  1. As for urban myth, well I don't know. However, I haven't been doing this even a month and when I was telling friends about it, a few of them said "wow, that would be an easy way to sell drugs!" Drop your money at one location, pick up at another....multi-"stashing". OH well....I'm more interested in a different sig item!
  2. Learned about this two years ago at Scout training..... ...got my first GPSr for my 40th birthday in May. Been learning and finding ever since.
  3. Just got back from Webelos camp, I knew there were two caches in the city's park. During lunch breaks, my son and I would go looking for them. There was then an avalanching interest in what we were doing as the days drug on, so by the end of camp, we would have several scouts and parents hunting up the caches. I hope to do a fun "get together" (just get the boys together for fun, without any purposefully tied to earning badges, etc) and hide caches around our church's property, and introduce the boys, probably in teams, to this hobby of mine. As a tie-in, I thought we could buy hiking sticks, and start making them tools. Fishing rod, ruler, monkey paws, compass, etc. I would love any other ideas about enlightening the scouts about geocaching. Queenie Webelos II Patrol leader
  4. If they are hand made, I would put each in a little baggie mentioning that you made them, and maybe how they were created, and ask that they choose only one. I love the idea of a signature item more than the quantity.
  5. In my area, we have a pastor that caches.....I finally found one of his crosses...one he made of nails and picture wire. Another person in the area paints up rocks....glad to find one of hers. I kinda like the signature things. Now back to your question, I happen to be Catholic, and I think I may be interested in a Star of David for the very fact that I to learn about various cultures/religions/beliefs. Something from India or Zimbagwee would be cool as well....we also found a rock that was from Mexico...pretty neat. I tell ya, I haven't been doing this long, but my sons love the caches, but seem to be disappointed in some of the junk we encounter. Something that is nice and substantial will probably be welcomed by someone who finds it. The only thing that I don't want to find is something that I have to explain to my children that is inappropriate.
  6. I rather a sand dollar than a plastic piece of junk, I just recently picked a rock from a cache that came from mexico....it had a little story with it that made it neat. I'm from Missouri, so a sand dollar would really interest my sons. We picked a geo caching pin out of a cache, because it was from Iowa, ....those are the items that interest me most, not a gizmo.
  7. Vic, I was successful with my first searches by using mapquest and the hints, plus a lot of reading people's logs, some of the best hints are there. Like someone said look for the 1/1 caches. My kids aren't particularly fond of the micro's......nothing to trade. I have a GPS, but I wasn't savvy with it at first, and I still rely on the hints to find most of the caches. I have a hunch you could get a used one pretty cheap. Not sure if there is a geo-cache group in your area who would lend you one, or even give you one of their older units.......... Are your kids in scouts? It's possible that someone there has a GPS that you can either use or go with them. Something I have realized is that geo-cachers are a very friendly group that love sharing the experience. Good luck from a newbie Queenie

  9. Wanted to update you all..............I FIGURED IT OUT!!!!!!!!!! I am so proud of myself, I am putting in waypoints and even assigning them names..........and then navigating myself to the waypoint. Now finding the cache is another issue!!! Thank you for your support. I know it's capable of doing more, however, this is all I need for right now. thanks again, Queenie
  10. ok, since I am quite new at this...what is a Lock n Lock? Is there an actual lock on the cache? Is the combination on the cache description page? Any insight will be appreciated....maybe if I get time, I'll stop by the local Target and see. Is this in the sporting good area or housewares? ETA: Thanks Criminal for the picture and description!!!
  11. Another option is a jewelry and/or coin collectors shop.....
  12. You know, it is quite possible that he thought that was a takable item, did he leave anything? Maybe a gentle note is all that is needed. Don't crucify the guy, 13 finds isn't that many. I just started last week, and don't know all the rules. I hope people are patient with me. I guess what I would do is put a label on it, saying "take a picture, not the camera" or something to that affect. Have a great day!!! Keep your chin up!! ETA: Ooops, I just re-read your post, I thought you were the cache owner. Maybe you can email the cache owner this post.....
  13. Thanks Peter and NightPilot, you gave me the info I can use....actually, my husband took your advice, and he now has to teach me. I hope I get this figured out soon. Otherwise it's MapQuest, Google satellite maps and good clues.
  14. Ok, Septic, I give you 2 bonus points for your comment.....good find!
  15. Just turned 40, female and 126.5 lbs as of today. Recently had an unexplained 14 lb weigh loss. My goal has been this.... Under 140 until I was 40. Under 150 until I was 50. Under 160 until I was 60, and After 60, I just want to be a fluffy Grandma. If I am 135 at 60, so be it. New to geocaching, getting discouraged, so maybe a weight gain is in my future as I continue to eat Gorp while reading these forums.
  16. Yes, I have looked through the manual, and can't find what I really would have hoped it could do.... I guess my question is this....does anyone have this particular model, and could you tell me how to do it?? That is, can you punch in your waypoint, and then type in the cache coordinates, and it would give you the directions to get there. If it's not capable of doing this, point me in a direction that I could adapt it, or get another type.....
  17. I just got an eTrex personal navigator GPS for my 40th birthday this past week. From what I gather, it was around $100.00 and bought at Target. I have gone to the Garmin website with no luck. What I am wondering is this..... Is there a way to set my waypoint when I reach the area I am going to park, and then punch in the coordinates of where the cache is, and then watch the numbers as I walk? Kinda like the "hot and cold" game we did as kids. So far, I am using MapQuest and clues to help find caches, and don't really know the benefits of using a GPS. The box had to be destroyed just to get it out of the packaging, so returning it is probably out of the question. I haven't seen this covered in an FAQs, so I think I may be dreaming. Any help would be appreciated. Queenie
  18. Just got my GPS on my birthday....the 16th!!! Already know 3 local caches, but haven't gotten the chance to check them out. And that's without the GPS. I am so pumped. I learned about geocaching about 2 years ago at Cub Scout leader training....been interested ever since.
  19. Webelos Patrol Leader here.........just started the geocaching thing....
