  1. I don't mind it not showing on the GPSr itself, I was just trying to figure out a way to keep the info with the waypoints as they move to and from EasyGPS and my GPSr. It's not really that big of a deal. It's just somewhat difficult to manually type in each cache ID into either geocaching.com's search engine or coord.info/GCnumber I guess I should be less lazy and just deal with it Thanks for your answers.
  2. When I import .GPX files the caches listed come with all kinds of nice information, including "click to log" and hints and logs and all kinds of stuff. I move them all over to the GPSr to do some caching and come back to receive my found caches (on the GPSr you can click "Found" and it will change the icon to an open sign, which is handy for semi-paperless geocaching) but they no longer have all that nice information. Is there a way to keep that info from being stripped or is the GPSr simply not capable to keep all that metadata for each cache?
  3. Seems like these things will probably have an innate ability to grow legs and hop out of the cache when you aren't looking.....
  4. I paid $99 shipped on ebay for a factory refurb Venture HC...he still has many many more available if you would like the seller's name.
  5. I suppose, but would the route be usable on my Garmin Venture HC? When I make them in EasyGPS I can go to Routes on the GPSr and go from cache to cache in a pre-determined order via the route itself. I see what you're doing now. With my suggestion I don't think you could create a route in Google Maps easily, if at all. I was hoping the answer was yes, that way I could see the actual map without buying ExpertGPS (which I so desperately want, but the ol' lady says it's not in the budget). I wonder if my efforts are futile..I've gone through every menu about 400 times in EasyGPS to try to hide them and there is no such option. I guess I could edit all of them to have no names but like a post said above, how would I know what they were...

  7. Just a thought.......if you want to hide the waypoint name, how will you know what cache you are at? This is what it currently looks like: What I want to do is hide the names so that I can better organize my trips (I'm cutting them into sections, and doing large chunks at a time, while I am in a particular area). I know it would probably be easier to just send them all to the GPS and find the nearest one to me at any given point, but I know I would miss some...so I want assign routes and follow that.
  8. Thank you Keystone, I was pretty unsure about its original placement.
  9. Don't know if this should go in the newb section, or somewhere else...but if I wanted to hide the waypoint names and just show the icons on the EasyGPS map area on the right side, could I do that?
  10. Yes, the - sign messed me up. I did not know that it was supposed to be there for W Thank you for all your help, the lot of you!
  11. I wouldn't say it would be bad taste at all.
  12. I think that is the default on the GPS, right? Here is what wap.geocaching.com asks for: I tried using hddd.ddddd° and hddd°mm.mmm' and hddd°mm'ss.s" and none of them work with the site
  13. How much do you want for it? Any pics? Anything wrong with it?
  14. wap.geocaching.com uses latitude and longitude when searching for caches near you instead of DDº MM.SSS format....is there a way to either set up the Venture HC to use lat/lon or somehow easily convert DMS to lat/lon and vice versa without using a bunch of different sites or apps? (on an iPhone)
  15. A "Large" cache is a 5 gal bucket or something similar, ammo cans are considered "regular" size.
  16. Hello Just my $.02 I did not like using the app over using a regular GPS unit at all....mildly clunky and glitchy (would crash from time to time) and the GPS on an iPhone 3G is less than desirable.....I have heard the iPhone 4 has much better GPS chip than the 3G and 3GS but I have no experience. I bought premium for pocket queries (which are amazing, and for the $30/year it's a must-have feature IMO)
  17. If you put in equal to or greater than you take, you can take the entire contents if you so choose. If the kiddos want to exchange one thing for one thing per kiddo, it is fine
  18. Thanks for all the info I will see about talking to them, although I wouldn't need 50 codes so I might just have to do it the old fashioned way
  19. Hello I have a pretty simplistic question to ask. We have a laser engraver, a rotary engraver and a vinyl cutter (we are a trophy shop). In lieu of buying travel bugs for items or the vinyls for my cars/trucks, is there a way to just buy the # and not have to pay shipping and all that? Or does it have to be an official Travel Bug dog tag? I have seen TBs from seemingly different sources (or maybe they've just changed over the years, I'm uncertain). How do they get their #s to make their bugs? Thanks P.S. - I am not trying to get out of paying for the bugs, I enjoy helping the caching community by buying things so that I can be a contributing factor in the existence of geocaching. I'm just curious as to whether or not I can make my own with trackable numbers from Groundspeak/etc.
