  1. When you say "cheap" what are we talking about? What is the going rate or a reasonable rate for personalized geocoins?
  2. Thanks for all of the responses so far. Are all GPS units capable of having an external antenna attached to them? My son has a Garmin Legend, which is what we have been using. But we just purchased, but have not received yet, a Garmin GPSMAP 76CS and now I am wondering if we should have researched what one to buy more carefully.
  3. We are from NY and moved to AL. We were told, by some neighbors, when we first moved here that you are a yankee if you come to visit, but you are considered a D--- Yankee if you come south and don't leave. So, the name has stuck. We have lived here for 10 years now. We are considering changing our name though. Thought we might be able to come up with something more original and/or humorous.
  4. We bought our first one at a Gander Mountain and they had an extensive collection. Not sure why yours would not.
  5. To all: Most electronics do not work well in colder weather. My question is: How do GPS units perform in really cold weather, for example up in Alaska? Has anyone found this to be a problem, if so is there a solution? Just curious
  6. I checked out pricegrabber.com like team vassar suggested. I found that Newegg.com had the best price--$419.99 + 4.37 UPS Ground. Thanks to team vassar, I finally made the plunge and purchased my Garmin GPSMAP 76CS. Now I don't have to keep borrowing my 13 year old son's Garmin Legend!
  7. You think taking them out of socks is bad. Try taking every stinking one of them out or your dog!!!!
  8. Tuesday morning gas was $2.45. Wednesday night gas was $2.99 and is steadily rising. We live in East Central Alabama area, about 150 miles from the gulf coast. Many Many gas stations have run out of gas and people are lining up for blocks to wait for gas. It is real sad around here. There was one gas station that raised their prices to $5.00, now if that isn't price gouging, I don't know what is. Our local news says that we are "hoping" to be able to get gas by the weekend, but with the lines down, they do not know for sure. Yes, unfortunately, these prices will be affecting our new hobby. But let's hope that it doesn't last long.
  9. I live in this area if you still need me to go try and pick it up if it stays in the vacinity, let me know!
  10. Hello: I just submitted my 1st hide for review yesterday. I put in my description, atleast 2 times, that the area being cached was in definite need of some CITO cachers, but was otherwise a very nice place to go. My question is: This being my first hide, can someone either explain to me or direct me to the correct place on how I get a CITO or other icons of interest on my page? Thanks for any help! P.S. When our family goes out caching, we always CITO. It sure would be great if all of us contributed a little! P.S.S. Also, at Walmart and probably other similar stores, they sell these little pocket/purse size trash bag thingies. About the size of a purse size package of tissues. I am not sure how many bags come in a package, but the bags are a tad bit smaller than grocery bag size, like those you might have in your car. I carry these in my glove box of my car. I'm not sure what the name brand is on this product, but I can easily go look if anyone is interested or if the CITO site is interested in putting something like this for sale on their site.
  11. Yeah, that's why we kinda want the autoroute feature. My hubby and I seem to always argue about what road we should be turning on. We are hoping the added feature will cut down on these disagreements.
  12. We just went on a cache search last weekend that ended before we found it. We are in AL with hot humid weather, walking through tall grass and heading into thick wooded area. All 4 of us (13yob and 7yog included) are only wearing tennis shoes and shorts. We are 250 ft. from cache, when I chicken out because I am paranoid about rattlesnakes or water moccasins. Needless to say, my hubby is pissed off that I would come that close to a cache just to chicken out at the last minute. I assured him I would be happy to return when the weather is milder (and snakes are dormant) and we have long pants and maybe some hiking boots on. And maybe even have a walking stick with us, just in case. My point is, I would never ask someone to archive a "dangerous" cache, because I was to much of a wuss. It is part of the adventure of geocaching, going to places you would have never thought of before. And yes, I am counting these miserable hot, humid days and hoping we can return to the site again soon to log yet another find. P.S. My 13yos is highly allergic to poison ivy. He gets it every year from that that is in our own back yard. But, we head out caching anyway. So what if he has to spend a week with his eyes swelled shut! He'll survive and be better for it. HA HA!!
