  1. I'm trying to convert .tpo files (such as those found on mapxchange ) to .gpx? I tried gpsbabel and it errors out saying

TPO: this file format only supports tracks, not waypoints or routes.

this article speaks about it being possible, but with the assistance of another program (ozi explorer).

Use this command with gpsbabel 1.3.x:

    gpsbabel.exe -p "" -t -i tpo3 -f "file.tpo" -o gpx -F "file.gpx"

You can change option tpo3 for tpo2.

  2. This is great. I just did the San Francisco 15m quad. Topo works fine, but I have an issue with my waterways: I get two lines for creeks/rivers one of which is fine, the other follows the general path but is very jagged (ie: a low res version of the former).

For the waterways are you downloading the high resolution data. I think the waterways look pretty good.

Ok I found the issue. When I'm using mapsettoolkit (1.17a beta) to install the IMG file, whatever I use as the "Mapset Name" is created as a low res IMG file (this is used when you're zoomed out). So for example if I start with 10010110.img and run mapsettoolkit using the MapsetName "Test", when MSTK is done, C:\Garmin\Custom contains 4 files: 10010110.img, Test.img, Test.TDB, and Test.reg. When I choose to display "Test" in mapsource, it displays both Test.img (low res) and 10010110.img (high res original).

What am I doing wrong here? How do I inhibit mapsource from displaying the global img when I'm zoomed in? Is this is MSTK bug? [i haven't d/l to the gps so I'm not sure what it looks like there yet.]

    Hi!

Can you send me your 10010110.img please. I'm not sure that MSTK can create this bugs. Your Level bits in your img file it's not correct or to low bits level (15-14)??

I will let Bansheegeo send his. I am not going to bombard Cypherman, at least not yet. :( . The problem may be with the original .img, file, but the output of Mapset Toolkit includes a [Mapset name].img file. If you open that with Map edit, you get a very rough low res image of the area.

I hate to reply to my own message but I am going to. I found a workaround. Open the [Mapset name].img, then delete all the internal objects, just not the background or the definition area. Then re-export it through cGPSmapper. Just to be clear, you are not opening the ########.img that you created earlier, but rather the [Mapset name].img that Mapset Toolkit creates for you. Then when you view it on mapsourse, the low res objects are gone!

    It worked for me, YMMV!

[Mapset name].img is a global maps (overview maps), it's normal that a low res maps. MapSetToolKit can create a empty low res maps. Checked the Blank overview maps box. It's make a same workaround.

  4. Cypherman has revised his MapSetToolKit to v1.15 making it even easier to use now. The entire Step-by-Step Instructions for making Custom Topo Maps, Rev. 3, has never been easier. Most anyone should now be able to make Custom Topo Maps.

Cypherman has a new revision for MapSetToolKit v1.17a on his web site. This new version has a new option of "Blank overview maps". What does this option do?

This option, make a empty global IMG file (overview maps). Use this option only to make some test. The generation of a mapset is faster with this option.

Yes, gpsdaemon can read this file outside the GPSr.

Select File in Map source group (see the image) and to put your file gmapsupp.img in the home temp directory.

    gpsdaemon_1.JPG

Ye, I definitely selected File as you have shown. Then at the bottom it asked where the gmapsupp.img file was located. I created a path to the file.

I believe I next clicked Create, that's when it locked up. I had to use Task Mgr to close GPSDaemon.

Do you think moving gmapsupp.img to another directory would make a difference?

    Thanks

    Hermit

If you changed for another directory, there's no difference. I does not understand why.

I ever had problem with gpsdaemon since I use it. At least it working with your GPSr. That gives the same result.

I know that there is also the program gpsexplorer which makes the same thing I believe. I ever used it, You can test it

  6. eaparks,

Perhaps you have a clue what is/not happening.

If I DL this Map and change it from DenW.img to gmapsupp.img I can see the map inside my Venture. However, if I take my exported map from GPSMapEdit and do the same thing, all I see is a header and no map.

    What I'm I missing?

BTW, My water data is now DL @ 7KB/s, its huge 26MB whereas my elevation data was only 3MB. Feel I've done something wrong.

    Thanks

    Hermit

Weird, in GPSmapedit, zoom in your maps and your see nothing???

Send me this maps if you want, I will check that.

You can extract the maps to the file gmapsupp.img with GPSdaemon. Once the extracted maps, you can modify them with GpsMapEdit and then reconstitute the file gmapsupp.img with sendmap20/img2gps. A thing which is needed that you know, you will lose the data of routings of the maps that you modified. One in the ways of making would be can be not to modify your maps, but rather to add your new map 24K in the files gmapsupp.img.
Thanks for the reply, I think I understand the process, just need to try it to be sure. I Googled GPSdaemon, got about a dozen hits, didn't seem to get a link to an executable. Do you have a link?

    Thanks

Thank you. I will PM you as well. Because I kept seeing suggestions to try "Mapset Toolkit," I did. Once I figured out what data to enter where, I was able to run it and it did create the .img, .reg, and .tdb files. It also added the entry to the registry. I did not get the error from mapsource but when I opened up the map in mapsource all I got was an empty box with 3 dots and text stating that the "Map created with http://www.cgpsmapper.com."

