  1. Thank you Speakers Corner, I have already downloaded them, but I think I need un unlock code of such. When I put the unzipped data on a micro SD card in my Oregon 450, it did not work. Maybe I ve done something wrong. Like I said, I am a first-tryer...
  2. Thank You Martybartfast, for your fast answer. I already looked at that website/link, but it seemed to be not a very detailed map. But I am but a newcomer in geocachingland, esp when it comes down to downloading free maps. We purchased the maps for the UK/Ireland, Benelux and Germany. But since we will only go to Dubrovnik for 10 days it seems a waste of a lot of money to buy maps over 150 Euros. But if you say those maps are detailed enough to use for geocaching, we will use them. Thank you again
  3. Next year in the summerholidays we decided to go to Dubrovnik. There are some geocaches around and it would be fun to log a couple. Bosnia Herzegovina is just around the corner as is Kosovo. I read in previous messages that it might be possible to download those maps free. I have tried to find these downloads for free topomaps of Croatia, Bosnia en Kosovo, but I can't find any proper links where I can download those maps. Can anyone help me? Thank you
  4. maybe the discussions on this matter that we had can help you as well? http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=312241&st=0&p=5265312&hl=oregon%20450&fromsearch=1entry5265312
  5. Thank you all for all the anwers, because for the first time when we were in France IT WORKED! Finally the Oregon is rather precise. We will keep our Etrex Vista H working with the Oregon, together they are a good team. Thanks again!
  6. Unfortunately I have to call in your help again. I have calibrated the compass today, put routing on hiking, direct routing and not lock on road. We have a geocache about 40 metres away from our home, so I decided to give it a go. The Etrex Vista H pointed me straight to zero, whereas the Oregon had other things on it s mind: first it swiffled round and gave point zero about 20 meters from the geocache. I think there are still settings I might not have tackled yet. I hope you can help me (again)?
  7. Thank you Larry, yes the routing was set on "lock on road". All your answers so far I have printed, to take along on my holidays. I really hope that with all your advices, the problem will be solved. If anyone has more ideas, please let us know. We are very gratefull!
  8. Thank you Insig, that is something definately worth trying! This makes sense. Hope it works when we go on holiday!
  9. Thank you Gitchee Gummee, my thoughts exactly. I will try your idea of firmware updates later. And hiking mode is a solid suggestion too, but I hope the Oregon wont send us on unpaved roads on our way to the cacheparking
  10. Those units should track at least as well as the older Vista. Have you checked the Garmin website for firmware update downloads? Sometimes, even a newly purchased unit when it gets to the hands of a consumer has a firmware update already available. Just had another thought: Make sure the unit is set on "hiking" mode, and not routing (highway).
  11. Thank you for your considerate anwers, however calibrating is not the problem. And Cardinal Red, I do not expect to be a top geocacher whatsoever. It s only a hobby not a job. But my problem is that our Etrex Vista H, puts us normally right down on point zero, where first the Dakota 20 and now the Oregon 450 has a problem even coming close. I probably dont have the right settings. I would like to show on the map or the compass an indication how far it is to the geocache I chose. Distance to destination I tried that, but this is very imprecise. What happens is that the distance in metres stays on for example 30 metres and even if I follow the arrow of the compass, the distance stays the same. (Where the Etrex Vista H, which we follow simultaniously, gives us the correct information). I think I dont have the right settings. But what ARE the right setting? Maybe I expect too much of this device, but shouldnt it perform better? Greetings Corry from team Jerenemas
  12. I had a dakota 20 first and I kept having the same problem: I could not get the compass to be precise enough to direct me in the proximity of the stash. Never to point zero. Luckily I had my old faithfull Etrex Vista H still on hand to help me. That device is very very precise! I thought it was the dakota playing tricks on me, but now that I am the proud owner of an Oregon 450, I keep having the same problem. So it is me and not the device. Can someone help to get the compass to give precise directions to the geocache I chose? Thank you so much! greetings Corry from Jerenemas team
  15. Hello Dear forumwatchers, I think that is since the last update from Garmin that my laptop does not recognize both my GPS's. I have a Etrex Vista H and a Dakota 20. Both do not make contact with the laptop anymore. I have deleted all the Garmin files and uploaded all the latest Garmin download programs (The garmin communicator plugin, the USB driver and the latest webupdater. I use IE 9.0, whatever I try, the GPS's go unnoticed by the laptop. Does anyone know what to do? I have bought a new USB cable to be sure that that is allright
  19. Yes I did, I always do, but normally (or perhaps previously) the PQ's would stay for a week before disappearing. But now they seem to disappear after 24 hours?
  20. Is it me or is this a structural problem???? I ran a couple of PQ's last week and yesterday. When I wanted to download them to GSAK, the PQ have vanished from the list. I thought they were there for 7 days. It is very annoying. Even more since geocaching.com site is going offline tonight, when I would have time to create some more and download them straight away.
  21. I only download PQ's with up to 650 geocaches at the time. This way we always have the full 1000 PQ in the GPS. Hope this helps