  13. I need some advice. I have made the decision to purchase the Garmin GPSMAP 76CS. From reading past posts and doing internet research I have gathered that it would be better to purchase the City Select Software rather than the Mapsource Metro software. I am wondering if it is necessary to buy the software right away, since money is always an issue, especially when you are buying an expensive unit. Can I purchase the unit and take advantage of its autorouting feature with the basemap that is preinstalled or do I need to purchase the software in order to enable that feature? One of the reasons I decided on that particular unit is for the autorouting feature, so that is a priority for me. I guess I just want to know if I can wait for the software until I can get the unit paid off or I should buy all together as a package. Thanks for any advice you can give. I am hoping to make my purchase within a week. P.S. We are currently using my 13 year old son's Garmin Legend and my hubby and I want one of our own with all the bells and whistles.
  14. My Dad talked my Mom into letting him get a GPS for their 35th anniversary. He wanted it for fishing and hunting. When he read the owners manual, he found out about geocaching. We went to visit him over the kids summer break and found our first at a local cemetary. I've been hooked ever since. My Dad bought my son a Garmin Legend for his 13th birthday and we have been using his. I have talked my husband into letting me buy one of our own. We are all addicted and go just about every weekend, weather permitting. Our 2 kids aren't as addicted as my husband and I are, but we drag them along anyway.
  15. I am a woman/wife and I enjoy the "obsession". I am the one that introduced it to my husband and this is what our family occupies our time with on the weekends. What is wrong with your wife?????????????????
  16. Amazon.com has the GPS 76CS for $423.93. No shipping charges! WalMart.com has the GPS 76CS for $421.88 but you have to pay for shipping.
  17. My son took his GPS in his carryon. He wanted to see the cruising speed, altitude, and be able to say where we are at any given moment. He waited until the pilot okayed all electronic devices before he turned it on and he did have a window seat. No one gave us a problem and the xray machine didn't seem to cause any problems with it.
  18. Thanks for the advice. I was considering putting trash bags in the container itelf. You are right, the trash is only around the party areas and not in the woods where people have to do a little hiking.
  19. Thanks for the info. I had compared the 60CS and 76CS, but the 115mb memory was real appealing. Maybe we ought to reconsider and go with the 60CS. I will definitely have to look for a sporting goods store around our area to visually compare. We don't have much in our general area as far as decent sporting good stores, so I have been trying to comparison shop on the web.
  20. I have a perfect place for a hide. The problem is, it is trashed up due to the teenagers hanging out, especially this time of the year. Our family has gone there a couple of times to clean up the junk because we live near and get sick of looking at it. Other than this, it is really a beautiful place(near a waterfall) My question is, How do I place a hide with a request to have people CITO? I'm not sure I can request it? Would it be poor etiquitte to do this?
  21. The TOPO map is on CD, just was not sure what good it would do us to install it. Sounds like maybe I should. We went to a mult this weekend similar to what you described. Got all chewed up by briars, not to mention the ticks, but we had fun!!! We are from NY but have lived in AL for 10 years now. My kids have the interesting accent, a bit of a mixture. I'm still yankee all the way.
  22. We are a family of 4, kids are 13(boy) and 7(girl). Just wanted to introduce myself into the game. My Dad introduced me to the game while I was visiting. I am totally addicted. We bought my son a Garmin Legend for his birthday and that is what we have been using, but hoping to purchase one for myself and my husband so we don't have to keep "borrowing" my sons. Does anyone have any input or comments on the Garmin GPSMAP 76CS. That is the one that we are considering, but will consider any advice on others. We want one with all the bells and whistles, although I am not exactly sure why. My sons Legend came with a TOPO map, but have not used it. Not sure what good it will do us for what we use it for. This new hobby is perfect for our family. My husband is an outdoor type and I have always been one that likes games. What better way to combine the 2 interests. We just absolutely love it! It has become our new weekend past time. We are considering starting to search for benchmarks as well, but haven't seen much input on that. Is it possible that we are already addicted after only 2 months and 9 finds?
