  1. Wow, wish I knew which one this was so I could put it on my to do list. Looks very interesting.
  2. I have been out of the loop, so to speak, for awhile in geocaching and gps. So, I hope that my reply is relevant to this post. I had a problem with my Merigold not showing topo lines when they were clearly showing up on the computer (Mapsend Topo 3D USA). After much frustration and hair pulling, I came across an obscure reference to this problem on a web search. Turns out that if you have the software installed on any hard drive other than the c drive, topo contours will not upload to the gps. Sure enough, I had the program installed on my d drive. I uninstalled it, reinstalled it on the c drive, and magic...it worked perfectly. So, you might give it a try. Hopefully it will work for you! Take care. RadioCAD
  3. As far as maps go, Garmin's Mapsource Topo is 1:100,000, Lowrance Mapcreate is 1:24,000 and I believe that Magellan's Topo 3d USA is also 1:24,000. I have the Magellan and Garmin software and Magellan wins hands down. I absolutely love the detail. As for Garmin, in the back country, its pretty much worthless for detail. I have been having problems transfering the topo maps from the computer to the gps though and am thinking about going with a Lowrance next. Maybe the third time will be the charm for me.
  4. Well, I dont have DR, only T3D. When getting the map ready to transfer, I have both the topo and the poi options checked (bold T and P), and when I toggle them back and forth, I see the difference in map size (disk space). So, it seems that the topo on the computer software is working, but just not making the transfer to the gps. At this point I am out of ideas and ready to call Magellan. We'll see what happens...if that doesnt fix it, Lowrance, here I come!
  5. I think that's it...exactly what I need. Maybe the only thing that would possibly get this merigold to work...having all kinds of problems with it. Later...
  6. First of all, I have been having some trouble transfering topo maps with my Merigold lately. So, I dont know if the problem I had today could be related to that or not, but here is what happened: We were hunting in a remote area and the gps was getting epe readings of approximately 20 to 120 feet (depending on the tree canopy) and the map was tracking fairly closely to the road that we were driving. Then all of a sudden, it shot our position from where we were actually located (Western Washington) to the northern part of the Canadian Northwest Territories. And, as if that was not bad enough, it showed that we were traveling at over 500 mph while standing still and it then proceeded to create two of its own waypoints (I know that I did not create them because of the names and descriptions). Now, all of this, except the waypoint creation, I could understand happening for a brief amount of time IF the gps lost reception, got some eroneous errors or something else very strange happened. But I would expect it to be a VERY short amount of time and it to return to normal soon after. This was not the case. This thing stayed that way for about 20 minutes and did not correct itself until I re-initialized it. I really dont know what to think about this except to ask if anyone else had very odd readings today. If it was just my unit, I am starting to lose faith in Magellan fast. Any thoughts? Thanks.
  7. Thanks for the info on this. Unfortunately, though, it wont work on my unit. I do not have an option to turn on or off the topo lines under the display menu. I have the standard options (waypoints, track, poi's) but do not have any option that mentions topo. In fact, I have all boxes checked to be displayed. I think the problem may be in my topo software and/or the transfer because I found out that I am not able to do profiles on the gps either. I just get a screen pop up that says info from the cd is required. When transfering maps, I always have the "T" and "P" checked for topo and poi's. So I dont know why it is not sending the topo information. Any other thoughts? Thanks again.
  8. It has been quite a while since I have read or posted anything here, so hopefully this topic hasnt already come up lately...but here goes: I have MapSend Topo 3D USA and have a 64 mb file loaded on the 128 mb SD card in my Magellan Meridian Gold. I use a card reader and have no problems transfering maps, routes, waypoints, etc. My problem is this though... I am not getting the gps to show the detailed contours that I am able to see on the computer. Even with the map detail on highest and the detail map loaded from the card, I still only get detail enough to show city streets, county roads, logging roads and the such...no topo at all. I absolutely love the MapSend maps on the computer though. The topo is great...30' contours and lots of detail...but on the gps...nada. Anyone have this experience also? Is this normal and something we just have to live with, or is there a way to bring topo detail to the gps? By the way, my Merigold software is release 5.40 Thanks everyone.
  9. Thanks again everyone for the responses. Another question has come to mind though... I read somewhere (Magellan's site maybe?) that it is recommended to use a card reader (data transfer unit) to load maps, transfer maps, etc. to/from the card when using a card that is over 64mb. Is this a must, or do the larger cards just function better with the reader? Now that I know that I can, I would like to get a larger card. But, do I need the reader also, or can I just do the map transfers with the card in the gps? Thanks again. You guys have been a big help. RadioCAD (previously GPS Land Surveyor)
  10. Thanks everyone for all the great responses. Now I know what I can do with my Merigold. I appreciate it.
  11. I got a Magellan Meridian Gold a little while ago and now want to get the MapSend Topo software for it. My question is this: How large of an SD data card will it take? I see that Magallan offers their cards up to 64mb. Is this as large as I can go, and also, will third party cards (that are larger than 64) work? Thanks for the input...I appreciate it.
