  1. I haven't been doing this that long, but agree with the others. I only use the GPSr to store the waypoints so as I travel I know one is coming up. I then look up the PID on my PDA or laptop or printouts if I am only looking for a few. As far as using the GPSr to find them, it is really an optional tool - not a necessity. As PB stated - I find a measuring tape, prod, garden trowel, camera, and metal detector more valuable. I have found that it is good to take copious notes when you find them (or not) because it is easy to mix them all up when you get back home and go to log them on GC (as I did on MF0209). Brendan
  2. I realize that 60-70 yrs ago $250 was a large amount, but today, it would seem trivial to rip a benchmark out if it is in the way since if fined, it would only add $250 to the construction cost - probably far less than the cost to reset. Am I correct in my assumption? Brendan
  3. I was out at this one today and was wondering if the pipe could be part of the BM or am I jumping to a conclusion? http://www.geocaching.com/mark/details.aspx?PID=MF0171 Thanks, Brendan
  4. I created my poker from an old mini golf putter. I put the business end in a grinder and it came out like this: http://www.sheehys.com/mopar/P0007357.JPG http://www.sheehys.com/mopar/P0007362.JPG It is not as sharp as it appears - I rounded the tip off for safety. Brendan
  5. I finally got out there and it wasn't there. A farmer from across the road came over and asked me if I was looking for the 'survey thing'. He said the owner of this particular farm always ripped them out; probably wears a tinfoil hat, too. Wound up chatting with the guy for about 15 minutes. I forgot to bring the bicknell flyers wih me to hand out. Brendan
  6. Did you mean to post this on the 'espionage' board? These are all good suggestions. In the IT world we call this this type of hacking 'social engineering'. Brendan
  7. I think am getting the hang of this now. I didn't get out there today, but I read the station, LB1993, references. If I face north and go 15.472 meters, 3 degrees left, I should be right on top of it. Brendan
  8. Thanks! We started geocaching last season and just started benchmark hunting this year. I intrigued me since I used to work for the county recorder's office as a cartographer drawing plat maps, writing legal descriptions, and such.
  9. Thanks. I wouldn't have thought it was a typo with a mention in several datasheets but it makes sense that it is only 3 inches. I am going out Sunday to have another look for it among others. Brendan
  10. What would a 3 foot aluminum mark be? Rod? Disk? LB1993' LB1993'RM 3 IS A 3 FT ALUMINUM MARK. IT IS 45 FT N OF THE METAL WITNESS POST LB1993'AND 21 FT N OF THE CENTERLINE OF THE ROAD. IT PROJECTS 2 INCHES AND LB1993'STAMPED BROWN 1959 NO 3 1979. LB1993' Thanks, Brendan
  11. Now that is a wealth of information. Thanks to all. Brendan
  12. What does this mean - HEIGHT OF LIGHT ABOVE STATION MARK n METER(S)? Thanks Brendan
  13. It's similar to computer tech support - assume the end user is an idiot and verify that the computer is actually plugged in, turned on, etc.
  14. Thanks for the responses. Should I change the gc.com log to not found with an explanation? How do I go about logging with the NGS? Thanks
  15. Hi. I logged my first bechmark today - an easy visual one. ME3156 I logged it as destoyed but was wondering if it truly is destroyed. They removed the tops from the towers a few months ago. The description mentions the top of the tower. I'll delete my log if I am in error. Thanks, Brendan
