha woosh

  5. I see someone from Alaska has posted what they think might be the correct coordinates. They suspect that the CO transposed a couple of digits in the longitude, and that the coordinates should really be S23 41.368 E133 54.632. Based on the CO's description and a look at Google Earth, that location seems to be more likely. Kinda funny, so it looks like the "First 2 Millionth Active Cache" technically doesn't even meet current guidelines... I've seen plenty of listings archived due to breaking this guideline, but of course the reviewer has always been reasonable and tried to get the CO to fix things first. Let's see if the CO ever returns to fix this error.
  6. If you think about it, GC46N4E is already no longer the 2 millionth cache. Any Active cache that was published before GC46N4E and was archived after GC46N4E was published, has bumped GC46N4E's ranking. I'll try to be clearer. Say GCX123X was published on 1/1/2011 and remained active until GC46N4E was published. Then a moment after the 2millionth active cache was published, GCX123X gets archived, that pushes GC46N4E down to the #1,999,999 active cache. Every single time a cache that was published before GC46N4E and gets archived after GC46N4E, it pushes GC46N4E down one more spot. Meaning, there have probably already been 100+ 2millionth Active caches published as of this moment in time. The Active cache number is almost meaningless, other than the fact to tell you that there is a lot of caches out there. I'm much more interested in the total number of caches ever published. For this exercise, it only matters which cache was the first to hold the 2,000,000 spot. Agreed. There's never going to be another first 2,000,000th cache. I'm glad that Overwatch #1 won the luck of the draw. It's not a run-of-the-mill park n grab, but instead a 3.4 difficulty, 3.5 terrain cache that appears to offer a nice view and requires some effort to reach. It's in a somewhat exotic location (from the perspective of where most geocachers live) yet still fairly accessible. While it won't likely achieve the status of Mingo or the only remaining APE cache I hope that it becomes a destination cache that will be on the bucket list for many. As an ambassador for geocaching it would be hard to find a much better choice. If I ever get the opportunity to visit Australia I would very likely be looking at travel options to Alice Springs in order to find Overwatch #1. I think I read somewhere on the forums that there have been ~3.5 million caches published. I would much rather add the actual 1 Millionth, 2 Millionth , and 3 Millionth caches to my To-Do List (if they still exist), instead of the "First 2 Millionth Active Cache".

  9. IMHO those are not pretty and I would not want them. But the concept is very similar to this http://badgegen.com/ which runs through GSAK. I have them on my profile. Project-GC has recently started implementing BadgeGen into it's tools also. http://project-gc.co...le/ProfileStats Not too many people know about project-GC yet, but I think it will go on to be very popular. I did not know about them having stats for your profile yet, thanks! It needs some work though. Look at my profile. The very last thing "these didn't make the list" got cut off. And if you try any of the tabs at the top of the statistics HTML output, they don't work, they take you to his website. And none of the links for caches work either, they again take you to his website. That's due to limitations on Groundspeak's side of things(I think). If you don't want an automatically updating image of your stats then you need to download the static html file provided and all links/tabs should work fine without being redirected.

  11. Plain old Bushwalker did find and log one cache. It was created in 2005, and last logged into in 2010. Disappointing if you want it, but I totally agree it should be gone forever. As threatened the other day, proof that Groundspeak will never delete accounts, even that of a spambot. This has come up before, so when I saw some spam in the forums a couple months ago, I bookmarked a spambot's profile. Username akmkbjok was created for, and only used for the purposes of spamming the forums http://www.geocachin...ile/?id=6803354 although "locked", it obviously has not been deleted. So who wants to write to the contact address and ask if they can change their name to, or create the account akmkbjok? I'm in enough hot water around here these days. Groundspeak doesn't even lock all spambot accounts. I reported jimmyhelu a while back and all they did was delete the forum posts. He still has a spam link in his profile. I'd like to see someone try to get their name changed to jimmyhelu. The account isn't locked(yet) and has a verified email.
  12. No they absolutely do not. That has come up before, and I bookmarked the profile of one at work. During lunch hour, of course, I don't surf the web during working hours. Spam bots are amongst the 7 million Geocachers. You know, I might sound a little radical here, and like I'm bashing the Frog. But C'mon now, if you tried to get a username, and was told it was "used" because someone with 0 finds and 0 hides logged in with it for one day in 2007, couldn't you see it from my perspective? For those who couldn't care less, I agree with some of the previous posts that you have to get creative with special characters on the keyboard, or put on "s" on the end like Redant did, etc... I wonder how many million cachers are actually just spam bots? I've always assumed the reason Groundspeak doesn't delete spam accounts is just so they can pad their numbers for marketing purposes.
  13. Some can be pretty mundane, but there are many that could be a very good waymark. Where you thinking of adding some restrictions? Here are some along the coast of New England:

