  1. Anyone out there actually using the 2730 that may be able to help with this question? TomB
  2. Garmin 2730. Does anyone know if you can be listening to XM radio or MP3 songs in the back ground while the GPS is working in the foreground? This is probably a dumb question but I would hate to make the purchase and find out they don't work together. And I assume the GPS voice will overide the music when it is playing. Is this true? Thanks in advance for your comments. TomB
  3. If the spec is down to 1 meter for 30 minutes than that is what I would demand. I would stick it in a waterproof bag after the warranty period ran out but I would expect it to perform as stated for at least the duration of the warranty. It may just be a flawed unit in which case if you didn't use it the way it was advertised you wouldn't find out until it was too late. TomB
  4. Hi 03, I believe I am using the current drivers. They are the ones that came with the Q2 of which I have only had 1 week. I have no software installed for Mapsource since this is my first Garmin product. I was hesitant to make an additional purchase on their software because I wasn't sure if it would work. I mean hell I bought the Q2 with V7 installed and you would think they would give you some way of working with trips and waypoints other than the 1.5x2.2" screen. Although I have done it using S&T or a paper map just for the bigger picture to make it easier and to see a larger area when laying out a trip. I did try nRoute in hopes it would recognize the map in the Q2 and it did for a few seconds then the Q2 powered down. Thanks for your input. TomB
  5. Has anyone had any luck linking the Quest 2 to a Trip and Waypoint Manager Program. Planning routes on the Q2 display is slow and awkward. And I have no way to save tracks and routes anywhere but on the Q2. It would be nice to be able to store them on my laptop. Or has anyone had any luck linking to a version of Mapsource and uploading/downloading routes and track files? I have tried Ver 6 with no luck but have not tried ver 7. When I hook up my laptop to the GPS the GPS shuts down during the connection process. It has happened when I tried to hook up to a laptop running a current version 6 Mapsource and it shutdown when I tried to hook up to another program "EasyGPS". It starts and runs for a few seconds and then powers down. Anyone worked through this or have any ideas or thoughts? TomB
  6. So after all that,,,! Anyone want to buy a decent GPS and all the necessary accessories at a good price? TomB
  7. So I guess if I could of ordered everything from one source I wouldn't have had to pay shipping from different locations. I also suppose if I ordered brand X I could have also saved more money. Your a great source of info,,, Ever think of starting your own Web Site,,, you could call it "useless outdated information.com" let's see: definition of vagabond vag·a·bond [vággə bònd] n (plural vag·a·bonds) 1. homeless wanderer: somebody who has no permanent place to live and wanders from place to place 2. beggar: somebody who survives by asking for food or money adj of vagabonds: relating to or characteristic of a vagabond vi (past vag·a·bond·ed, past participle vag·a·bond·ed, present participle vag·a·bond·ing, 3rd person present singular vag·a·bonds) be a vagabond: to wander from place to place [15th century. 8. You guys and gals are all drinking the wrong beer. I drink Guiness and I am a lot of fun at parties. Just ask me I'll tell ya. You all are like a bad audience, always looking for the flaws. Even if there is something worthwhile out there you must find something wrong. Thank you all. TomB
  9. And if you wait another three months you might get it for $400. Although I doubt it very much you could get all these items for $500. Tom
  10. I bought it to use while riding my motorcycle and the only few spots I can mount it are too close for my old eyes to see it without wearing my reading glasses. Since I don't wear them when riding it doesn't really work for me. TomB Huh, I guess I thought you were selling it because, as you said here, "You would be better off going to Staples and buying some scotch tape, a marker and a map." Or maybe because you also said, "you better look elsewhere, or waste your money." It seems to me that when you post things about your Explorist 500 such as, "If you want a GPS device look elsewhere" then there's more to this than a problem seeing the screen. Hi Geekgirl, The world could surely use a few more people like you. You must be a lot of fun at home or parties pointing out peoples flaws. Tell me, do you take notes? The GPS doesn't work for me but it is still a full featured device and what I am offering is well worth the money. There are many folks who use their toys different from me and will get a lot of fun out of this one. You are truly inspiring. TomB
  11. A couple people have emailed me and asked for a price. I would like to get $525 for the package. That is a tremendous savings for someone thinking of purchasing a full featured GPS device, not to mention you would start with all the accessories, and almost for free. TomB

  13. Hi Katy, Invisible Shield There are others but this one is pretty thick and of a good quality. Went on pretty easy too. Tom
