  1. I would second the nomination for "Cache Of The Faithful" and would like to add my own personal favorites: "A Birch To Find" (GCMX6C) by Team Kryptos "Nuts About Caching" (GCR3MX) by Team Kryptos Have fun and we hope you enjoy your time in Omaha!!
  2. Thank you so much for the information! I really appreciate it!
  3. I have seen several profile pages that include a "States I have found caches in:" map. The graphic is a map of the United States with the States colored in in different colors. Would someone be so kind as to provide a link to where one could create their own map to use on the profile page? Thanking you in advance!
  4. Ok, I may not be explaining this correctly. I DO get the e-mails sent to the e-mail address associated with my geocaching.com account in regards to my TB's and also the weekly update on new caches in my area. What I am talking about are the new 'Instant Notifications' that you can set up via your account page. This feature allows you to select an alternate address (such as a pager or text-enabled cell phone) and gives you the ability to be sent an instant notification for new caches that are placed in your area. Obviously this is great for those FTF hounds out there. I would like to suggest adding the option of getting an instant notification whenever one of my TB's move in or out of a cache. This way I don't have to wait to get access to a PC in order to keep 'tabs' on my TB's. For those wondering where to find this feature, if you go to your 'My Account' page if you look off to the right you'll find a link to 'Set Up Notifications'. This takes you to the screen where you can set your alternative address and choose the types of caches you'd like to be instantly notified about. I hope that made things clearer than mud...? Anyway, that's what I wanted the opinion on.....the adding of that feature to the notification options already in place.... Thanks and Happy Caching!
  5. I am relatively new to geocaching but I have been bitten HARD by the TB bug. I have five of my own sitting in caches and I check the site everyday to see if they've moved. What I'm wondering is, if the instant notification feature can be set up to notify you of new caches in your area, could they possibly also be set up to let you know when someone picks up or drops off a TB or Geocoin that you own? Or perhaps one you're watching? I would love to be able to get a page (or text message) anytime someone logged one of my TB's in or out of a cache. Any thoughts or opinions on this idea would be appreciated. Do you think this would be a useful feature, or not? Thanks and Happy Caching!
  6. I think mine is pretty self evident for any self repsecting Star Trek fan...hehe! As a kid growing up with the Original Series of Star Trek it didn't take me long to realize that if the show started out with two security guys in red shirts exploring an unknown planet it wouldn't be long before one of them bit it and I'd get to here ol' "Bones" McCoy say that famous line, "He's dead, Jim!". Cracked me up everytime.... Live Long and Prosper.....!
  7. Yeah but instead of being the DM you'll be the CM (Cache Master)...hehehe! I too, played WAY too much D&D when I was a LOT, LOT younger than I am now but I can remember the fun we had. The idea sounds great and with a half-way decent story line to go along with the 'treasure map' and the treasure hunt itself it could prove to be VERY interesting indeed! Heck, before you know it you'll be marketing CM Modules for different adventures/different 'levels' of playing (increasing terrain/cache difficulty) and creating coveted 'golden' travel bugs to place in the caches. -- Man a guy COULD really come up with some great stuff...combination caches, micros, traditionals, puzzle caches...all linked to the overall mission/adventure. It would be great for team caching! -- I say go for it and keep us posted as to how it goes!
  8. Thank you all for your information! I'm a little leery about doing the hard reset on the unit. After reading everyone's responses, I think I'll just keep WAAS enabled and let it do it's thing (when it can)...I live in Nebraska and perhaps my view of the South isn't as good. I appreciate all of your help. -- Happy caching all!
  9. I recently purchased my Garmin GPSMAP 60CS and was anxious to get it "up and running". I was reading the directions on starting up and getting the satellite locks and when I went outside to power it up for the 1st time I only let it sit for about 15 minutes or so until it started giving me coordinates. I then powered the unit off and called it good. I realized the next day that I hadn't switched WAAS on before allowing it to get the satellite lock. I read in one of the posts on the forum (I can't find it now) that the GPS should be allowed to 'bake' for at least 45 minutes or more in order for the unit to get a lock on a WAAS satellite (I want to say it was supposed to be a satellite numbered higher than 32(?) ) and that a lower case letter 'd' was supposed to show up below the satellite bars on the GPS. I can tell you that I have since switched on WAAS but I haven't had any luck getting the unit to pick up a satellite numbered higher than 32 and I don't have any satellite bars with a lowercase letter 'd' beneath it. I want my GPS to be as accurate as possible so my question is this. Is there any way to 'reset' the Garmin GPSMAP 60CS so that it finds the higher numbered WAAS satellites when I power it up and allow it to 'bake' for the 45 minute recommended time? The unit currently says the accuracy is is between 20'-30'. If I can get more accurate that would be great. If someone has the magic recipe, could you pass it along to a newb? I'd appreciate it. - Thanks!