  15. I win. I took this screenshot at 2:09pm eastern. Photoshop or any other image editors were not involved. The image has not been manipulated.
  16. You obviously didn't try it. The problem is that the heading are also links. So press-and-hold also brings up the extended option menu for processing links. The only way to prevent this is, as I said, press-and-hold the down arrow, which also activates the drop-down, but is not part of the link. It's an attempt to provide a default action for browsers that can't handle the mouse-over. I use Chrome for Android and what I do is long-press the heading. Once the "Open in new tab, etc" screen pops up, I press the back button. This then allows me to click on one of the links in the drop-down menu. It's annoying, but it's the only workaround I've found.
  17. Why would they try to alienate what's probably their largest demographic, i.e. Garmin users? Garmin's alienated a ton of people on their own with their Opencaching antics, so Groundspeak doesn't have to do a thing in that department. The fatal flaws of this new system are: 1. It is meant to replace a very solid and favorite file system used by many programs and devices seamlessly with unknown tech, and 2. It's nothing more than a publicity stunt. Honestly, is there really a need to load ALL the geocaches out there on one machine, especially given that even 5000 is more than virtually anyone needs at one time? They are trying to introduce a file standard that just isn't needed. . Actually, yes there is a need. Why do you think so many people like geocaching with their smartphones(and don't feel the need to purchase a dedicated GPSr)? Because they can go caching on-the-fly without the need to pre-plan cache trips ahead of time. They can just whip out their phone and have access to an unlimited amount of caches. No need to create PQs limited to 1000. No need to go through the trouble of figuring out how to best optimize those PQs, etc. Now with this new file type, Garmin can effectively do the same with a gpsr AND you aren't limited to having a data connection to do it. These new Oregons can hold ~4 million caches with new file type and there are currently ~2 million caches on gc.com (hence how they are able to get away with using the "unlimited" term). If you still want to filter out certain caches, the Oregon has that built-in so you can do that on-the-fly too. In an ideal world, i'd own one of these new Oregons and gc.com would make PQs less restrictive with the new file-type. I'd then be able to use my Oregon like I use my smartphone and only have to update my Oregon every so often(once a month maybe).
  18. It's not that far off. Google Glasses will probably be released to the public in the next two years or so. All that would need to be done is take Google Glasses http://en.wikipedia....i/Project_Glass https://plus.google....jectglass/posts and combine them with an app like GeoGoggles https://play.google.....peko.geogoggle
  19. I agree that the names and info would confuse and be too jumbled up, thats why I mentioned only the names of the caches and nothing else. Im also not sure what your other points have to do with my proposition. I do have Gsak and finding caches is not the problem. I do PQ all the time and am really familiar with GSAK. the reasoning for the screen shot is to be-able to see them on google maps without a connection to the internet. taking a screen shot with just the cache names would be really beneficial! You could download an app that supports Offline Maps.
  20. Not true. I'm a member of two such forums that support tapatalk and when I did a search for geocaching related forums in tapatalk I counted two dozen such forums which were "American".

  22. Is it necessary to revise again? As we saw, sites go down or they don't get updated or the domain expires. As long as the required info is provided, does it matter if it is linked to nationalregisterofhistoricplaces.com, findthedata, landmarkhunter, or whatever site? Probably a good thing to not limit linking to one specific site, but have a few back-ups. JMO One thing I noticed that still isn't 'fixed' with the nationalregisterofhistoricplaces site. You still get an error page when accessing counties with an apostrophe ( ' ) in the name. I remember trying to use the Contact Us link to inform them of this snafu, and I got "This section is currently under development; scheduled to be complete by May 15th." I see it remains 'under development'. I just haven't figured out May 15th of what year...??? I agree. I think it's unwise to require linking to a commercial 3rd party site that has proven to be unreliable.
  23. This waymark http://www.Waymarking.com/waymarks/WM8CM8_Pispala_Shot_Tower has managed to gain 41 visits in the past two years, yet it's located in the middle of the North Atlantic...
  24. Not necessarily. I have a Samsung Galaxy Nexus (Android) and I use an app called Widgetsoid https://play.google....ils?id=com.jim2 It lets me add "toggles" to my notification bar. I've added a toggle that lets me turn on & off the flashlight. I can do this by just pulling down the notification bar and clicking the button on or off, no need to leave the app. Here is a screenshot I just took. The little lightning bolt is the flashlight button. You can also just barely see the Geocaching app compass running on the screen. The app gives you a ton of different option to customize it. Add/remove toggles, change colors, etc.
