  1. Thank you for this type of cache. A lot of people seem to only care about their numbers and little to nothing about the experience. A good thing about these is they can normally be fairly large cache containers and are well thought out since they are not going to see very many muggles or vagrants that will mess with them. Mountain peak caches are the best IMO. I didn't log it because it was before I knew what geocaching was but White Mountain Peak in California. 8 hour drive to the campground + 1+ hour drive to the trail-head + 4 hour hike to the peak. The round trip hiking part is 14 miles I think. I'll be going back this coming summer and make it official.
  2. This is the thing. TFTC has come to mean, 'your cache was ho-hum at best'. So when a CO has put out a decent cache, maybe something with a scenic view, a TFTC comes across a little off-putting. But as a CO I realize that not everybody who writes TFTC (and nothing else) actually means 'your cache was ho-hum'....or do they? Addendum: If they really thought that a cache with a scenic view was ho-hum I would rather hear some constructive criticism as to why, rather then just TFTC. I agree with you 100%, and that is exactly what I want it to mean when I only write TFTC. i.e. parking lot lamp skirt with a pill bottle, a log that has been full for months, and the cache description is made of a couple meaningless sentence fragments. The CO clearly doesn't care to make an effort so why would I. Often TFTC is completely appropriate for the lame cache and obvious lack of effort on the part of the CO. Otherwise if it's at least a half way decent cache then I should make the effort to write a couple sentences.
  3. Besides clothing and the obvious GPS device here's my top-5 with Importance-O-Meter. - 0|--------/-|10 - Pen - 0|-------/--|10 - Flashlight - 0|---\------|10 - Knife - 0|--\-------|10 - First Aid - 0|-\--------|10 - Water
  4. When I bought the MicroSD for mine I just went with the cheapest. I was thinking the fast memory is for high-end cameras that take multiple 10+ megapixle per second and slow memory would be fine. This isn't really a problem but the map can sometimes draw slow. Could this be because of slow memory or is that just how it is?
  5. Besides using Linux as part of my my job I do run Linux at home. Mainly Redhat, Centos, and Suse. Some non-Linux and arguably non-Linux; Solaris, FreeBSD, OpenBSD, Irix, HP-UX.
  6. I didn't have an opinion for a while, but having found several in a row recently and seeing the complete lack of effort put in by the CO I have to add my negative vote.
  7. I must say I'm the most un-creative person at writing and I can get at least 1-2 short, unique sentences. TFTC is fine if it follows something else. I was ending my logs with TFTC before but have since dropped it.
  8. I'm not a fan of urban caching for a different reason. i.e. A cache right in front of a Taco Bell where 15 people would have front row seats watching you go through the bushes. I don't even consider attempting these type. That's not to say all urban caches are bad. Too often they are just very poorly thought out.
  9. The ability to delete a basemap seems wrong. I'd contact Garmin support.
  10. I was expecting it to be closed already. Is there a forum at OC? I was browsing but couldn't find one. Maybe I'm just dumb.
  11. Well if Garmin wants people with other manufactures devices to convert then they should make their site/send-to support all devices. That would be a smart move. I don't mind their site. I'll try it. Which ever works better I'll continue to use. Hopefully they won't have a limit to the number-per-time-period you can run PQs. I can only run My Finds once ever 3 days? What's up with that?
  12. Groundspeak doesn't see terrain rating independent from distance. I'd go with the guidelines on this one and if the terrain is rough bump up the rating accordingly. I take that back. You're correct.
  13. I say the terrain rating is independent from distance. 1) You could make a note on the cache page. 2) Anybody with a GSP and/or Google maps can see how far the hike is.
  14. I 100% agree with you about parenting. I have a 12 and 17 y/o. However as well intended as you seem to be, it appears you're a little off topic. It's about expectations in this case. i.e. I take my 12 y/o daughter to a G movie and it has sex in it. I think you would agree this situation would be bad. The same way if the expectations this website and the caches are family friendly (rated G) and some turn out not to be rated G. Now if this website said "Use at your own risk" then I'd know what to expect. Off topic? You went off topic way back here, not to mention this last one! Silly Dog! It's only Off Topic when somebody calls you on it. OH! Good call, by the way. I wasn't arguing a point in that post either, was I.

  16. Old thread but still relevant and seems fun. I take: - Dakota 20 GPS - Pocket Knife - Small flashlight (single AA battery) - Dedicated hiking shoes - I'd say cargo pants but I've started wearing them all the time lately What do I intentionally leave behind or in the car: - My cell phone. I don't want to be bugged and don't want to rely on it.
  17. I hit a cache yesterday that leads right to a seemingly well used sex location. There was 3 fresh condoms when I got there. And when I say "right to" I mean the very spot the cache is, the condoms were within 5 feet. I'm not sure the CO knows because it is a beautiful trail that leads down to a creek. Fell tree over the trail so it's perfect for a cache. Unfortunately it appears to be perfect for other things too. I sure hope the cache location isn't related.
  18. Yeah 1000 total. It tells me when I've exceeded the max. It locked up for all caches. Well I didn't try all but I tried a few from different COs. You might be right that it just didn't load correctly the first time. I hope this is an isolated incident.
  19. Not sure what to say about this and I'm puzzled. I don't like to be puzzled. Yesterday I was getting a consistent lock-up when trying to view cache descriptions, hints, comments. I could navigate to the coordinates and mark it found but if I tried to view the description, hints, comments it would lock up and I had to remove the batteries. I reproduced it at least 5 times in a row. Now here's where it gets weird. I had 3 pocket queries (3 gpx files) loaded with around 1000 caches. Pretty normal for me. I copied the files from the unit to a folder on my desktop, unplugged the device and turned it on. I suspected one file was corrupt so I then tried to load 1 gpx file at a time to see which one it was. No problems viewing the caches. I then loaded all 3 back on and it works fine and no lock ups. I didn't load new files but used the exact same files. I have the latest software update. Signed, Mr Puzzled
  20. When I hear the word muggle I immediately think of Hermione Granger. She's 20 so I'm allowed ok. Thanks. haha
  21. Yeah you can exceed 2000 really fast with the wonders of PQ. PQ are almost too powerful. haha
  22. I have rechargeable Lenmar nickel metal hydride in mine and getting better life from them than I did with expensive Energizer or Duracell. NiMH and NiZn have about the same stored power for identical size. However the NiZn has a higher voltage of 1.7v. Probably fine but the Garmin doesn't list this battery type for it. You're seeing 3.6v for Li-Ions is because that's the voltage per cell. Since you can't have less than 1 cell then 3.6v is the lowest. Given the battery configuration (69 for lack of a more easy explanation) I assume the unit runs them in series. Meaning the unit is 3v. If you really wanted to hack your unit you could modify it to run 2 Li-Ions in parallel. That would be 0.6v over the normal expected voltage. Probably work but somebody else can try it first.
  23. That's just how farmers are. They're not going to listen to reason. Best thing to do is just leave. I've had something similar happen to me when I was on a public road but right next to their house and a section of closed public road. I stopped on my mountain bike at the gate. Just a rest for a few minutes before I turn around. Next thing I know the farmers adult son comes out and confronts me while holding his cell phone and tells me he just called the police. Yeah, in the 15 seconds I was there he already called and hung up. Doubtful. I was very friendly and tried to explain I was just exercising and was about to leave anyway. He tells me this has happened before and the people got confrontational. What? It was you that walked 50 feet from your property to give me some BS scare warning. When I saw it was going nowhere I just left.
