  1. Actually, I'm not sure what you did, but you reset almost everything in the query, including the name. I think the only thing it remembered was the state. Maybe I just happened to go to the PQ page while you were editing it; I don't know. I was able to re-enter it, though, so no harm, no foul. Thanks for fixing it.
  2. So change your PQ to be 2007 instead of 2008 and you'll be fine If I could edit it, I'd do that. (Note: To answer your next question, I can't delete it either.)
  3. One of my Pocket Queries is set up to get caches in my state that were placed since a certain date. When I created the query, I told it to get all caches placed between that date and some date in the distant future, in 2008. Now, when I click on the query to attempt to edit it, I get a server error. Here's the query (This link is probably only useful to Jeremy) And here's the error:
  4. Just so as not to further muddy some already pretty opaque waters, please note that "copyright" as such doesn't apply to ideas, only to expressions of those ideas. The sort of intellectual property protection that applies to ideas would be patents, and the kinds of things we dream up for geocaches generally aren't worth patenting. That said, I'd still give credit if I borrowed someone's cache idea, and I'd only borrow it if I had their permission to do so.
  5. Lots of people "cheated" on this (now archived) cache. As the first person to admit in a log to having done so, I obviously didn't consider it cheating to save myself the 50 mile round trip to get the other stage. We did finally get that stage, though.
  6. The "hide and seek a cache" page already has such a link, so if you can stomach an extra click, just use the search page instead of the quick search tools on the main page.
  7. Really Old Markwell wherein we discuss how to get the coordinates without bothering to solve the cube.
  8. Just because Microsoft likes to think they know better than you do doesn't mean everybody does. GPSBabel assumes you know what you're doing, so if you didn't put .mps on there, why should it assume you didn't mean what you said? In the real world, "extensions" are meaningless. Programs and operating systems that depend on them are inherently broken. GPSBabel wasn't written for Windows originally, so it doesn't suffer from Windows' problems.
  9. Thank you for your very helpful report. Next time, please consider telling us what you're trying to do and what the error message says.
  10. This is a pretty good deal, too, especially with the free shipping. Hm. I qualify for the rebate. If it weren't for the fact that Magellan rebates are illusionary, I might seriously consider that....
  11. My worst was a rusty nail in each foot at this cache. (For those who are wondering, I'd had a tetanus shot less than a year before when my finger and a table saw got intimate.)
  12. Huh? Are you talking about the Penrose Tribar?
  13. Actually, hunt.gpx will contain nothing. You know the options are esoteric when the chief babel-head gets 'em wrong. gpsbabel -i gpx -f biglist.gpx -f hers.gpx -f yours.gpx -x duplicate,shortname,all -o gpx -F hunt.gpx
  14. I'm not so sure about the DirectRoute requirement. I have two different maps on my Plat, from Topo, and I have no problem switching between them when I cross the state line. It doesn't happen automatically, unfortunately, but it's not hard to do. In case it matters in some way, I put them there with a card reader rather than through the serial port.
  15. I used a Palm Vx and Magellan GPS Companion for a couple of years. The sad truth is that the software that comes with it sucks horribly, and the third-party software, while better, is still missing a lot of features you can get on even the most basic standalone consumer GPS receiver. You can get most of the functionality you want by combining a handful of different programs, but it doesn't match the ease-of-use you'll get from a standalone unit. The only thing the Palm gets you that the standalone GPS doesn't is paperless cache descriptions, and I don't think they're worth the tradeoff. (I carry the Palm and the GPS receiver, now. The Palm stays in my pocket while I'm on the trail, which makes it a lot less likely to get dropped or whacked by a rock.) I would recommend buying the standalone GPS receiver unless you have some other reason for wanting the Palm. If you'll only ever use it for geocaching, do yourself a favor and get a dedicated GPSr instead.
  16. On Windows ME, it should just be c:\windows
  17. Yep, you missed the part of the instructions that says If you copy the two .ico files and the .html file to your Windows directory, or (if you're concerned about putting things in your Windows directory) edit the .reg file and change the references to "%windir%" to point to the directory where you unzipped it, it should work.
  18. GPSBabel does more than just convert files. It can also merge files, use 'ignore' lists, remove duplicate waypoints, and filter your waypoints by various interesting criteria.
  19. But ".exe" is just fine, eh? Just because VBScript is the language of choice for Outlook worms and other braindead exploits doesn't mean it's inherently bad. Just how stupid would I have to be to make a worm, virus, or other destructive type of software available on a web page whose domain is registered to my real name and address?
  20. What does it do when you try to use it? Or, what doesn't it do? Do you have the button on your toolbar? Does the menu item appear in your "Tools" menu? If you give more details of the problem you're seeing, perhaps I can help you to fix it.
  21. But if you don't occasionally give them dollars, they'll stop asking, and then your source of income will dry up.
  22. There's a reason for that: it crashes regularly, and (believe it or not) can actually cause other applications to crash without it even being installed (try running TealDoc when there's a Mobi document on your Palm, whether or not Mobi itself is.)
  23. ooh, a thread where I can reprise my old signature graphic (go ahead. Hit reload a few times. You know you want to):
