  1. NG TOPO! State Series maps are scanned USGS maps. I have paper 1:24000 quads and they are identical to what is on my monitor. They do use the data for the new 3-D effects, but the maps are the real deal. I think it is tremendous, if pricey, software. I use it all the time in planning outdoor activities, including caching.
  2. The National Geographic TOPO! state series maps are fantastic. Version 4.0 with 3-D rendering and flyovers makes it easy to spend a lot of time looking at the areas you have hiked or plan to hike. It does support downoading of waypoints and tracks from your GPSr. I highly recommend this software.
  3. If you can download your waypoints to Mapsource, the number of waypoints will be on the waypoints tab on the left of the screen.
  4. Check out the Mapsource viewer on the Garmin website. Mapsource viewer Correction: After looking more carefully at areas in Pennsylvania that I am familiar with, the background is almost all tan/brown except for scattered green areas that may be State Forests or Gamelands. They weren't labeled, so I can't be sure. It does appear, in PA at least, the primary background color is tan.
  5. Alan2, I am by no means a computer expert, so my way may not be the easiest or the same for everyone! Control Panel/Intel Extreme graphics/information tab/view report I am using a Dell with a P4 processor. You may have a different graphics card. I think if you find the graphics icon under control panel you should be able to navigate to the information you need. -Klatch
  6. NG TOPO! has come out with an expansion pack for $19.95 that includes 3-D imaging and USB connectivity, among other things. I have ordered it but have not yet received it, so no comment on functionality at this time. NG TOPO Expansion Pack
  7. As an alternative, I have purchased cables, cases, and antennas from this site. Very good prices and top quality. This is the retail site for the company that manufactures the items. http://www.gpsgeek.com/
  8. I have used the suction mount with the aluminum arm for a couple of years for mounting my Legend. It works fine, with no vibration. I will also use it for my 76CS when they produce the correct cradle for it. I have no experience with the plastic unit.
  9. This thread has had 1,107 views to date. To me this indicates there are many more people waiting for the ability to pay by credit card.
  10. It's actively being worked on. Thats all we need to know.
  11. No reply to the request for an update on credit card payment for membership, but a quick promise of help for another PayPal problem. Is the credit card option still being pursued?
  12. I just read that the current DOD restrictions on civilian GPS functions are <1000 knots and <60,000 feet to preclude their use in weapons guidance. An excellent source for this kind of information is the sci.geo.satellite-nav newsgroup.
  13. Could we have any update on the progress of paying by credit card directly to Groundspeak?
  14. From the Pennsylvania Hunting and Trapping Digest: It is unlawful to....(3) Shoot across a road unless the line of fire is high enough to preclude any danger to road users; and (4)...
  15. I know you didn't say which morning, but...
  16. I added my home coordinates, look forward to next week. Thanks.
  17. I never entered a home coordinate on my profile page, if that is what you mean. However, direction and distance info was included previously.
  18. I just received my Weekly Cache Notification and although it says "Recent caches in your area..." some of the caches in this report are hundreds of miles away at the other end of the state. Since the direction and distance information is not included anymore, I would need to look at cache pages which I would never seek to find. Any chance you will restore this data to the report? Otherwise I probably will stop receiving it.
  19. There are already caches in four of the five township parks (all but Brookside) and some have been in place for a couple of years. Before you place one you probably should check out the other ones to make sure you don't violate the 0.1 mile rule.
  20. I sent my Legend in almost exactly one year ago for this repair. It was just out of warranty, but they fixed it without charge and the turn around time was quite good. It is now one year later and the gasket is loose again. This is a design flaw with the case plastic and the rubber adhesive and the repair will not be permanent. Just a heads up to anyone considering any of the Etrex models (they are all susceptible to the problem).
  21. Thanks for the suggestions. I am logged in while having the problem, though. I saw a similar thread in the General Forum, thought one of TPTB would see it here and respond. I guess not.
  22. When I access a cache page from the weekly notification email or from Geocaching in Pennsylvania/Latest Caches Hidden and attempt to download the .loc file to EasyGPS it takes me to the page explaining about waypoint downloads. If I access the cache page through a search on Hide and Seek a Cache it works fine and I am able to download to my GPSr. Is this a known problem or something I am doing wrong?