  14. Hi folks, I am selling a two month old Magellan Explorist 600. It is in excellent condition. I am selling it with all the accessories I purchased so it is a complete system. I shopped hard and got the best prices I could find and spent just over $700 for everything listed here. I did not keep the boxes but I will pack it carefully prior to shipping. Protective shield on display from day 1. Auto suction cup holder. Bike mount. 12 volt car power adapter. Canvas Carry case. I will pay shipping in the US. The unit is in perfect condition, no scratches or problems. If you are interested drop me an email at: ctballos@optonline.net If you have any questions ask them here. Tom
  15. Tech Support????? How about wait an hour, once an hour and a half, to speak to someone who has nothing to say. I had problems with the Explorist 600 not being able to give me street to street routing on a simple course which I laid out on some roads I wanted to explore. Well I know now that the device and software is so limited it is not capable of performing this task. It is fine telling me how to get to one place at a time as long as I don't mind taking their route. Recalculating a route is comical. I was on a trip the other day and went off course. So after five miles or so I hit goto and recalc and it wanted to turn me around and drive back along the same path I just came when there were clearly other roads it could have lead me on to get to my destination. It took 10 miles down the road before it released the old route and recalced a new one. Even then it kept sending me out to a road that was clearly miles out of my destination and if I took it I would have traveled 20 miles needlessly. If you want a GPS device look elsewhere. ctballos
  16. You people freak me out. Magellan advertises features on a device, such as direct routing, a pressure barometer, a barometer, none of which even come close to working and you say things like "nice compass". I paid for these features and I expect them to work. Tech support is made up of monkees, I have called and emailed them on several occassions and their response has always been "huh, I don't know" their software was written by monkees, the GPS take several minutes to track just a few a satellites, it will only give you direct routing with a start and end point beyond that you get a bunch of straight lines drawn off and on the map, if you introduce waypoints forget it as it only gives you a path to the end point and you can forget anything in the middle,,,,,. If I sound upset it is because I just dropped over $700 on the Explorist 600, Mapsend Direct Route 2.0F, a bike mount, a car mount, a car charger and an SD card. If you want a GPS device that works like you want, heck like you need or a GPS device that offers you the features everyone else offers you better look elsewhere, or waste your money. You would be better off going to Staples and buying some scotch tape, a marker and a map. Tom Ballos Hyde Park, NY
  17. Guys, I don't have a com port on my laptop but the software and driver was installed anyway. I was able to upload and download to the GPS fine and then I wasn't. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the software, the USB drivers and everything else. I still couldn't get it to see the device even though it was opening the file window when I connected to it. I finally selected NMEA and shut off the drivers, by selecting off on the menu selection, and it was okay after that. Just a tidbit that worked for me, Tom
  18. Well I built a route using the method I described above and as embra stated the GPS went from the first point to the last by the quickest route, dropping all my waypoints in the process. If I tell it I want a point to point and I am flying an airplane it works fine. So I am back to square one. It doesn't look like I will be able to easily plan the route I want to ride and have the GPS tell me how to follow that route. Does anyone have a solution? Maybe some third party software. Anyone know if other GPS devices let you choose your own route? Tom
  19. Picking "Build Route" under the "Waypoint" menu in Direct Route allows me to place individual WP's and select the streets I want. I can use the arrow keys to move the map and the - and + keys to zoom in and out. Each route seems limited to 30 WP's. Once the WP route is complete I save it to the hard drive. Then I run MAgellan Conversion Manager. The GPS needs to be hook up. I select "Convert Waypoints / Routes / Tracks". Then it presents me with folder dialog window where I find the file I want to convert and upload and send it to either the GPS built in memory or the SD memory card. I haven't been able to figure out if it is changing my route to its own road preference yet because I did a route too far away to drive. I am going to do a route around my house and see if it changes anything in the GPS. Tom
  20. Hi Jamie, What I am doing is laying out waypoints in Direct Route, picking the roads and route I want to ride and then saving the waypoint file. I then run the conversion program and send it to the GPS as a route. I go into the GPS and load the route and I see the route but the GPS isn't telling me where to go or how far away the first point is. I am thinking I am not doing something but I don't know what it is. Tom
  21. Hi folks, I am new to the GPS. And I am having trouble setting it up for my use. I want to use it to guide me on new roads during motorcycle trips. I am using the Explorist 600 and Direct Route 2.0F. I want to lay out a route over new roads and have the GPS tell me where to turn and how far the next turn is. I can do street route but it only lets me define a start and finish. How can I select multiple roads where I want to ride on and have the GPS tell me how far to the next turn and which way to go when I get there? Any help would be appreciated. Tom
