  1. Great thread. Seeing "cheese in a maze" was enough for me to think Keystone bailed at the right time.
  2. How many days should I wait? The cache the TB was last seen in was last logged on 11/11/2014. I figured if they haven't retrieved it in 5 days, they aren't going to drop it anytime soon. Bug = TB4XKWP Zepp, I hope my comment didn't come across as judgemental. I just remember seeing you started this year and wanted to offer some thought. I wait a week, send an e-mail and grab a few days later if no response...there is no logic there, just what I do. If I dropped a tb and didn't log for longer than a week, I would be glad that someone grabbed it from me to update the status.
  3. You may want to give the guy you grabbed it from time to log it...not sure if you thought of that.
  4. Just something I picked-up back in my youth that doesn't necessarily pertain to this particular situation...when you refer to an area as "sketchy" in a crowd of people with whom you are unfamiliar, you could very well be referring to someone's neighborhood. I see absolutely no reason to feel compelled to warn other cachers about sketchiness of the area. We have driven to GZ many times and were able to determine our own comfort level with continuing the search.
  5. I think some newer cachers forget that they can revisit a cache that they have already logged. We have a couple of nearby smalls that are our go-to caches to drop-off trackables if our schedules do not allow real caching. I picked up a coin a couple of weeks back that I was planning on taking on a business trip to Mexico. That trip got cancelled and your post reminded me to drop it off at the nearby cache today.
  6. Huh, I wouldn't have thought that challenge would fly w/ guidelines.
  7. When you place the first one, you make a way point. When you get 528' away, you're good to go for the next.
  8. It really doesn't matter how you hid it, but rather how you find it. Start at a spot you know it was near and methodically check each tree while expanding your search circle. You can even use some flagging tape to mark the trees you already checked. This will ensure your search is not biased by possible inaccuracies in your memory. Good luck.
  9. You just show me where you want it and I'll put it where I can I can put it in the bedroom, I can put it in the hall I can put it in the bathroom, I can hang it on the wall You can have it with a buzz, you can have it with a ring And if you really want it you can have a ding-a-ling
  10. Our first skirtlifter was also our first DNF.
  11. I think "complete its requirements" needs to come first, but that's just me.
  12. Dude, you have to find it. It will haunt you. I just thought what it would be like if one of our multis was completely changed after adoption. We've spent so much time maintaining, I know the area very well. I would love to see if the new owner made better use of the park than we did. And, we would log it. Sounds like a blast!
  13. I'm weighing in a bit late, but for what it's worth.., We have 2 multis and use the packing tape method. It works fine, but leave overlap on the edges (adhesive to adhesive). If you want a more permanent feel which eliminate bisons etc., they make small copper gardening tags that are soft enough to write (impression) anything you want.
  14. WOW, this thread has been busy since this morning. There is just too much here to read, but did skim. I think what is getting lost is that some like me see challenge caches as an entry point to an adventure. It really is that simple. Whatever means there exists out there to bring an adventure to my awareness is cool. Our Jasmer adventure started with hearing about it in this forum. The adventure I mentioned this morning involving finding the "original" Jasmer Challenge cache just popped into my head. I discovered a cache down in Brazil by being inquisitive about that monkey icon. I can't believe I got within 9 miles of that thing and couldn't find the unpaved road. Maybe I'll make it back there someday. I just do not see a reason to change something that isn't broke. I've learned a lot by coming here to the forums, but beyond that, I use the resources here to surf for caches of interest. I don't search bookmarks, profiles etc. so I wouldn't know much if cachers hid their experiences there. I don't know if I would have discovered the Jasmer if it was not a cache. We don't talk much about each other's bookmarks and the system here is built around caches. I don't know, this whole thread just seems odd to me. Maybe it's the first time I have read such vigor behind a discussion to eliminate something here I value.
  15. TSR, You are making this way to difficult. Either ignore challenge caches for which you do not qualify or log them (probably 70% of your logs will stick). It's as simple as that. Completing the Jasmer was one of our most memorable caching experiences which took us to some pretty cool places which we wouldn't have visited without the challenge nudge that tied them all together. We found a local knock-off to commemorate the achievement, but still have our sights on the original on the west coast. I'm sure that will make another adventure which would not be available if it was not listed as a cache.
  16. Getting back to why the sticks were removed, some well intentioned cacher probably remembered reading "Items that may melt in the heat, such as crayons or lip balm, or expand in the cold, such as liquids, should also be excluded from caches."
  17. We've had really good success w/ fake ivy gorilla taped to an ammo box. I couldn't find a glue that would hold-up.
  18. Challenge caches have changed the meaning of the find count. It has become a reward, I wouldn't mind so much if challenge caches were somehow recognized separately, so that they didn't turn the find count into a competitive reward. I want my find count to reflect the caches I have visited. I want an accurate Found It list so I can easily use the map and filtering to see which caches I haven't found yet. I want my list of Notes to reflect instances where I was passing information to the community or owner that was not covered by the DNF, NM or NA options. I do not want my Notes list mixed in with actual cache finds. Help me out here, as we have only completed a few challenges, but we found a physical cache for each. I'm sure that I am uninformed of some practice out there.
  19. I've been amazed at the traction this thread has received. This morning, I was already to post my thoughts on unnecessary rules, but I remembered I had a cache to fix. I just enabled it and was about to post my thoughts when I see fizzymagic beat me to it almost verbatim.
  20. Oh what a great simple idea...just put a water tight container inside another locked container. The outer container doesn't have to be watertight so a lock can pass through both the box and the lid.
  21. Hey, Eric Stratton, 36,000 finds, dadgum glad to meet you. Edit...Seriously? That was funny w/o the needless censor.
  22. If you put some PVC pipe, end caps, u-bolts and epoxy on a table in front of you, I bet you find a solution.
  23. Serious question...We never post attends logs for events, rather notes (Sorry Chief...if you ever get close we may reconsider, but doubt it). Now, we've never attended an event that had more than about 30 people, but this thread got me thinking. Since size matters, we could go to a big event with 499 or 4999 others and spoil the whole status thing by posting a note. Or' we could skip the event and there would still only be 499 or 4999 attended logs. I don't think there is a difference other than the former may make us a target by icon hounds. This is such a complex game we've created. OK, it started serious, but I couldn't keep a straight face.
