  1. I have the Garmin Dakota 10 and i love it for this exact reason. All I do is plug the usb cord in and on the geocaching.com site I hit send to GPS and it's done. Then, on the GPS i can view the hints, description and the logs, which is super helpful As for accuracy, in the city it's not very friendly and can send us into drunken bee dance mode for a while but if we walk away and approach from a different angle it can lead us in the right direction. On average I say it can get us within +/- 15 feet of it.
  2. Deff a Canadian Cacher! We just started, reaching our 50 finds milestone (I know its a small one but it's one none the less!) We have lots of fun cacheing in Ontario, and are looking forward to going out to Niagara falls this weekend for more there!
  3. We just did one today called 'The Devil Made me Do It'. once you get about 7ft away from GZ there's like a 30 foot drop, so you have to go find a way down. When you get down you then have to climb up about 3 meters (straight up) into a little spider-bat infested cavern. It was definately interesting, and made for a fun story! []
  4. We are fresh to the game, with 23 finds. So it's fresh in my mind what is frustrating! -Learning how to use a GPS. I started with a Magellan that was just insane to try to use. I would walk down the street here in Ontario, Canada, and the little arrow would move down the street in Las Vegas. Needless to say that one made its only and only trip - back to the store! Now I have a Garmin Dakota 10 and i'm not turning back. -Thinking too literally. -Bushwhacking, hopping streams, getting really really really really muddy to get to a location only to find the cache on a nice little paved path. I agree it makes it a lot of fun but it gets frustrating when you didnt even know there would be a path there! -We bypassed the 'my partner finds it before me' part by making it a competition. Currently it's 14-9 for me, but i have a feeling that will change this weekend! -Looking in the perfect spot that a cache could be and not seeing it, so spending 25 minutes looking, and in a last ditch attempt going back to that first perfect spot, and there it is!
  5. Update! we got our first DNF today, just couldn't find it through all the bushwhacking. GPSr was saying we were right on top of it but couldn't find it anywhere. I'm still baffled as to where it is, but we will probably try again when we go to clean up the rest of that area
  6. I have an iPhone 4, and I tried the intro app, and agreed it did suck. But, we decided to upgrade to the full-on Groundspeak Geocaching app (it was $9.99) and i won't use anything else (other than my GPS). It works extremely well and I haven't had many issues other than the obvious fact that you're using a phone and not a GPS so it's not as accurate. The app works fine with basic membership too. If you're willing to spend the money, i'd highly recommend this app.
  7. This is exactly how I feel. I've done all of my logs from my iPhone, because it is fresh on my mind. I have a horrible memory and if i were to wait till i get home to log them all you would end up with is TFTC, because i wouldn't be able to differentiate between the 10 caches i did that day. I don't think this is a problem with people logging from mobile apps, its a problem with the peoples logs themselves. If they were to go to a computer you would probably get the same type of log. This all said in the mindset that the people in question do know how to use their app fully. If they don't know how to work the app, then they aren't being rude, just ignorant
  8. True, that makes sence, maybe i'll put it as a note rather than a DNF because we didn't even get out of the car. This way others know. You can log it as a note if you want. But, as someone around here says in a sig file, "Logging a DNF isn't giving yourself an F." I figure that I went there to look for it, I Did Not Find it, so it's a DNF. I don't get why some cache seekers (and cache owners) seem to think a DNF holds some sort of stigma. Went back and found it last night. I guess everyone has different standards for what a DNF is. If i drive past a location and decide not to look then I wouldn't consider that a DNF. I find it interesting how we all have different points of view as to what a DNF is to us.
  9. The problem with the iphone is no matter where you are, in a field or dense trees, you dont get better than a 20meter radius. Also, our phone seems to jump. one minute youre walking in the right direction and 63 feet away, and the next you're going in the wrong direction and you're 122 feet off. It gets irritating.
  10. I would have logged the DNF on that one anyway. A DNF log that says "Arrived at GZ shortly after noon, there were too many muggles around for us to search properly. Will try again later," provides useful information for subsequent searchers. True, that makes sence, maybe i'll put it as a note rather than a DNF because we didn't even get out of the car. This way others know.
  11. You know, I wouldn't call myself a lurker, I'm looking to get my two cents in but when my two cents has been put in enough times to make a family rich, i decide to pass . Other times I don't find myself experienced enough to give a true answer. Still a newb! If that makes me a lurker, i'm proud of it
  12. I'm just starting, and in reading a lot of the newb posts, a lot of people seem to have a good amount of DNFs in their first bit. So far i'm 11/11 finds. One we got to GZ and there was people everywhere as it was in a busy parking lot, so we decided to go back at night. I don't consider that a DNF because we really didnt try. I'm actually excited for my first DNF because that would pose a good challenge, and i looovve challenges!!
  13. We just started, 11 finds so far! Yesterday, this happened to us twice! the first time our GPS told us the cache was just off the road so we pulled over and trekked into the bush. We ended up having to cross a stream and then realized there was a nice paved path, and the cache was directly off the path (like not even 10 inches off the path!). Then we had to bushwhack our way alllllll the way back to the car! The second one we parked and hiked up a hill that was quite steep (quite a calf workout too!). The cache was at the top, as well as a nice little mowed path. not sure where the path came out but we found it funny that we always take the hard way around! I say if it looks incredibly hard, survey the area to make sure there isn't a different easier way to get to where you are going! -s684
