  1. Until reading this thread, I didn't realize there WAS a backup bulb in my mini (2/AA) maglight. I just looked, and sure enough, there it is! Thanks, guys! I don't plan on any night caching, but have been out when it's turning dark, and the mini mag worked fine for me.... I've also used it to check out that hole in the tree before I reach in.
  2. Awesome coin! Got mine, thank you! GO WINGS!!!!
  3. I just picked some up at a dollar store last weekend after reading this thread.
  4. Thank you flannelman! I will put them in with my trade items for next time out. I do love how much I've learned since starting geocaching. I have been to so many new places and learned some local history too. What a great game this is! Mizdeeds
  5. How about "nothing is foolproof for a sufficiently talented fool" ...
  6. Thanks for all the good ideas! I'm still pretty new at caching (and loving it!), but have used things like mini flashlights, multi-tools, carabiners, mini clips, mini first aid kit (wish I'd bought more of those!), matchbox cars, compass keychains, lanyards, bungies, AA batteries. I have a couple questions though: I bought a large multi-pack of Duracell AA's and made up some 2-packs of them to leave in caches. Is that acceptable, or do people prefer to get a sealed 2-pack of batteries? (I did wrap a bit of electrical tape around them so the + ends don't accidently connect). I have a couple keychains with a mini-level on them. Cute, and useful too! But, will the liquid in the level freeze and ruin it? I'm thinking I should save them for spring, and hopefully they will be taken before winter comes around again. Mizdeeds
  7. Is that logged a find...... or found a log??? This thread had me rolling... thank you all you very witty people! LMAO
  8. I always read the signature lines and find them very entertaining. I'm always looking for something fun/interesting/witty to use as my own, but the one I'm using now is a long-time favorite.
  9. How often does it have to be watered??
  10. You're welcome, glad I could help. I'm new here too and have found so much help in these forums, I'm glad I could return the favor! I'm disappointed too that the locationless cache is being moved, since I've only just started geocaching and the winter snow is hindering me finding any regular ones. I will be checking out wayfinding.com to see what I can do there too.
  11. This worked for me: At the bottom of the logs, click 'view them all on one page' which will take a little time to load. Then click Edit > find (on this page)... and then fill in the name of the town where the virtual you found is. All of the logs should have the name of the town they are located in, so if your town is in one of them, the search should find it. Then you can just check to see if it's the same thing you've found.... if your town doesn't come up at all, you should be good to go!
  12. If you find a cache in a place with a lot of muggles around, do you pick it up stealthily and take it back to your car, or to a more private spot, to sign the logbook and trade items?? And then, of course, return and re-hide it where you found it. Thanks!
  13. Thank you papatom, I will look into the settings for the cable. So, the USB won't make a diff in download time and I didn't need to get the adapter cable? sheesh My mapping software hasn't arrived yet so I haven't tried to download any maps to it. Sounds like I should just transfer the files to the SD card by other means and forget the cable. I appreciate all the help and comments from everyone.
  14. I understand that it supports both and have made downloads successfully to my Magellan Meridian Color GPSr. The screen for downloading waypoints referenced in the URL you mentioned doesn't address the question/request I had. If you look at the Setup GPSr screen (shown here: http://gsak.net/help/hs8000.htm), after selecting Magellan GPS, the checkbox for USB disappears, and I am forced to select Com 1, 2, or 3 for my connection. When I have it plugged into a USB port with the (serial to USB) adapter cable, selecting Com 1, 2 or 3 doesn't work, and I get errors that the GPS cannot be found. The only way I can make a direct download to the GPS is to disconnect the USB adapter, drag my tower out and crawl around behind it to get the serial cable plugged in... which is where it is going to live, because I'm just not going to mess with it anymore... at least not until I get some mapping software and want to download some maps to the SD card. Thanks for the suggestions.
  15. It's done this for a long time and fully support Explorist (both geocache and user poi) and Meridian models. See: http://gsak.net/help/hs8700.htm I'm not trying to put it on a SD card, I just don't want to have to scramble around the back of my tower to plug in a serial cable when I have the adapter cable to be able to just pop it into my USB hub on my desk. Just a convenience thing. The Setup for Magellan GPSr's doesn't have the checkbox for USB, as the Garmin one does. For now I've left the serial cable plugged in, so it's not a big problem, but I've been told that downloading maps takes a seriously long time with serial, so I'll have to pull it to plug into the USB adapter for that. Would like to avoid switching back and forth. Thanks!
  16. I've just started geocaching and downloaded and experimented with Gsak this week. So far I'm getting it figured out and it's working great. I have one request, though, would like to see a USB option available for Magellan GPSr's in the next release. Or, is it there somewhere and I'm missing it? Thanks!
  17. What do you all recommend for downloading waypoints/coordinates directly into the GPS? I've checked the software mentioned on geocaching.com, but would like to hear some pros and cons from cachers who have used that type of software. Thanks!
  18. My first find was a virtual cache that I recognized just from the brief description. It's something very unusual in the small town (pop. 2,000) I grew up in, and I knew the creator of the unusual object we had to log. Seems to me using your head instead of a machine is still okay in this game! (I did go back there after I'd purchased my GPS, just to play with my new toy)
  19. A very good suggestion, Nomade. I discovered the forums yesterday, and am finding tons of good tips here! Thanks!
  20. Thanks hairymon! I hadn't used the search for "locationless" caches, was just going by zip code and noting virtuals that way. I will be adding some of the locationless ones to my list to find!
  21. Hi Cannondale! I'm also in mid-Michigan, and just started geocaching a week ago, and having a great time with it. I haven't done a lot yet, but have a list to go look for. This darn snow is NOT helping... make it STOP!! Maybe I'll run into you and your wife out there some time. Happy caching!!
  22. My daughter mentioned this to me last winter and I thought then that it sounded like fun. Two weeks ago I went with her on a quick search for two caches, and even though we didn't find them (faulty GPS... really!), I had a fantastic time. Got my own GPS last week and went back on the weekend and found the 2 caches in mere minutes! I'm hooked!! The snow is going to slow me down a bit, but I already have a short list of virtuals to look for, and have my boots waterproofed and ready for some snow-kicking. Please tell me how I'm going to feed my golf addiction AND this new addiction when spring gets here!!??? Nothing will ever get done at home......
