  1. Thanks for the link. I will pass it onto the cache owner and have him get the ball rolling.
  2. Found a cache that is very close to two that I have placed that is in need of an owner who will maintain it. The current owner has moved away and is basically unable to do the required maintenance. I have already, at his request put a new cache container out for him. He is will to allow me to adopt the cache. How do the original owner and I go about processing the adoption of his cache?
  3. It gets me out into nature, forcing me to get some exercise doing something that is challenging. It also takes me to place where I have never been or haven't been to for many years. I enjoy the challenge of the hunt for an ammo box, a tupperware container or even a film cannister at times. Most important is that it provides some quality time away from the hustle and bustle of our every changing world with my wonderful bride of 35+ years, away from phone, tv, computer, house work, etc where we can have a good talk about what is happening in our lives.
  4. Thanks for the replies to my question. I think I have everything worked out. Unfortunately I can't just renew the old cache permission and I will have to move the hiding spot a little bit but that is okay and will make for more caching by those who found the original one.
  5. Hi all, Just received a declination from the PA DCNR on a cache that ai wanted to place in Forbes State Forest. I am actually replacing a cache that had been archived because the container had been stolen and the original owner seemed to not care. The cache was a good one because of the hike and the great view of the area at the end point. Seems that DCNR does not want to renew cache permissions after the three year period that was granted originally because they feel that the caching crew could cause damage to the trail and the areas off the trail around the cache. I did email them about moving the cache I plan to place a bit and have gotten an okay to do that but need to change the name a bit too. No problem there. Still need to go through the DCNR process but looks like I might be able to get it placed. My real concern is for a cache I now have placed in Forbes State Forest and what happens when the three year permission period comes up. It is a multi stage cache and the hiding spot for the first stage really can't be moved. It would spoil the entire idea of the cache. The final stage could be moved without any problem though. Anyone who has gotten a renewal of permission to place a cache in a PA State Forest would you please let me know how you got it done. If you have been turned down, let me know your thoughts on that too. We need to convince the DCNR that caching and cachers will not mess up the beauty and natural wonder of their forests.

  7. I thought about leaving some signature item in a cache for the owner but soon realized that if it was something nice as you are suggesting that someone will take it out of the cache to collect etc. What I did was copy something I found in a log book. A "signature sticker" with the cachers handle, the date of the find and a thank you for the cache. This is something that the cache owner aa well as other cachers can see when the read the log. I also manage to find most log books allow some space on a page for the sticker and a few kind words about my experience in hunting and finding the cache. And the cost is not very expensive. By some label at your local office supply store and print the labels on your printer. I included the possum I have on my gc.com profile page, the gc.com logo. Let you imagination run with this idea. For micros all I do is sign my gc.com handle and the date. But for the regular sized cashes this works, its cheap and will be there for the cache owner and other cachers to see.
  8. When looking for a camera to use while caching I looked at the Kodak eashshare line at Best Buy. But the sales person recommened the Nikon Coolpix 4600 to me because I was concerned about the picture quality. The Nikon was abit more expensive but not tht much and the images are just great. It does not have the really long zoom that I would have liked but 3x optical is just fine considering the size of the unit. I carry it in my Camelback rather easily and it is about the same weight as my Extrex Legend. I also carry the camera with me just about everywhere I go. It fits rather nicely in my "ManBag". Takes a couple AA batteries with good battery life. The camera also takes a bit of a beating. I have dropped it from about waist high as well as from about 4ft off a rock onto ground with no damage other than a small mark on side. For combined pix quality, size and ease of use this little camera is great and it is 4megapixel camera to boot.
  9. islangirl, I think that if you go to your profile and view your gallery you can click on the pix of your TB and edit the image. At the edit screen you can delete the image and then using your photo editing software block out the TB number and then download that new image to your TB page.
  10. While caching in MIlwaukee we found a muggle sitting on the bench where we determined a clue for the cache might be. Of couse we just couldn't go over and boot her off the bench so instead we struck up a conversation with her that made the wait for her to leave enjoyable and got a recommendation of a nice Irish restaurant at which we could eat after finding that and two other caches.
  11. You can find the form necessary at this url: http://tinyurl.com/dx7tl This is the DCNR website. I also would suggest that you contact the person at the state park or state forest who is responsible for making the decisions about a cache placement and talk to him/her about your cache. You should seek his/her advice about the impact that your cache will have on the environment around your cache. It's kind like making "brownie points" with a teacher you need a favor from. Hope all goes well in placing your cache.
  12. Wife and I visiting our daughter in Chicago area in late May. Her eTrex Legend had arrived the day before we got there and she was eager to give it a try. We spent the weekend with her caching. Mostly micros but did a couple regular caches too. Found my first couple caches using her GPSr. Needless to say, my wife and I were hooked. Our daughter ordered my Father's Day/Birthday gift from Amazon.com before we left for home. Now I have my own eTrex Legend and I use it just about every Saturday morning as my wife and I go caching here in WPa. Happy caching, Possum48
  13. I use EasyGPS. I download the caches I will be working on during a particular trip to my GPSr and take the printouts along with me. Although I own a Pocket PC and take it with me on each caching trip I have found that it is easier for me to just printout the cache page so that I can work with it and my GPSr and a hiking staff at the same time. If I drop the paper sheets no harm is done. Also I like to make notes as I work on each cache. I record things about the hike in, the search for the cache and any problems that I might encounter to and hunting for the cache. Notes also include info for those caches that I DNF. When I get home I can then use the notes to log my cache and not forget anything that might be of interest to other cachers about the cache. Happy caching to all! Possum48
  14. Thanks briansnat for the help. Just like a lot of caches, it was right in front of me all the time! Possum48
  15. I have seen in many of the caches I have found as well as those that I am considering going after the logs often have "smilies". How does one put the "smilies" in the logs? Thanks for any help Possum48
