1. Just a simple query against my geocache database and plotted on Google Maps. I've pretty much done the same thing that was being done for the GCUK map
2. Borrowdale Valley, good selection of caches, start at Grange, look on the OS map for the obvious circlar walk http://www.geocaching.com/seek/nearest.asp...p;lng=-3.161600 Staveley for 'Secret Staveley Series' and 'Jason's Jaunt' - plus highly recommend checking out Wilf's Cafe, to find it follow the cyclists and walkers in Staveley http://www.geocaching.com/seek/nearest.asp...p;lng=-2.814167 Caches around Grasmere and Rydal - make sure you taking Loughrigg Terrace and the Rydal Caves http://www.geocaching.com/seek/nearest.asp...p;lng=-3.008483 Would also recommend caches in the Hodge Close but most of these are premium only at the mo, parking available at the disused quarry http://www.geocaching.com/seek/nearest.asp...p;lng=-3.054200 If you really want an adventure the try the Quest for the Ring of Power, best spread over two days, 1-4 on day one and 5 / 6 on day two http://coord.info/GCYJTC http://coord.info/GCYJT8 http://coord.info/GCYJT4 http://coord.info/GCYJTK http://coord.info/GCYJRQ http://coord.info/GCYJRG
3. Recommend Facebook users watch BBC Click (8 mins in) for a walkthrough on how to setup your Facebook security settings http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b00ln...ick_04_07_2009/
4. What I have done is in the friends section I've created a 'geocacher' list, those that have the same avator as here go straight into the list and those I'm unsure about but have had the same shared geocachers so been easy to identify also go in the list. If I can't identify them as being a geocacher or directly know them then I don't add them, sometimes I need to look through who they've added to figure out if I should know them of not, tricky when peoples names change.
5. I'm on Facebook - http://www.facebook.com/david.j.whitehead and also on Twitter - http://twitter.com/lakeuk
6. For England, at least, it looks like Garmin have chosen to use the "Historic Counties" (see Wikipedia). If you cast your mind back to February 2008, there was a long discussion in here about the merits of various county naming schemes. Yep - our local caches are under the old county of Westmorland
7. Your coin is in a multi cache (GC1TJCZ) set by Schokokekse and Boom
8. Not sure it's a goer, the site would need to be much better than the leading site plus you'd have the big problem of how to get enough caches in it for it to be useable, you can't use the details from this site unless the cache owner copies their details over. I think the only way forward would be to look at bring back www.geocacheuk.com and improve on it (without impacting the geocaching.com model), this site was very popular for rating caches/downloading very basic geocache locations/stats on cachers.
9. Alot of cachepages do have coding errors which may cause errors when exported as xml like for send to gps, for example the dodgy characters at the end of this description GC1E3XR Some applications to get round the need to do conversion for xml put html they want ignored by the xml parser within CDATA tag <xml tag> html here </xmltag> http://www.w3schools.com/XML/xml_cdata.asp
10. Back home, heres the link, looking cool, like the contour information in the maps http://ammotin.com
11. No harm posting the info, progress on the app is already out in the open through his blog and twitter feeds Looks very interesting, especially in the intergration with open mapping, I may be looking at dumping my homebrew google mapping app for it.
12. Don't have one, but having looked at the Asus 1000HE Netbook and does look tempting, it has a 6cell battery which Asus say gives 9.5hrs, and regular users have quoted getting over 8hrs I'd keep an eye on http://www.hotukdeals.com, there is alot of competition in the netbook market with lots of deals regularly coming up, a recent one was tesco selling a netbook for £135
13. I've used it a few times on caches which have been open but have been changed to PM for what ever reason by the time I've come to log them.
14. Also worth looking at twitter where geocachers regularly post on their cache finds linking to photos etc... You can easily pick out relevent posting by using TweetDeck and in puting a search for geocaching OR geocache
15. 1st 10 caches I went for were with just a os map, found 6 of them, good test before deciding whether to buy a gps
16. Use you debit card with a paypal account and you won't be changed the £1.50 as paypal charges your card in sterling but pays Groundspeak in dollars at that days exchange rate
17. Z22 will be ok with cachemate http://www.smittyware.com/palm/cachemate/
18. Pay with your credit/debit card via paypal and you won't be charged extra by your bank
19. I wonder if their database is getting over loaded and instead of investing they're looking a ways to reduce the number of active caches listed starting with those less visited
20. Geocaching Twitters can now more easily follow like minded twitters by using the WeFollow directory http://wefollow.com/tag/geocaching You can also add yourself to the WeFollow list
21. Looking at other local caches in the area, they seem to fair the same, one had 2 finds on the day of release and no other finds since. Maybe it's not a popular area, maybe look as some popular caches in the area and work out why - local, listing desc, photos etc...
22. Just watched it on iPlayer, 17mins 45secs in:- http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b00hz...s_9_Shropshire/
