  1. Microsoft Edge is the default browser in Windows 10 which in 24 hours now has 19 million installs (and is rolling out in batches). Usage is growing quickly and reviews are positive across many web sites. It's completely standards-compatible and, in fact, has a higher HTML compliance benchmark than Firefox or Chrome. Unfortunately, the touch gestures - which use the standards-compliant HTML5 APIs - do not work making working in tablet mode impossible. Please fix.
  2. My daughter's girl scout troop wants to get the geocaching (fun) badge, and thought it would be fun to send out some trackables to keep an eye on (much like chain letters back in the day). There's 18 girls and they'd prefer each one get their own (otherwise, I'll send a few out with them on different adventures and they can all watch the pages) so I'm looking to get some tags in bulk. I've looked through a lot of web sites and it seems about the cheapest is $5.00/tag, but those are customized ones. Really I'm just looking for a basic tag they can attach to something to make up part of their story / adventure. Any recommendations? Many of the sites I've visited (some of which I've even bought from before for my own use) do have some bulk policies that aren't too bad, but nothing for just basic tags. Or does Groundspeak even have any options for a girl scout troop? I didn't see much on their site in the way of event sponsorship or anything.
  3. Turns out it was still buried by several feet of snow, so the 3/4 way up cache (didn't feel like going for the one slightly higher for little extra gain) will have to do anyway if we can log a cache we already found.
  4. I created a new cache on the Mailbox Peak summit (my close-by trainer of choice): http://coord.info/GC4M6PK. Originally I wanted to adopt the one that was there but the CO never got back to me. In fact, I believe _Shaddow_ is familiar with the situation. I was wondering if this could count for logging elevation gained. I know it's my own, but it was intended to be an adoption and still denotes my elevation gained (in fact, I'm doing this hike today and exchanging a trackable if the cache is accessible since there's still quite a bit of snow up there). I'll be sure to log the 3/4 way cache for at least that much gain, but I'm really hoping the summit cache can count. I'd consider packing my snowshoes up and taking the crest over to Dirtybox Peak to log that cache, but the final approach to that cache, IIRC, would be fairly dangerous when covered in snow and ice - at least going solo. Also, can we log a find on a cache we already found? I've done most of the peaks through the I-90 corridor with only a few left to do until about exit 47. I do visit the North Cascades on occasion and plan a summit bid for Rainier last this summer/fall, but the I-90 corridor is so close to home!
  5. I recently completed all active HQ GeoTour caches and really enjoyed it. I started looking for other GeoTours like the Washington State 100 Parks GeoTour but the main view at http://www.geocaching.com/adventures/geotours/washington-state-parks doesn't show whether I found a cache or not (I seem to recall I've found a few). It would be great if we could see at a glance what caches of a GeoTour we have completed.
  6. Good points all, but it may actually be possible at some airports looking out the windows. For example, two of the airports I was at recently were Seattle-Tacoma and Salt Lake City. Both have beautiful views of the mountains which could be incorporated in. I am aware of a couple of others games (dare not mention them by name, and learned about one of them while on this past vacation) but already have OCD with Geocaching so didn't want to get started on those as well.
  7. Obviously traditional caches - or any cache with a physical container at the final - are probably not a good idea in airports (especially in the paranoid US), but I'm curious why there are no virtual/Earth caches in airports. Is it not allowed? I read through many of the posting rules and didn't see anything specifically. I considered because it might require payment (at least for caches in the majority of most airports) but especially when laid over a "multi-virtual" would help pass the time and I've seen other caches that require payment so that's probably not it (well, to be legal anyway; ex: WA state parks). Are setting up virtual/Earth caches in airports allowed?
  8. Switching browsers isn't really a solution. As a web dev myself, the biggest mistake so many web devs make is browser sniffing. They should be checking for features only, like: if (typeof JSON == "object") { /* blah blah */ }
  9. Using IE10 or 11 on Win8/8.1 does not work either with the modern IE or desktop browser. I use the same username/password as geocaching.com but when I try to login I'm taken back to the login page with no error and empty text boxes like nothing happened. This works on Chrome on the desktop. It's weird because this should all be processed on the server-side so the browser really shouldn't matter. I typically do use IE11 with my tablet (Surface Pro) so to play Wherigo it would be helpful to be able to log in.
  10. I'm a software developer at Microsoft. If you'd like any help, I'd love to offer it. I started looking at porting Lua to WP when i ran across this thread.
  11. Understood, but I don't want to generate a query just to view the surrounding area. The map view already let's us filter out my hides and finds, as well as individual or groups of cache types. Seems filtering out disabled caches is a logical step.
  12. Feature request: allow us to hide disabled caches of any type on the map. I'm looking at area coverage at a zoomed out factor and disabled cache icons are the same as enabled cache icons when zoomed out so it's hard to tell until I zoom in and pan around. Thanks.
  13. That's exactly it. It also doesn't help that "Free Parking" is the name of one of the reference points for "Boardwalk...", so I thought maybe there was some weird bug. Glad to know I'm just all kinds of blind!
  14. For some odd reason, http://www.geocaching.com/geocache/GC20NH4_boardwalk-in-a-park stills shows up for me as not found on the big map (the one with other caches). When hovering over it, the tooltip also shows both the cache name ("Boardwalk in a Park") and one of its reference points ("Free Parking"). I created the log from my phone (Windows Phone) like so many others, but also tried editing and re-submitting (saving) the same log on the web site to see if that would trigger a change but to no avail. I still got credit for the find but figured I'd report this odd issue. I should also note I checked some other puzzle caches I've found and they do show smileys on the big map. It's just this one from what I can tell.
