Cable for Magellan Meridian to PC
The Commissar! replied to pamap's topic in GPS technology and devices
I can get mine to run at 19,600, but was hoping to hit the 115,000?! Oh well might as well save the $... -

I agree - I have three friends who got this unit and they love it. We frequently Geocache together and they seem to do as well as mine under the trees! It is a good compromise (from my choice of the MeriPlat) of features vs price. They picked it up at Boaters World for ~$170.00. -
Meridian map screen modification

I couldn't stand it any longer, so I tried it with the Topo maps and it works there too! Looks good in my office I will have to report back when I have tried it in the field! -
Cable for Magellan Meridian to PC

quote:Originally posted by embra:I have heard from others (but haven't tried myself) that the PDA converters are the same as the USB-serial adapters, and would serve the need. Often they seem to cost $13-14 while the USB-serial adapters are around $30. I wonder about that. At any rate, I bought one of the $30 thingees for my MeriPlat, and it's working well. Max Often wrong but seldom in doubt Was the $30 thingee faster through the USB compared to the serial? I have a MeriPlat too and have been considering the same purchase... -

what do you think works better Magellan or Garmin
The Commissar! replied to awskoa's topic in GPS technology and devices
Ford or Chevy? Toyota or Nissan? I don't think its a brand thing so much as a specific model and its features/capabitlites... Unless you are talking customer service... That being said I like my Meridian Plat. -

Meridian map screen modification
The Commissar! replied to embra's topic in GPS technology and devices
I saw that and it looks GREAT! Will it work with Topo's? I am a little leary when it comes to fooling around with the software after a failed upgrade to the 3.12 firmware. After the upgrade the unit refused to boot up all the way and shutdown automatically after about 10 seconds. How easy is this for an outdoorsman not computer wiz? "Muddeling around with 3.08" -
Should caches be placed in sensitive locations?

Hospitals - Sure, Private residences of Prime Ministers - Pushing it here, or Presidents - Are you crazy, Power Plants - Maybe, maybe not. -
Log a missing cache as a find?
The Commissar! replied to res2100's topic in General geocaching topics
I have actually been close enough to a cache to take a similar picture and still not find it to my embarrassment! If you found it and the log was wet, you still found it! If you found the caches remains, you still found it! If a cacher who locates the “spot” of a cache and logs it as a find...??? Picture or not...Nope! To say I looked and its gone now so I’m going to call it a find…No way! To go back to the original question...How do you know you found the "spot", especially with the owner MIA? The cache could still be there and you missed it but found a really good spot?! -

Can I start logging ones I look at on-line? ! (Just kidding ) -

No Way! Not a find in my book. -
One down, thousands to go! We better get busy... But, don't forget to stop and smell the roses (or whatever) on the way to each and every one! Most of the fun is getting there!

Do you read the (paper) logbook?
The Commissar! replied to azog's topic in General geocaching topics
Ditto...I also consider the traffic in the area...if its a relatively busy location I try to log quick and get out even if I move away from the stash area to record my visit. -
Is Geocaching Kind of Nerdy?
The Commissar! replied to CoronaKid's topic in General geocaching topics
Lanyard? What laryard?! I love high-tech toys AND the outdoors...and I don't think anyone would classify ME as a nerd ! I guess it must be determined on an individual basis. You said your wife thinks you look like a nerd? She must be right, wives always are ! -
Cheezer and I have noticed this same problem for about 5 weeks now...just the other day MeriPlat said we were driving in the river when I know darn well we were on the interstate! I have suspected that the Govt. was messing with the Sats. due to the current, uh, situation.

How hard should a cache be to find?
The Commissar! replied to arrowroot's topic in General geocaching topics
I still say, do whatever difficulty you want, but also agree that it must be correctly rated. That way people know what they are getting into. I have started giving my opinion of how each cache I find should be rated in my posts and use the same standards noted above. If you use the "progrem" to rate the cache and use the answer it spits out you will more often than not be rating your caches too high IMHO. Now that NITH has been defined lets just say The Commissar likes them tough and leave it at that...It gets boaring to do drive-bys that are rated too high. -
How hard should a cache be to find?
The Commissar! replied to arrowroot's topic in General geocaching topics
is different for each cache. Some are to show off a specific location for whatever reason. Others are intended to be challenging puzzles or just challenging to locate (find - not talking terrain here). That is up to the person who is hiding the cache. So what was your goal? Did you succeed? What will you do different next time? Point being, if you want to accomplish something specific with your cache(s) you must plan accordingly. Plan being the operative word here... Oh, for the record...I like the needle in the haystack kind, and so do many of the frequent cachers I know. So if its too easy I would like the surroundings to be worth the (usually road) trip. -
Wow! Legendary Cache In Trash Out
The Commissar! replied to Jeremy's topic in General geocaching topics
Legendary! Wow... The local and regional media were informed prior to the event. The local paper is working on a story but the exposure will not be that great...The regional paper had done a story on Geocaching recently and was not too excited to do a follow-up just for some trash...Boo! As for the discussion regarding individual efforts in Cache-In-Trash-Out, our WORLD needs to see that Geocachers all pick up trash, one piece, one bag at a time...So POST that picture of one bag of trash, it is no less important than any other bag. As noted above, our Cache Clean-up Event was a great show of the commitment Geocachers have to the planet, but more often than not we work alone or in small groups and the big showy pictures will be few and far between. I hope that the Cache Clean-Up Crew has inspired people that have problem areas to do something about them. We amazed ourselves with what we accomplished in a short amount of time. The pictures are a reminder of what we can do together but we can also create mountains of trash individually... The Commissar Searching The World, For Fun! The true measure of a Geocacher (and other less intelligent humans) is based on what he/she does when nobody else is watching... -
I have a Meri Plat w/128MB card TOPO Maps & reader...When I load files to the card through the reader, the GPS only "sees" one map even though all files are there. But when I upload through the GPS all regions are seen?! I love the unit & the maps but hate the wait! The Commissar

I see posts indicating that coordinates are wrong because "My GPS" says different...My opinion is that each and every unit regardless of brand and model will at times vary and you can "learn" the habits of your individual unit...I use an even older Magellan Trailblazer XL (1996) and rarely cannot find what I'm looking for...I have a Meridian Plat. on order and will keep the XL for backup because it usually gets me to the point within 0.01 miles (about 56 feet) or closer at which time it is best (again in my opinion) to stop looking at the GPS and start looking for the cache or whatever...
