Ish. Alviso, Ca. Local bay area residence have always joked about having to live there or how bad it is to live there because it's always been a dump. Plus the natural stinkiness of the bay always ended up on the south shore at Alviso. As a kid we used to go out to the Alviso ghost town (old hunting lodge) and tromp around in the mud and gunk. Probably why one of my kids is disabled. -sigh-

The use of Segways on hiking trails
dreamarcher replied to Jedi Cacher's topic in General geocaching topics
Don't ride off a cliff. Segway owner dies on a Segway -
When my son was younger he hated hiking, biking, anything too. I really don't think that has anything to do with other people. Sounds like you're upset about it and taking it out on everybody. I understand how you feel though.

They should have made a day of it and called the SWAT team to go after the one that bolted.

More importantly, what is I see the bomb squad blow it up but as a result am unable to sign the log book, can I still log a find or will it have to be DNF?

Published before placed caches
dreamarcher replied to Packfan12's topic in General geocaching topics
I don't have a cache listed but I have one placed. I want to know if it will fill with water, be discovered by muggles and/or gardeners, see if a couple friends can find it, etc. Seems kind of lame to send a friend out to place a cache. I think someone can make a little more effort to do it right. -
Tatally frustrated, NO fun at all
dreamarcher replied to AnneJennifer's topic in General geocaching topics
I kind of feel the same way. I originally bought my GPS for hiking and learned about geocaching from the Garmin site. I've been hiking, backpacking in some very remote areas for 30 years without a GPS. Dakota 20 + 24K map + a premium account here, and I'm wondering if I'll still like geocaching in 3-4 months plus I don't really need a GPS for hiking. $400+ for a novelty? Time will tell. -
To get around the creepy male aspect at the playground I take my 11 daughter with me. If someone needs to crawl around a play structures I just give her the directions and sit on the bench with the other parents. But yeah, don't put them nears schools. If you fail to understand why then have a couple kids. It will become painfully clear to you.

Cache only available 5 months of the year
dreamarcher replied to L0ne.R's topic in General geocaching topics
I love the idea. Makes it that much more sweet. Just make sure it's not another dumb film canister with nothing inside after I wait months to get to it. How about a multi. Part 1 you can only get to in the summer. Part 2 you can only get to in the winter. -
Not too harsh but if you put your Point #1 together with Point #2 it might be that the coin was stolen along with the cause of his cache being in need of repair. Just a thought.

You do understand it could go either way. A petty act followed by another petty act. Plus how would anybody know who destroyed it?
-
Wow. I have to agree with him. Unless someone is really, really competing for top ranking then it's spiteful, mean, and petty to delete a log entry. If someone acts petty and then it's returned upon them they shouldn't be surprised.

Because human behavior is to knock someone down to boost their relative standing. In this case it's to disqualify someone's finds. Valid or otherwise. Or maybe simply because people feel that they have to play by the rules so other do also. Who likes it when they're in 5mph traffic on the freeway and somebody drives down the shoulder and then cuts in. Why do they not have to play by the rules? On signing: Do lame caches deserve to be signed. I feel I deserve to log a find because I made an effort to find it. I've still been out caching on my bum leg. However the cache owner made almost no effort placing a leaky film canister, cigar tube, etc with a wet log. Thank you for the cache you put some effort into, but lame cache = no signing.

dakota external power supply issues
dreamarcher replied to Highland Horde's topic in GPS technology and devices
I haven't had that issue but I normally connect the USB when the unit is off. I do know another user is having similar issues to you. No resolution yet. -
Ever Gotten Hurt while Caching
dreamarcher replied to GPS-Hermit's topic in General geocaching topics
Are you kidding me. I tore my calf muscle last Saturday running up a 5' high dirt incline going to a cache. I could hardly walk for a week. Still limping. It will take 4 weeks before I can go hiking again. Sucks. Doctor said I'm not old yet (43) but I need to stop acting like I'm 20. This is the 4th injury in 2 years. -
Trivial post: Along with the software upgrade to program a beacon, Garmin also changed the geocaching icon on their devices from the cg.com icon to a different icon.

How accurate is GPS calibration? Ideally I'd like to find an official gold standard or monument that points north with a reasonable amount of accuracy. I'm sure they must exist since they do for length, weight, flatness, etc but I don't know where to even ask.

Or when you pick up the camouflaged cache and use it as a tool to search for the cache... hahaha. The opposite of always looking on the ground is true too. I was lead to a sculpture and DNF. I was obsessed with looking way up high for about 10 minutes. Later I read the the hint and it implied it was on the ground.

How do programme the Dekota
dreamarcher replied to The five Keepers's topic in GPS technology and devices
This is how I've been doing it but I've run into something odd I haven't quite figured out. Where To and enter the coords as stated above. Then when I go to Waypoint Manager I have a new waypoint called "Coordinates...". I edit this waypoint and rename it to something useful. If I later start the process over with Where To and then go to Waypoint Manager the previous waypoint is gone even though I changed the name. -
Edit: Never mind. I should have done a search first. Sorry.

What is your definition of a lame cache?
dreamarcher replied to L0ne.R's topic in General geocaching topics
How about a nano where a nano is not required. -
I think it's more about the person doing it than what is being done. To some people everything is a competitive sport and their objective is to beat you even if you're not trying to compete. eg commuting to work and you didn't see that guy pass you and the joy he had when he won. Didn't you know driving is a race. To some nothing is a sport. The actual activity/sport/race/competition is irrelevant. My personal opinion is this is a casual activity. Finds are to be shared and enjoyed by all. Making it into a sport would just ruin it. But I feel that way about a lot of things.
