  1. Came across the ontheair site which is in a testing period, slowly opening up access to users - it's strap line is Live conversations with interesting people, now does a geocacher equal an interesting person, well I think so !! I've created a Geocaching channel (link at bottom), that anyone can goto and try out, I won't detail how to use it, we're all geocachers after all, we can figure these things out but in short their three groups of users:- Hosts - A host that drives the discussion with the guest, control who next in the queue is the next guest Guest - Those that want to have conversation with the host on a subject of theirs or the hosts choice Viewers - Watchers of the dicussion between the current host / guest - can add comment via a irc style chat interface Few discussion ideas:- Advice on setting a cache Advice on finding cache Placed visited, recommendations Geocaching Podcast - audience particpation Geocaching.com website changes discussion Openstreetmapping Best geocache boxes Technology advice - ie gps recommendations For the moment I'll leave you all to try it out Ontheair - Geocaching - Channel 235
  2. I had an intermittent problem with a corrupt LCD display on my Garmin Legend which a temporarily fix was to give the unit a hard whack, this wasn't good for my hand so guessing that is was a cable that had worked loose I decided to take my legend apart and at the same time video the take down and putting it back together. I've posted it on YouTube, while the video is long hopefully it'll be useful to someone to know what's involved. If the rubber banding round your etrex has lost it's stickiness then the latter part of the video I show how the reseat the rubber banding securely round the gps.
  3. It does seem PC Plod has been lax in checking facts out, you would of thought that whilst the bomb squad was being called out that they would of checked what the unfortunate cacher had to same and checked up on it, does take much to get control to look up a website. Also why is PC Plod asking the cache owner to do the legwork in having other local caches remove, why isn't PC Pod getting in contact with GC regarding these other caches. I don't understand how the poor cacher could be cautioned and would guess then worried him into it in-order for Plod to try and save some face at the OTT nature of getting the bomb squad out.
  4. 1. Would you listen? Yes 2. Would you participate? Email? Yes Voice? Unsure, probably put listeners to sleep 3. Would you make suggestions for future podcasts? Yes 4. Elsewhere? 1st iTunes, 2nd RSS, 3rd Webpage to read about content I listen to alot of podcasts on iTunes from http://twit.tv/ worth checking out for tips and also http://revision3.com/systm/podcasting
  5. I've got a ipod touch and sometime use it with offline geocache details that I get before hand using greasemonkey script GC Tour, free windows software Bullzip to print to pdf and free ipod app Discover to view the pdf on the touch. Works very well Follow this visual walkthrough I've done of what to do on the windows side:- http://screenjel.ly/watch/QNfBVECu11g software used:- Firefox browser Greasemonkey plugin for firefox GCTour greasemonkey script Bullzip - http://www.bullzip.com/products/pdf/info.php Discover - http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore...416855&mt=8
  6. I'd recommend using GCTour to geocache details, following link is a guide I did for saving details as pdf's which I view on my ipod touch (assume android can view pdf's), you can also download gpx (containing basic details) http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php...t&p=4085267
  7. Another vote for making it a puzzle so it's clear it's something out of the ordinary. I have logged finds on caches I've not sign but always taken a photo to prove why I can't sign the paper log Undecided on whether to delete the logs, I'd probable leave it be, change to puzzle then delete any new unsigned logs In the summer I found a hard cache which the previous 'finders' hadn't signed, it was obvious reading their posts that they hadn't found, just sent the owner a photo of the log and left him to decide what to do. Sometimes the game is taken too seriously
  8. I'd have a t-shirt with a mosiac http://sxoop.com/twitter/
  9. I'm too great at the puzzle caches, but in Kendal these get my pick:- Alphabeticus Viperion - http://coord.info/GC1HG9E 5 Micro Mania Madness - link to one of them, http://coord.info/GC1F7TT Recommend taking the bus to Staveley which is between Kendal / Windermere to do a few caches and while you're there make sure you have lunch at Wilfs Cafe, also in the same complex as Wilfs is a bread/cake shop called More that won 3 awards in this years Great Taste Awards include the top award for a gluten-free muddee (Choc Brownie). Chris Evans who was one of the judges raved by it on his radio 2 show as well as the bakers speak - sobbing all round - Vid Another good stop off point with Rydal to have a short walk up to Loughrigg Terrence for some excellent view
  10. I've got a ipod touch, alot of the applications are limited as you need access to the net, but I've got a offline solution using greasemonkey script GC Tour, free windows software Bullzip to print to pdf and free ipod app Discover to view the pdf on the touch.
  11. There already is a rss feed, I have it on my igoogle, it's how I view what the hot in geocaching
  12. All geocaching twitters get yourself added to this list:- http://wefollow.com/twitter/geocaching
  13. I try to post photos with my logs where I find they add value, I do find the upload slow even when I modify the photos to fit in with the specs. I am think though whether in my log to put a link to my Picasaweb album instead as all my photos are geotagged and sync'd to my local Picasa. I think this would give a better experience to the viewer as they can see exact where the photo was taken, get an idea of the route I went. I can label all my photos locally and they're automatically sync'd against my online copies (excellent for correcting word blindness) What would be good is instead of uploading a photo, you have the option to provide a link to the photo on a service like picasaweb/flicker, to the end viewer it looks like part of geocaching.com but saves on their bandwidth plus they can use addition info like geotags to enhanced the log. http://picasaweb.google.com/David.J.Whiteh...0808WetSleddale
  14. Use something like the Greasemonkey script GC Tour to print out cache details or if you have a device that can display pdf's like a iPod touch then you can does something like shown in the following video walkthrough:- http://www.screenjelly.com/watch/QNfBVECu11g
  15. Archived Tarn Hows cache (don't think it's been picked up yet) - http://coord.info/GCWDM0 If you got canoes then make sure you do this one on 23rd Aug - http://coord.info/GC1TQVR (sadly we passed our canoes on a long time ago)
  16. Had a thought, could a facebook/twitter checkbox be added to the 'log your visit' page using greasemonkey, and are any GM experts out there willing to attempt a script?
  17. Recommend listening to the 'ask permission' episode of the geocaching podcast http://www.geocachingpodcast.info/2009/08/...permission.html
  18. I think this is a great idea, agreed it would be annoying seeing an automatic post for every log but it would be good to see optional tick boxes on the log writeup page where you could tick if you want a find status sending to your Facebook Connect and/or Twitter accounts.
  19. It was a repeat of Law & Order: Criminal Intent, Season 4, Episode 21, The Unblinking Eye. After a young actress is gunned down after an evening out with her boyfriend, Goren and Eames initially focus their attention on a young man who had showed an unusual interest in the couple, but soon realise that there is more to this case than meets the eye. A jealous and seemingly obsessive ex-girlfriend, a best friend who never made it as an actor, and a grieving boyfriend who seems too good to be true lead Goren and Eames down another path, one where the key to exposing the truth about the present depends on exposing the lies of the past.
  20. With new caches I always check the cachers history, you can gleen alot to determine whether to rush out for the cache or how long to spend searching for a cache. A recent cache I was FTF (GC1PNA8) on was one I initially held back on and then went for as a challenged, finding it 313ft away from the quoted co-ords. No point being negative in a log, just give you experience and send a PM to the owner with positive advise to improve their listing and cache
  21. Currently 47318 caches listed = 95 queries
  22. This ones the most details, each cache is represented by a single blue pixel
  23. Good the hear the possibility of the site coming back from the death, found it good to help with basic planning and cache ratings. My day job is spent delving into the depths of databases, table relationships (don't always get on ) and sql, if any help/advice is needed on database table structure and sql queries then happy to help
