  1. quote:Yeppers! It's not real gingerale unless it's Vernors®! Shall I add a travel bug to a bottle, and send it out to find you? (Hmmm...I wonder what it would taste like after freezing, thawing, and hitting 110° a couple of times.) It would taste like HEAVEN! Didn't you ever drink it warm when you had the flu? And don't even get me started about Vernors floats! The only problem is that you have to warn Vernors neophytes about the bubbles. I don't know how many times I've had to tell people, "Don't breath in while you're sipping it." Only to watch them choke and cough and sputter. Makin' me thirsty.

  3. Caching in the rain isn't so bad, but it does make you wish that more people would buy those waterproof logbooks. Er . . of course, I have yet to buy one myself. Bret

  5. Anyone here from an area where Vernors Gingerale is available? Mmmmmmmm, Vernors. I can find it in stores around here if I look long enough. It's almost as exciting as coming across a cache when I finally can score a six pack. Bret
  6. quote:I like the idea. How expensive are those digital 3 minute recorders? Actually, I'm talking about those micro-cassette recorders (like people used to use for taking notes before digital . . . remember Twin Peaks?). The last time I checked, I think you could get them for about 10 bucks at Wal-mart. Also, somehow we collected about 3 of them over the years, so maybe I can dig one up here to use. Bret
  7. I'm looking to pick up a few of those . . maybe even include them in a cache or two . . . But not until those green hats that are on backorder come in! Is it late May yet, Jeremy? Bret

  10. I'm getting ready to hide my first cache in the next week or so. I've considered including a disposable camera, as I've seen in a few caches, but last night I was wondering about another way for people to leave memories of their visits. What if I put a micro-cassette recorder in the cache and asked people to leave messages for other cachers (this might be especially cool considering some of the local good-natured rivalry). I might even find a way to convert them into wavs and make them available on a website. What do you think? Has anyone else done this? Thanks! Bret
  11. quote: Sometimes I like to create caches with nothing but food in them. I made a cache a few weeks ago and it had Birthday Cake, some scrambled eggs, teo cheeseburgers and a buter-rum pie in it. I didn't want to bruise the cake, so for a cache container, I just used plain old wax paper. I left a squeezee full of icing for people to use to write their logs on the top of the cake. You didn't leave the cake out in the rain, did you?!?!?
  12. My daughter is begging for one of those youth Geocaching T-shirts (what's the deal with longs sleeved tshirts anyway?). Being a rather easily confused father, I'm trying to figure out if I should get her a S, M, L, or XL. She's soon to be 10 years old and currently wears size 14 or 16 clothes. Does anyone with more fashion sense than me have any ideas what would be about right? Of course, I could always take the easy way out and get her the XL and tell her it's to sleep in . . .hey it works on her MOM! Bret
  13. Wow . . their site is down right now . . coinkidink or not? I ordered my eTrex Venture from AdvancedGPS back in February. There were some warning back then about them, but not enough to keep me from checking out their prices. I did decide to ship FedEx so I could track it to my house. No horror story here, but as always, "Caveat Emptor." Bret
  14. AAAACK! MATH!! Count me out! Come up with a good cache hunt involving Gilligan's Island reruns and I'm there, dude! Bret

  16. I'm a little South of Bloomington--Coles County (Charleston/Mattoon area). Caches in the immediate area seem a little slim, but I manage to get on the road pretty regular and have had a lot of fun seeing places in this area I've never been to before. I'll be sure to look for your names in the logbooks if I don't see you on the trails! Bret

  18. Any day now those little mushrooms ought to be popping their heads out of the ground. Hopefully a few of them will be finding their way into my frying pan, too! I've been wondering how many caches are going to be stumbled upon by mushroom hunters in the next few week. But beyond that, I'm interested in hearing about how many MUSHROOMS are stumbled upon by cachers. So, please keep me posted .. let us know how many you find! Bret
  19. Along the same lines, mushroom hunting season will be beginning here in Illinois any day now (morel mushrooms . . no really, they're legal! Tasty too!). I've been wondering what the impact of hundreds of mushroom hunters walking through the woods, turning over every leaf they find will have on the geocaches we've got out there. My bet is a few will be found by accident. Might be a good idea to make sure you check any that you've got hidden in popular areas. Anyone have any idea if this has been a problem in the last couple of years? Bret
  20. After much thought and consideration about what I wanted for a signature item, I realized that I had accidentally stumbled upon one. The ministry I serve with provides materials for "Lighthouses of Prayer." One of the items we have is a lighthouse lapel pin. I bought a handful of them and have been placing them in almost all my caches. Hope you find one sometime! Bret

  22. Maybe I'm feeling a big morbid today, but I got to thinking while I was taking a walk today: If you were to design a cache hunt around your final resting place (with instructions in your will to be carried out by responsible cache-buddies), what would it be like? Would it be just a visit to your grave, would the cache box be built into the stone, what would you want people to take/leave? Hmmmmmmm . . what are the possibilities? Bret

  24. Palm has finally released connector ends for the m500 series so that data cables can be made to run between the eTrex and Palm (I even have a source for them). Question though, what exactly will such a cord do for me? Would it just be able to download waypoints, or would it be possible to get map software for the Palm and use the eTrex basically as an antenna and the Palm as a GPS (I'd only be doing this in the car if it's possible)? And if it is possible, what software would be best to get for the Palm? Thanks for any input! Bret