  10. Thanks for the information and for the link to the thread! I can see that micros remain somewhat controversial in the GC world and I appreciate the thoughts and opinions expressed here. I'll make sure to take those considerations in mind when I do eventually make my first "hide". Thanks again!!!
  11. Is there anyplace to purchase (or ideas on how to make) microcontainers that are in different shapes to make them more fun to hide? I'm thinking that a microcontainer that is shaped like an apple or a pinecone would be a lot more fun to find than a metal cylinder or film cannister hanging from a treebranch. If anyone has any links or information, I'd love to hear from you. Also if anyone has any cool suggestions for micro container shapes or ideas for camouflaging them, please share. Thanks!
  12. Thanks! -- Good luck boldly going where no one has gone before...! Heheh!
  13. Awesome guys, thanks! -- I'll check out the websites you all mentioned and thanks again for the information. I like the idea of putting a magnet on the top for the micros.... Appreciate your help once again!!!
  14. Another easy one. If you grew up with Star Trek (The Original Series) then you've probably heard Dr. Leonard "Bones" McCoy look to Captain Kirk (usually while leaning over the corpse of some red-shirted security officer (NEVER wear a red shirt on Star Trek...DUH!)) and saying in his ever dramatic way, "He's dead, Jim!" I've loved that line since I was a kid (along with MANY other Star Trek lines..."Dammit Jim, I'm a doctor, not a bricklayer!")...you get the point... Live long and prosper....
  15. Hi all! I've been hearing a lot on the forum about people buying walking sticks for when they geocache. I was wondering if anyone had a favorite style or recommendation on features or could recommend a particular brand? I'd love to hear some suggestions and get some info. Thanks again!
  16. I'm sitting at about 285 and have just started geocaching. I'm hoping that this new "obsession" of mine will perhaps help me trim down a bit. I know it's doing wonders for my mental health (however I do DREAM about geocaching now and I'm not sure how that's affecting my sleep........if I wake up in my underwear in the middle of the street with my GPS in hand...weeeelll.......that'd be another post...). I figure that I'm at least getting off the couch and outside for some geo-exercise and that can't be bad for me at all.
  17. I'm 41....will be 42 in September....wife is 40....daughter 7....son 5 1/2. I'd say you're only as young as you feel and so most days that puts me over 50......heheh! Seriously, regardless of what the average age comes out to be, I feel that this is a sport that anyone can enjoy no matter how young or old they may be. And that's just ONE MORE reason why I love this gig....
  18. I like the new design...and the new wording.... When will the new design be official and ready for ordering?
  19. Thanks for the additional info. It's nice that you have the option of just loading your area (as opposed to the whole state). From what you've said it sounds like I'll be able to get the entire Eastern side of Nebraska plus the Western side of Iowa loaded without any problems and still have some "space" left over. Cool. -- Very Cool. Thanks!
  20. Well, since we're on the topic of map software...just how much memory does it take to load, let's just say the state of Nebraska, into the GPS? 10 MB? 20? 30? I know the unit has like 50 plus MB of built in memory. Could I load three states worth of Citymaps into it (ie. NE, IA, MO) or would I have to select just certain regions in the state? Just trying to get a feel for what to expect... Thanks! Steve
  21. Yeah, Nebraska as a whole is pretty darn flat. No mountains or major hills or anything. The Topo map will probably come more in handy for when I travel. But you're right about the City map...that WILL come in handy! Thanks! Steve
  22. You need to go to the geocaching.com home page.....from there go to "My Account".....then choose to "Edit Profile".....scroll down to the "Profile Details" section and find "Select or Choose Avatar"....from there you'll be given the option to upload your image. Once your image is uploaded you'll need to return to the "Profile Details" screen and select your uploaded image and activate it. I hope that helps get you on the right track.... Blessings, Steve
  23. Thanks Zinger! -- I'll pick up the City Select software AND the Topo as well. I want to be able to take full advantage of the features to get the most out of my experiences. With the forum access, you guys have been a great source of information and resources. Thanks so much for responding and sharing your experiences with the 60CS. I'm looking forward to having those same experiences! Blessings, Steve
  24. Awesome! Thanks for the additional info regarding the map software (a question I can probably now avoid asking!)... ****reaches for credit card....***** Blessings, Steve
  25. Wonderful! I appreciate everyone's response. It sounds like I really can't go wrong in choosing the 60CS for geocaching and so that is what I will be going with. Thank you, thank you, everyone for your help! I can't wait to post my FIRST find and let you all know how it went! Whoo Hoo! ***feels the power of OBSESSION setting in**** Blessings, Steve
