  1. Use G7ToWin (http://www.gpsinformation.org/ronh/g7towin.htm) and a spreadsheet app like Excel. Get a sample loc file, Load it into G7ToWin, Save as a CSV (comma delimited file) from G7ToWin Load CSV file into Excel, Replace Lat and Lon details with yours - change any other details you're interested in, Save CSV file, Load CSV into G7ToWin, Save as loc file from G7ToWin Done!! 2. Went up to the Thunderstone today found the cache no problems but I hate to say it but 'N 54 32.038 W 002 38.979' puts you 300ft from the cache and the stone. Looks like its a case of one digit wrong - my gps give me 'N 54 32.038 W 002 38.879' as being spot on. Nice place, good cache to get if you're short of time, the stone circle along the same road is abit of a let down though. Dave
  3. I plot my points on google maps, I download all the points in the UK into a database, update the list with details of ones I've found. Then I have a local webpage that picks out of the database all the points that are relevent to the current view and plots the points. Colour coding the points :- Yellow for found Red for New (placed in last 6 weeks) Green for other cache I use it to decide which area to goto, click a marker of a cache to take me to the relevent geocaching.com page to read the details. sample available here http://lakeuk.beplaced.com/map/cardiff.htm doesn't run that well over the net, but too great on a local webserver (localhost/map/)
  4. She's having a few problems changing the details of her cache :- Gwendolyn posted a note for A THUNDERSTONE (Unavailable) (Traditional Cache) at 8/17/2005 Log Date: 8/17/2005 I am afraid that I shall be achiving this cache on Sat as I am unable to change the co-ordinates to the correct ones.
  5. How long should it take for cache details to be published from when it was placed. Cache 'Three Old Men' was placed on 16th April 2005, but was only published on the site yesterday? http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...e6-20cd638320a0 Dave
  6. Thought some of you would be interested on a route I did in the past 2 weeks inhunting for 3 caches on a 10 mile route round Coniston Old Man (Lake District), sucessfully found 2 of them. Using the details from my Garmin Legend I've plotted the route on a Satellite Google Map (link below), as the route is plotted on the map small photos appear of the trip - also displayed is total distance covered, altitude, speed, time so an idea of the terain can be gained. Coniston Old Man cache hunt - http://www35.websamba.com/lakeuk/walk.htm some large photos are available at http://lakeuk.blogspot.com/
  7. Nige - If only you'd posted your second note before 2pm, I went up to the offical Thunderstone this Afternoon to see if there was anything obvious, followed the local paths in the area and ended up being chased twice by 40 excited cows which the farmer had a good laugh at. Along the route found about 3 outcrops of limestone and loads of granite boulders, but no hiding places. This site didn't seem right for the cache as there is no right of way to the stone and parking only realistically available at Shap. Wasn't expecting to find it anyway with no co-ords. Along the route thought I was going to see a tornado when a spike came out of a black cloud base over Haweswater area, it got half way to the ground before moving back into the cloud base. That was my que to head back to Shap. On the walk back the heavens opened and I didn't have my proofs with me (that'll teach me!!), lower part of me got soaked but luckily my waterproof map saved the upper part of me from getting soaked. Looking at the next lot of co-ord's it looks like the cache placers GPS unit's are ok put the placer has noted down the co-ord wrong (blaming their tools!!), I won't be rushing up there for a FTF, already ticked off FTF on the list of must do's. It's only 20mins from me in Kendal but I'll wait till I know if it's going to be removed or not. I think the placer has made it clear through their corrospondance to yourself that they are reluctant to sensably deal with any issues with the cache, I think it'll be best that it is removed - the placer lives quite a distance away which maybe the reason for the reluctance, shouldn't a cache only be placed if you're prepared to maintain it? Glad you liked the Jeep4x4 I dropped of at Scout Scar, it was my first as well.
  8. If it's a multi then I leave a note, anything else like a trad/micro then I put a DNF
  9. I've been trying to figure out the Sick Clanger cache puzzle for weeks, so far only one person has done it. http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...0b-f1590773b855 Anyone got any knowledge on DNA?
  10. You still need to look through each cache details to if it's close to you and not at the other end of the country it would be quicker to do a search on postcode
  11. Seems greasemonkey 0.3.5 is causing the problem, type into Google 'greasemonkey 0.3.4' and install that version google throws up - this has worked for me.
  12. You've certainly jumped up from your first crop of cache finds, to try the 5 star GCNPNG and GCKVA9, I've not tried any 5 stars yet but if I successfully find these in future I'll keep you in mind. I'm currently doing the rounds of the south lakes, started out using just a map with a 50% sucess rate before deciding to get a gps, had no problems with the gps with finds so far up to 3star. Dave, Kendal
  13. Garmin Legend loaded with contored maps of northern england, mainly the lake district. Use OS map to get close to the cache by car, then gps. Having a controred map on my gps helps alot in deciding whether to walk over or around a hill to get to a cache.
  14. This scam was on the radio today http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/3808397.stm
  15. I would recommend going for a model that can be recharged from the cradle, I have a Palm VIIx (I don't recommend this) which takes AAA batteries but goes through batteries like there is no tomorrow. I use rechargable aaa's but my main problem is when I come to replace them you only have a couple of minutes to change them with decent batteries - this palm seems to be fikkle to rechargable aaa's which need to be fully recharged Added to this the VIIx is wireless (now obsolete) and an internal battery is charged up on the aaa's to serve the wireless facility - you can disable this to conserve your batteries, but you get an error message telling you it can't charge to internal battery everytime you use the palm Would be good to put the palm in a cradle to have it recharge.
  16. Well tonight I had a situation where I was unable to sign the log book for the following cache :- GCPNQG 'Lilian's Lookout' This cache was newly placed today but no pen/pencil was available with the cache when I found it to sign the log so I took a photo of the cache and included it on my found log as evidence of finding the cache. So in my situation would you still expected the log to be signed by me in some way?
  17. Definately all fakes, I've been watching the 'sick clanger' cache (not figured out the code yet) - there is no way it he could of solved the puzzles and found the caches in all these cache. Added these are new caches placed in the last month, plus why hasn't he picked up other caches in the areas. I've plotted his finds on a map here :- http://www25.brinkster.com/lakeuk/geo/tb1000.htm
  18. Some of you may of heard that google has launched a developer area for people wanting to use there google maps system for no commercial use. http://maps.google.com/apis/maps/ I've being playing about with it and have put together a page ploting my (newbie) successs/failers to date. http://www25.brinkster.com/lakeuk/geo/finds.htm Any other developers out there feel free to have a play about with my code.