  15. I literally stumbled on this while out caching. http://sdrv.ms/13cqqRw This isn't on GC.com. I've read the FAQ, tried Waymarking.com, and didn't find PLS in the agency list for the NGS web site. I'm starting to wonder. What is this, and what should I do with it?
  16. Thanks. That makes sense. I only wish I'd done so earlier so the CO would either reply or the reviewers would archive it so I could take a new one up there tomorrow. I suppose I always could anyway and create a new cache, and if it doesn't get approved I'll just remove it next time I'm up there.
  17. Many people in the Pacific Northwest are probably familiar with Mailbox Peak. It's a tough climb and there's several GCs along the route, but the summit cache is missing and has been for a while. I had to DNF it and the CO eventually disabled it. I would like to replace this cache, but I also think it needs to be moved a little. The current GC cords are too easy to spot and too exposed to muggles when at the summit. There's a large bush just ~10' away and only about 5' down elevation-wise. I've emailed the CO a few times but have not gotten a response. I'd like to work with him to either adopt it or at least see if he's consider moving it to the area I found that's out of the way but still would qualify as a summit cache. It's been a couple months now with no reply and I'm going up there tomorrow anyway (it's a good training hike). So should I simply replace the cache or attempt to move it? I have a nice, brand new plastic ammo can so I'd rather no replace it if it will just get muggled again or the CO doesn't want it moved. I'd love to hear people's thoughts about what to do. Also, if someone replaces a cache for a CO, is it cool to sign it too? I've seen it both ways about equally.
  18. You obviously didn't try it. The problem is that the heading are also links. So press-and-hold also brings up the extended option menu for processing links. The only way to prevent this is, as I said, press-and-hold the down arrow, which also activates the drop-down, but is not part of the link. It's an attempt to provide a default action for browsers that can't handle the mouse-over. Actually, I did try it. It is the way I use to navigate the menus on my smartphone. The trick is to release just as soon as the sub menu appears, before the context menu appears. If the context menu does pop up, you just need to click on the back button and the sub menu will still be opened. I was signing my mom up and noticed on her iPad that clicking on the menu does drop the menu down without navigating. The correct events are not being handled for Chrome and Internet Explorer the, it seems. These are both used more than Safari.
  19. I have a couple of geocoins I want to remove from circulation (one I bought, and one that was unactivated and a nice souvenir of a family trip) but I can't find "Move to Collection" anywhere. All I see is "Move to Inventory", and one of them doesn't even have a log that says it was moved to my inventory (I only activated it). On the trackables list page, the only action link is "Log". On the trackable page, I only see "Move to Inventory", "Recalculate distance", and "Mark missing" (or something like those items). Several pages - including the help page - reference "Move to Collection". I'm using IE10 on Win8 x64 on a Surface Pro with all patches applied. I've also tried hovering with the stylus (which works like a mouseover) to no avail. Thanks.
  20. When using the web site to log finds on a touch-enabled screen on Windows 8 with IE10, if I click on the Log link in the popup that appears on the large map view, two tabs/windows open. This does not repro with a mouse, and clicking or touching on the cache title link also does not repro the issue. It's just the Log link that does. Apart from two tabs being opened, everything else works as expected but it does pollute the tab well after a long day of caching and requires more bandwidth from your servers.
  21. I often research an area using the large map before heading out - even with a gpx loaded on my gpsr - but it would be great to see at a quick glance what the last 3, 5, or whatever log types on the popup when you click once on a cache icon in the large map view. I could then quickly see whether I should open up the full page and read the last few logs to get an idea whether I should spend any time there or just move on. Right now I have to do that for every cache and it takes time. Thanks for considering.
  22. We get a lot of moisture here in the Pacific Northwest and I'm constantly running across wet and damaged logs. I carry a couple RITR log books with me and leave a sheet or two when a log is too wet to sign, but I'm surprised how many caches use cheap ZipLoc knock-offs that easily get ripped and don't seal. There are other brands that are decent, but is spending an extra buck or two too much? As I prepare a few themed caches to place, I'm consider what other ways to keep logs dry. Even RITR paper doesn't hold up well in standing water, so keeping the water out is key. Seems with most lock-n-locks the seals dry out. Same with the Bison tubes, though I've seen some COs put extra seals in there (good idea). But as I enjoy hiking and backpacking when out caching, I see no point in hiding micros and nanos in the large open woods. So I'm thinking ammo cans are best, but have seen some tackle boxes that look like ammo cans. Pretty much the same build, but constructed of plastic so won't rust (though ammo cans typically go years without rust). Any other ideas? Of course picking a good, dry location is key but not always an option out here.
  23. I'm not denying there isn't new ways to solve caches - I probably run into even more new ways having fewer finds than you - but I didn't need years of orienteering the old way in Scouts (which I had, and still carry topos and a compass just in case all my spare batteries are dead) to know there's no possible way to be at 595' at this GZ. There's solid ground under me for quite a large circumference around the GZ. Someone else wondered if it was the right one and that crossed my mind as well. But it didn't fit the description of the tube. Then again, with the discrepancy in the elevation vs. coordinates and that the entry was "recycled" perhaps all was not updated and it was indeed the log. Unfortunately, I didn't see the last logger from Geocaching.com on the log book, or maybe they had a different pen name at the time. I'll just have to wait for q reply from the Cal to find out for sure.
  24. No, but we typically move in 2 dimensions relative to the ground. My point was at the GZ, there's no way you can get down to 595' without moving about 50 yards off the GZ. As someone mentioned, a cache could be in a tree but then the cache would be higher not lower.
  25. My elevation is calibrated. Maybe the CO's wasn't. But there's no way it could be lower - I was on solid ground at the GZ.