  20. Just an update, the pocket queries did just great! We had several good caches and met some fellow cachers along the way. Very fun trip. I have a question or two though. I want to whittle down on the caches that are near me. I want to start at 5 miles around me, then 6, then 7, then so on. I have done a pocket query and it shows 32 caches that I have not found in my 5 mile area. I want to put them all on my GPS and just go down the list pretty much. Would I just create the query, have it sent to my email (which is working great btw) and open it in EasyGPS and then send it to my GPS or what? I bought a new GPS (venture HC) so it should see it (waiting for it to come in the mail). Thanks for everyone's help!
  21. Link is broken, here is the working version http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...%3D1&_rdc=1
  22. Here's an idea. If you want to preselect just some of the 500 caches that the PQ will return-- Pick the ones you want and bookmark them (Make a bookmark list called "My trip" or some such) and then create a new PQ from that bookmark. You can then print a map of just those caches and it will number them for you too. If it is a long trip, you might need to break it into sections, by day, by state, etc. and make a separate bookmark & PQ & map for each section. That is a good idea! It's only 7 hrs each way, not long at all. I just want to find maybe 2-3 along the way (we're actually taking 2 routes, so we can find new ones both times) so that we can get out of the car every few hours to stretch the legs and clear the lungs.
  23. Was he a very new cacher? There have been cases of brand new cachers who think that they find the cache and then have to re-hind it in a new spot. You can contact him by clicking on his name next to his log - That takes you to his profile where you'll find the link "Send Message". MrsB Well after looking at some of his other cache finds it seems he is doing it properly. He has over 600 cache finds and a few of those I have found AFTER him so it is obvious to me that he is not moving or keeping the caches..... I guess it was just coincidence that they were missing. I am however going to go back and try to find them one more time with my loved one and a friend of mine to see if maybe we missed them....although 2 of the 3 should have been super super easy to get (they are located in a parking lot and one under/near a fire hydrant).
  24. Well the Map It icon is exactly what I was looking for......can't believe I missed it the first time!! I edited my last post, regarding someone possibly removing the caches around the town I live near if someone has any insight on that I would be grateful
  25. Firstly let me just say that I was not expecting such a quick response. Thanks very much for taking the time to read and explain! Hello DoubleBent, That is one thing I did not do. I didn't know what it meant so I left them all blank. I guess I should have tried it but I didn't know what to look for. I will definitely do this in just a few minutes. EasyGPS does not have my GPS listed (it is a very old garmin, 310 I believe....it's roughly 10-12 years old). I am not necessarily needing to transfer all these to my GPS immediately. Basically in the end all I want is a map of our route, and a sheet of paper with all the locations (with coords so I can manually add them to my GPS when we are approaching the next cache) along the way (or at least a few of them) so that I can circle them on the map and put a number or something near it so that I know which one is which. Lower-tech than most, but I think it might just work for my application (hopefully). Hi there knowschad, Haha, I do appreciate the time that the developers have spent making these applications. I am an amateur coder myself and I know the frustrations! I don't mean to say that their hard efforts are just random little boxes! I did say to fetch 1000, but if it's easier I will just say 500. Although, as long as the results can be mapped in a program or something, I wouldn't mind downloading them manually I suppose, as long as I do it correctly OK. Did you notice the little MAP IT icon? BTW. You can run as many PQs as you want, but you can only generate coordinates for download 5 times per day. So, go ahead ... Tweak your PQ until it is just what you want. THEN and ONLY THEN, set the day you want it run (probably "today"). If it is under 500 caches, it will send a file to your email. If it is 501 - 1000 caches, it will send a file to your computer (I set mine to the desktop). Once I have the file, I load it into GSAK. From there, I can download it to my GPSr or my Palm Pilot. Another neat thing you can do is look at the GALLERY of your PQ and look for interesting images. Often, this will correspond to an interesting cache search. Hope that helps. Hello there michigansnorkelers, I don't remember seeing a Map It icon, but honestly things escape my mind pretty quick sometimes! GSAK - is there a free version or must you obtain a license? I did find the gallery tool very interesting, and will definitely use it to find the more attractive and exciting caches! Edit: Also, we were doing some geocaching today around town and out of the three we looked for, we could not find any. They were all placed by DrHogg, and his are usually mildly easy to spot/find. We found where we think the caches should have been in each site, but they were missing. On all three spots, the last finder (according to the geocaching log on the site) was the same guy. What I'm wondering is.....what if he is taking the caches (thinking, hey I found a cache, and taking them) instead of signing them and leaving them for others to find? I assume he is not doing it on purpose to maliciously ruin geocaching for everyone else, but is there a way to contact him to ask if he's taking them and not putting them back? Maybe it's just bad luck that muggles have found them, but he found all 3 less than a month ago and all were missing (at least, we couldn't find them, which we normally don't have a problem with, we go with 2-3 people). Again I'm not trying to blame him for anything, I just want to make sure someone's not out there finding caches and keeping them because that's how they think the "game" works.
