  1. I suspect that many many of those PQs out there are not being used by the people who set them up, so in many cases the bandwidth is being wasted sending out PQs that the owner created months/years ago but don't need any more. Now GS have decided they're going to increase the number of PQs increasing the bandwith needed even more, so they decided to make it a download link so that people will only download the PQs they actually need, thereby reducing the wasted bandwidth. I suspect they'll see a large decrease in the number of PQs downloaded now. I bet people will just up and stop using the function all together moving to hitting the website from their mobile device's app over and over and over again driving the bandwidth and server CPU usage through the roof.
  2. Why in the heck would I be logged in to the website from my mobile device? I've never had to login before and now there are added steps. This isn't just about change, this is about adding several steps to a workflow that used to take five seconds to complete. Plus, there are places I go where navigating the website would be impossible where an attachment would get through (eventually).
  3. I second this request. Removing this feature is a serious regression. Please bring it back.
  4. Please bring back the attached PQs for <= 500 caches. I really hate having to navigate the website only to pull in information that used to be automatically delivered. This is a clear regression.
  5. It would appear that the Smithsonian Institute has found a friend in caching. The Natural History museum in Washington, DC, has several traditional and Earthcaches. Also the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center on the Rhodes River, off of the Chesapeake Bay, has several caches around it's property.
  6. The aftermarket program GSAK will do that as it is a database of caches. It will also produce the counties maps, by state, that you were asking about in another thread. Sure, except I don't use GSAK (unless they started supporting Linux) and the data is already *there* in the process of computing the maps, all that is needed is to show the information.
  7. Sorry, I misread one of the event locations. All seems well. Please disregard.
  8. I moved recently and updated my home coordinates but I'm still seeing events and such in the email from my old location.
  9. I would like to see an option to show state county maps instead of/in addition to the nationwide map used to show counties where caches were found.
  10. mygeocachingprofile.com creates great maps showing what DeLorme map pages you've completed based on your "My Finds" PQ. It would be nice if there was a way for the website to provide a list of caches that was used to create the map. That would make it easier on the cacher to file their application for successful completion of a state.
  11. I was looking for a few caches along the Appalachian Trail and found this list. The problem is that the list contains caches that have been archived and is probably missing some caches that should be there. I went to contact the list owner about this but he hasn't logged in since 2007 and he never confirmed his email address so I cannot send him a message. Is there anyway to adopt the three lists that he created so I can update them?
  12. I use it when I'm out on a cache run... It is a great tool and allows Madana to log her caches behind me when she gets back home.
  13. A friend of mine has YLWJPTB (or something like that) as her license plate. And yes, the plate is on a Yellow Jeep that is a travel bug.
  14. To verify that you found the cache you must physically log the cache otherwise there is no proof.
  15. But, if I load bad data into my Palm or GPSr because I can't have correct data available the way I want it, and go caching and then can't find what I was looking for. Come home and find that they were archived. I'm going to be unhappy, not with the cache hider, but with geocaching.com for not allowing me to have the information in a usable fashion. Basically I'm the end user. A paying end user. And, my wishes need to be at least addressed. I agree with you. It would be a lot better to have direct access to the GC database so you could synchronize directly with the "master" database to create your own smaller version for your area (or where you are going caching). Unfortunately it appears that Groundspeak is more interested in the bottom line than their product. Too bad they have a monopoly on the "sport" (or at least on the data of which truly belongs to the users).
  16. FTF means that you were the first to find the cache without following a geotrail left by the previous cachers and that you are just plain good! I personally challenge myself to get all the FTFs I can. And yes, it is all about the numbers.
  17. Keep the truck running and your Geocaching bag (with flashlight) at the ready.
  18. Portable Ham Radio Magnet on a stick
  19. Yeah, that is about how it works around here, too. Of course we think it is weird when people wait for us to find it. If we are around and scratching our heads... come and join us!
  20. A good Geocaching friend of mine (Hunster) usually hides the WORST Geocaches! Not that they are bad they are just extremely difficult. He never gives any hints or otherwise changes the cache until someone has found it. Trust me, as much as he usually finds you looking for his latest only to sit back and laugh at you there are quite a few people that will drive from mile around to try to show him up. It's all in good fun, though. Personally, I've adopted a similar rational. I'll post a hide and won't give anyone any hints until someone has found it at least once.
  21. I'm having the same problem. If the list would show the date of the event then it would be a lot more helpful. It might be a good idea to add a field in the database for "time" (based on UTC) that way the time for the event could be included in the cache. Maybe a timezone field would be available per cacher so the time would be correct always.
  22. Here's another story that I found on Computer World... A little different than the first.
  23. Just as a thought to help the performance of the system (since there is a redesign going on) is to support direct entry of finds into the database. I'm not saying to allow uncontrolled access to the database but if programs, like GSAK, can upload finds much in the same way that we dump Pocket Queries into it then users won't have to load a web page for each log as the logging will be done offline and then uploaded and processed at the server's convenience. I'm sure users would like better integration between their paperless solutions and the Geocaching.com database. Thanks for all the work that you have done to work on this problem. Eric KF4OTN
  24. You know, I thought about that because when I log using my BlackBerry I sometimes get duplicate logs. I'm usually pretty good about weeding those out. I could see one or two getting in there but not five. I don't know. Maybe. Is there a good way of checking for dups?