I will send the PM a little later I think I need a break and am going to go to work for a few hours today.

    Thanks for your help.

  11. I created a custom topo map with hydrography data that uploads to the GPSr (60CSx) correctly using Mapsource. My problem is that the lakes are not visible in Mapsource but show up properly on the GPSr. All other water features (streams and rivers) show up correctly in both Mapsource and the GPSr. In Mapsource I've tried all the zoom levels and have changed the "detail" settting to "highest" and this still does not make the lakes appear.

    I'd appreciate any suggestions, Thanks.

    Hi eaparks!

Do you use a TYP file with your custom topo map? Because a priority in draworder can make this problem.

also, just email me your files (cypherman1 at gmail dot com)

    Hello Cypherman,

I have downloaded your latest version, but I can't get it to open my folder that stores the .img maps.

When I browse to the correct folder and click OK, nothing shows up in the Source IMG Files box. I can't add anything to the Selected IMG Files box.

I watched the tutorial and it seems straightforward but its not working. Any sugeestions?

    Hi Flap!

yes, your filename is not 8 caracters numeric (filename 8.3 DOS format) . EX: 12345678.img

Mapsource support only numerical filename 8.3 GPSr are not restriction for a filename, if using sendmap20.

The filename qwertyui.img , 1234.img and a1b2c3d4.img is not accepted with Mapsource,

    Regards

    Cypherman

    Hello, Cypherman,

I renamed the files with the 8 didgit number used for Mapedit. I then loaded a small map and it works fine in Mapsource and loads to the GPSr, but when I convert a larger map, it crashes Mapsouce. As soon as I select the map in Mapsource the program closes.

It maybe that I am unclear on your instructions about Levels/Zoom

I have set up the map with the following:

    Level 0-24 Zoom 0

    Level 1-22 Zoom 1

    Level 2-20 Zoom 2

    Level 3-19 Zoom 3

    Level 4-18 Zoom 4

    Level 5-17 Zoom 5

Running Mapset, would I put in the Level/Zoom entry the following?

    17:18/6:7

This map is currently running on my Garmin Map60CXs and works fine by loading with IMG2GPS. I am not sure what is going on but I have to use your Uninstall Mapset function to make Mapsource work.

What do you think the problem could be?

    Thanks for you time,

    Sincerely

    Flap

Enter this level/zoom: 18:17/4:5. The first Level/zoom is the last define level/zoom in your img file. The last level/zoom is the next level/zoom that not use by your img file. This level/zoom is used for the overview map (global map).

I make a test with my exemple (invert hexa and convert to dec - 28163) it's work great with 036e (28163).

Can you send my your TDB dans img for ontariotyp please?? I can check that. I don't understand why don't work with you.

    Cypherman

    To get back on track...

I originally started with hex 036e which is 878 decimal

I put 878 in FID entry in typ text file and 036e in Family ID box in Mapset Toolkit

I compiled and installed in Mapsource...modified maps showed in Mapsource but not on GPSr

It was at this point I asked for help to figure out problem

You suggested to invert 036e to 6e03 and use the corresponding decimal equivalant 28163

I then put 28163 in FID entry in typ text file and 6e03 in Family ID box in Mapset Toolkit

I compiled and installed in Mapsource...modified maps showed in Mapsource but not on GPSr

I then put 878 in FID entry in typ text file and 6e03 in Family ID box in Mapset Toolkit

Now it displayed modified map in Mapsource and GPSr...good

Next I tried 28163 in FID entry in typ text file and 036e in Family ID box in Mapset Toolkit

It displayed modified map in Mapsource and GPSr...good

So what worked for me was the combination of 878 FID typ text file and 6e03 Family ID Mapset Toolkit OR 28163 FID in typ text file and 036e in Family ID Mapset Toolkit

878 and 036e what I originally used or 28163 and 6e03 what you suggested didn't work for me

is this consistant what works for you?

Yes you enter a good FID in MapSetToolKit. But after install this mapset, check (ID:) in uninstall listbox this number is inverse. it's not same that FID your enter in FID field. B) When I spoke to reverse it, I did not speak about that enter FID field, but about that in the uninstall listbox.. B) It's a error of MapSetToolKit.

    bye

    Cypherman

What version do you have od MapSetToolKit?

If I never inverse the ID (hexa) in the uninstall listbox, It's never work in the GPSr

    Hi rws!

    In your registry: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Garmin\MapSource\Families\ontariotyp]

    "ID"=hex:03,6e

Your hexa number is 036e. Reverse this number gives 6e03. (Resulat after invert is 6e03)

Your take 6e03 and convert in decimal: (Resulat is 28163)

Your take this cumber (28163) and fill FID in your txt typ-file.

Thats's it. You compile this file.

You can send multi maps product and multi TYP files to GPSr, it's work great with my tests

I then tried the inverted 6e03 in Mapset Toolkit and 878 in the text typ file...compiled and installed...it now displays the TYP modified map in Mapsource and when uploaded to GPSr. Just wondering why the 878 FID number worked and not 28163 you suggested?
