  1. My pet peeve is traipsing through dog poop. A lot of pet owners have claimed ownership to so many beautiful inner city parks and trails but many fail to do the necessary cleanup. I've seen plastic baggies tied to tree branches, to fences or just tossed to the side. And, too often, Rover just does his thing wherever he wants and no one cleans it up.
  2. Sounds like you did the right thing. I recently found a cache that had a completely full log. I had no paper to start a new one so I used tiny little letters in the tiniest of space. I logged the cache as found and immediately added a note about the full log which the owner has seen and has attended to. I'm a birder as well and I refuse to mark down a specie that I'm not 100% sure of but I've witnessed many others who will make a positive ID from a "glimpse of red" or a "flash of white". People who claim to find caches but don't, are only fooling themselves and I don't let it bother me. I'm only really interested in what I find.
  3. Was about to say the same thing. Gas here is around €1.5 per litre which is $7.8505655 per gallon. Luckely my car does 33.6020833 miles per gallon Gas is mostly Taxes here, it's ridiculous We're at $1.21 per litre here in Toronto, Canada. I cache like I shop, "around the horn". Starting at the farthest and working back to the closest and, finally, home.

  5. It surprises me that your parents aren't interested in getting out of the house with you and enjoying a day on the trails. Most parents can't seem to get their kids away from their computer games, cell phones or Facebook. Good for you! Don't become disillusioned. Maintain your interest in this great pastime and continue to remind your parents of it's healthy virtues and they'll eventually come around. By the way, my 34 year old son (I'm 62) still says "geek alert" when I talk about geocaching but I really regret having not discovered this wonderful activity many years ago.
  6. If you have Windows 7 or Vista, click on start, all programs, accessories, snipping tool. You can drag the cursor around the entire map on geocaching.com or on a part of it. Save it to desktop (as I often do) and print it from there.
  7. Thanks for all your input and suggestions on the 62s compass calibration problem I posted. Garmin has since replaced the unit.
  8. Now that we're talking about bad ideas, I'm still seeing recently published caches located in cemeteries. One such cache, near me, is not 40 feet from the front doors of the cemetery administration office. Wanting to be the FTF, I got a really nasty look from an employee showing and discussing plots to grieving family members. Now I'm starting to see signs put up at some cemeteries advising geocachers to keep out.
  9. I'll be vacationing in Varadero, Cuba next month and I had hoped to visit all the caches in that area. It is true that cache owners need to be responsible for their hides but couldn't we standardize "vacation" caches? For example: micro with log only. So the fun of locating a cache in a foreign country is realized but maintenance and pollution is kept to a bare minimum. I've added extra log paper more than once to caches I've found locally. If a "vacation" log becomes too big for the micro, I'm sure the one who replaces it wouldn't mind taking a photo of the original and e-mailing it to the owner. Simple maintenance for these types of caches could then be the responsibility of the finder.
  10. Exactly how accurate must the coordinates be when hiding a geocache? Is being **.001' or **.002' off on the lat. or long. okay? Sometimes, either one of my two GPSr's don't give me the same reading twice. I've had some geocachers tell me my co-ords for a specific cache are spot on while others say either latitude or longitude is incorrect. What's the rule-of-thumb? Thank you. Regards.
  11. Has anyone been having difficulty calibrating the compass on the Garmin GPSMAP 62s? It's a three stage calibration consisting of turning, rolling, and flipping in that order but my problem is that I can't begin stage one without an error message popping up saying "calibration failed retry". I'll go through this several times until finally it let's me get in to start stage one. I contacted Garmin support (the unit is less than a month old) and they recommended a "hard re-set", which I did but the problem remains. I really don't want to send it back to Garmin as I live in Canada where we don't have a service centre that will replace a new unit under warranty with a new unit from Garmin. In other words, I would have to send it to Garmin in the U.S. and pay duty of 13% on the FULL LIST suggested retail price, making the deal I got ($399.00) no deal at all, not to mention shipping costs BTW. Thank you. Regards.
  12. Newbie from Toronto. I'm a senior and I sure enjoy getting out and discovering what's hidden at GZ.
  13. GSAK is an application for Windows. Since this stops a bunch of people immediately thought I'd mention it first. A comprehensive discussion of GSAK is way beyond my ability. But to get started, download it from http://gsak.net and feed your GPX to it. This is the link to the POI macro. It includes some instructions: http://gsak.net/board/index.php?showtopic=8932 You always want the latest and greatest version of the macro, which for now is version 1.23. But you should read the earlier posts as they include instructions. Link to latest : http://gsak.net/board/index.php?showtopic=...amp;#entry81818 Thank you for your speedy and helpful reply.
  14. Would you be kind enough to explain the process of installing the GSAK and the macro mentioned onto my 60CSx? Thank you.
  15. I use the 60Cx and the 60CSx and I'm really pleased with both of them. For locating caches, I tend to focus more on the "distance to next" box on the compass page. When that number is counting down, I know I'm getting close. With either one of these devices, I've been literally a foot or two away from GZ. I'm still a newbie but I've really come to depend on the incredible accuracy of of the 60 series handhelds. I also have WAAS enabled on both units.
