  1. As A long term resident of a RV park I get a little suspicious when I see strangers roaming around inside the park. I also work security here at the park and it is a pay to use park. Sounds like your idea of moving the caches outside the park was a good idea.
  2. I've flown out of LAX, John Wayne, and Ontario, and never had a problem, everything in my luggage except the GPS
  3. starting in Feb of 2001 I found 116 caches that year. We did the first 300 of the original ET power in about 8 hours in 2010. We did 475 caches of the route 66 power trail in about 10 hours in 2012. When I was doing cache runs I'd usually start Sundays , hitting the first cache at daylight an going til I either get tired or bored, my best day normal caching was 59 caches. I go through stages of burnout where I may not find any in a month or more, this year I think I've found about 57 caches
  4. as a old triton 400 owner may I suggest updating to a different unit like something in the garmin brand
  5. Hello RWS I am trying to fownload your video but get the notice of non existent video. Could you please send me the video by PM? Thanks Domingos Matos try sending him a email or try Embra
  6. My first gpsr was a lowrance global map 212 it didn't have maps the first cache I did I crossed a creek about 4 times and hiked about 3 miles, I could have come in from a different direction and only walked about a 1/2 mile
  7. I've got 2 that get dnfs from newbys fairly often, I drive by them at least once a week so I'll check them and post a note, but unless they ask for a hint I will not offer
  8. First cache I did in Feb. 2001 was dead on,that was with an old Lowrance global nav 212. I think a lot of the complaints were caused by the early etrex series, my lowrance an my maggy gold were both excellent units very accurate. I tried a etrex legend to compare with the gold and it was always off compared to the gold
  9. When Tag-a-long and I did the first 300 of the original ET trail we took turns driving and logging the caches, when I was driving I could usually spot the cache long before we got to it. Also when we do PTs we sticker the logs, it's a lot faster then signing the log
  10. Any old timers ever try USAphotomap it was a great program back in the early days
  11. I had one published in about 2 minutes, which was a big surprise :)
  12. Yeah, there used to be an etiquette that once someone had placed a cache in a park, others should find other parks for their geocaches, even if there was plenty of room according to the saturation guideline. Then there was an etiquette that you should hide your cache in a way to leave room for others to hide caches in the same park. Instead of hiding a cache in the middle of a small park, blocking the entire park, you should hide your cache at one end of the park, leaving room for someone to hide a cache at the other end of the park. Now, park trails are saturated with fungible numbered caches, each 529ft from its neighbors. I remember when it was one cache per town/city. I started down in Southern California, remember that there were only 15-20 caches in the LA-Orange county. Those were the days. I recently swapped out a log book from a cache I placed in 2003...you can see a slow change in logs as the years passed, they became more and more brief, then it just became caching names. started out down in San Diego, and would drive up to Orange & LA counties to do caches. Your first find we found about 2 months after you did. Around the summer of 2003 we spent a week of our vacation caching in Ventura and Santa Barbara counties. Oh and if anyone wants to read some long logs check out some of Yrium's logs usually funny
  13. It's always bad form to find a cache you hid. Nowthatble if you hid the cache when you were 60 years old and you are now 70, ....... Hey I resemble that
  14. I use the garmin suction mount and I'm very pleased with it
  15. yeah specially if they are from the bay area
  16. My trip has been delayed about one month so maybe more road will be open by then. The SAGEFOX RV van only weighs 4750 lbs when loaded for travel so we would make the cut but I don't expect the bridges will be in place by then. I expect to be doing a lot of backtracking to get onto the road from different access points. You might take a look at the caches between Earp and 29 Palms, plus there are quite a few north of there
  17. I hope it opens. I have been wanting to take a Route 66 road trip, but It probably won't be this year and I may not even get 30 caches. I passed by the ET caches when we went there a couple of years ago. It was interesting to see people along the highway with their heads down, but between the Inn, Camo Dudes, the "lunar crater," trilobites, ghost towns, and the Pahranagat Man . . . . I suspect that Route 66 would be similar. OH yea... I thought most cachers are in the area for the scenery. I sure was, even though we did Route 66 in 2 days we spent a good 2 hours at amboy crater and took several hundred photos as well. I'm sure there are a few cachers that zip through a PT as fast as possible without noticing a thing around them but I'd bet most, like me enjoy the experience which includes finding lots of caches, spending fun time with friends or family and enjoying the scenery. I have done a few PTs now, I have thousands of photos and so many cool memories. If geocaching were to end today forever I'd probably go to cool places like Route 66 and ride it on my bike or hike it so just like geocaching I could slow down and enjoy it instead of driving through at 70 mph. It's said that years ago the locals would take tires out to the crater and burn them and tell the tourist that it was still active
  18. mostly in my 88 Nissan Pathfinder with over 250.000 miles on her or in Mammas Pathfinder, but the 88 is special to me
  19. I've had mine since the middle of 2012, and have had no problems, I also haven't updated the firmware since I bought it.but Not sure which firmware I have, it's 5.70 I don't think it's a heat problem as I have the garmin mount and it's seen a lot of hot days here
  20. GC1427 The buzzing might be rattlesnakes, I placed it on August 8th 2001, and adopted it out when we moved from San Diego it's still active 13 years later
  21. ET trail and surrounding caches should get you there. I'd do it in October it's cooling down by then
