  1. I didn't get arrested caching at sunset in an industrial park Two observations of the benefits to the game: 1) people who cached a few times but didn't really get into the game and people who haven't cached in a long long time took up the challenge. 2) missing, broken, and otherwise attention-needing caches are getting repaired, replaced or archived. Both are good for the game
  2. When I introduced the nephews, 5 and 7 then, I deliberately chose one that was described as hidden for kids to trade in. Plus it was in a nice park where even if we hadn't found the cache, we had fun hiking through the woods and fording the creek and following the gps too soon bushwhacking off trail, getting caught in the rain, racing back to the car, running into friends, etc. Now they've found more than we have. Often, they play in playgrounds while mom, dad, aunt, etc. look for the stupid little magnetic nano stuffed in a tiny crevice somewhere. Sometimes, they get a babysitter and the grown-ups go out hunting.
  3. Suggest that you take this problem to the Delorme forum. It sounds like the internal memory containing route files may be corrupted. It will be necessary to enter Support Mode to delete all route files. "Do not attempt this at home", but to Enter Support Mode, power down the device. Then depress and hold the following three buttons for a few seconds: Page+Menu+Power. Be careful in there. This is a rare occurrence. After you get the PN-60 working again, you may wish to check the Delorme forum to see that you have the latest PN-60 3.2... firmware. That's actually where I ended up. I reformatted the whole mess using the instructions on the DeLorme website, figuring that I had nothing to lose since REI will always accept returns and it wasn't worth anything as it was. Then I reinstalled the most recent software, then I reloaded the maps and PQ's. Still don't know what happened to cause the mess, but we were able to go get two Earthcaches in the pouring rain yesterday afternoon so all is right in the land
  4. Our Delorme Earthmate PN-60 is having issues. When you want to navigate to anything, geocache, waypoint, map item, it calculated the route, switches to the map screen, then displays a dialog box "Recalculate Error An error occurred while recalculating the route. Try again?" Trying again is futile. It started when we changed the batteries. Software is current, batteries are fresh, satellites are there. DeLorme's "KnowledgeBase" is slim on the topic, but the ideas posted there (remove batteries for an hour, adjust map settings, its all in your mind) are not working either. Any ideas? Fortunately we bought it at REI, so it may be going back if we can't find a solution. Thanks in advance!
  5. The coin itself is fine...the note with it and the bag that kept them together are damaged. I did send a message to the owner, but I plan on moving it along fairly soon. Thanks for the advice.
  6. I got a geocoin from a wet cache. The little ziploc was well-used (full of holes) so the note was wet. I was going to retype and print the note and seal it in a new bag. But...I'm having second thoughts since the first note was 'original' and its somebody else's and etc. Is it OK to 'improve' (or restore) a geocoin note? Is it OK to 'trash out' ruined swag from a wet cache? Or is that best left to the owner? I don't know what is proper etiquette.
