  3. Any cache with a terrain rating of 1 should be wheelchair accessable, and any cache with a terrain rating of 1.5 should be able to be completed by someone who is using crutches. Check out the webcam caches there may be one in your area. - Lone Rangers
  4. Using the cache rating system it would be at least a ?/3 cache. - Lone Rangers

    personal travel bug

quote: I get worried about seeing hundreds of caches listed with a travel bug at them and in fact that not be the case. I know this is a little off topic and I am NOT posting this to slam the person who wrote the post. I'm only quoting it as an example (one of many). There is still confustion about how TBs work. I know I was confused until I actualy set up my own TBs and could play with the system a little to see exactaly what happens. Only thing, I really dont know how I would change the TBs to make them more intuitive. Sorry Jeremy - Lone Rangers

  7. Its even worse in Europe. They do it one week before the states does it. So not only do I have to deal with a time change I also have to deal with the fact that the states hasn't yet. Thankfully, most people I deal with use UTC. I've been told why we have daylight savings but it sounds very out of date to me. I mean come on if you depend on daylight then why can you just adjust the time you do things. - Lone Rangers
  8. The idea sounds good but how would an inactive account be handled? Most caches can last months without the owner checking up on it. Would the cache be archive or just have a warning that the cache owner is no longer active. Also what would you suggest happen to the inactive cachers account. I'm asking because I've had to stop using hotmail because of their, nasty little, deleating of inactive account feature. I can deploy for 6, 9 or more months at a time without being able to access the internet for the entire time. I'd hate to have to sign up for a new geocaching account every time I came back off deployment. - Lone Rangers
  9. quote:Originally posted by Gliderguy: I would actually like to see a graph on geocaching "activity" I arbitrarily define "activity" as a cache found, searched for but not found, or hidden. Other logs could be counted if an actual trip was made to the cache site- a maintenance run by the cache owner, for example. This activity number will grow as a function of the number of active cachers instead of the number of hidden caches. The number of hidden caches will indirectly affect the activity as people exhaust the supply of easy to reach caches and their rate goes down. Even average number of caches found per month per cacher might be an interesting number to track. Even if the rate of caches planted has gone linear the activity could still be exponential at this point. A stat page would be cool and I'm sure its in the works. - Lone Rangers
  10. quote:Originally posted by Jamie Z: BP, The cache hider designed the cache so that a person would (normally) have to visit three sites, but instead of going to one of them, I sat in front of my computer and used my head and Excel to figure out where the final cache was. It's scarily similar to someone using the web to find the info necessary to log a virtual. In any case, I retro-actively went to second leg location just to check it out. I'm not a big fan of virtuals that can be logged from home, so I was a bit hesitant to use my Excel method to figure the coords for the final cache, but after discussion with the owner, I decided it was acceptable. Jamie Sometimes a cache owner can miss the fact that what they using to verify that someone has actually visited the site is able to be found through an internet search. For example a cache that I made is located here in Sicily and it has to be a virtual. I did a quick search using google for the information that I was asking for. The names on the memorial. I didn't come up with anything so I thought it was safe to ask. The cache reviewer also did a search but he used some of the text from the memorial and found some web pages with pictures of the memorial and you can clearly see the names. Also if I the same search was done at Yahoo it wouldn't return anything. My suggestion to anyone placing a virtual cache. Do a search at a place like www.dogpile.com that searches multiple search engines and search on many different terms in many different ways. If you still can't find the info your looking for then your virtcache answers are safe. At least for a little while. - Lone Rangers

    GC Waypoint Naming

quote:Originally posted by mrcpu: I believe what Jeremy is planning to do is to move from Base 16 to Base 26. (Our current cache id's go from GC0000 to GCFFFF. The simplest idea would be to go from GC0000 to GCZZZZ.) There are 2 "problems" with this. The first is that newer caches would no longer be sequential which means Jeremy would have an extra step (that he may already do) to verify a name isn't used before creating the cache. The second problem is for all you scripters out there. I believe that almost every program on the face of the earth has a hex2dec function but a "base26 to dec" function would need to be hand rolled. Rob Mobile Cache Command http://img.Groundspeak.com/user/4525_1300.gif And dont forget that 4 letter words will show up as cache names if checking for this is not done. I know if I ever got a cache ID of GCF?CK or GCSH-T I would archive it and start again, but I know some wouldn't and that would take some of the family friendliness away from the site. - Lone Rangers

  13. quote:Originally posted by keknj: Being is DC is cool, there are a lot of places to see/do. You are only about 5 hours from NY, Baltimore is right there, Philadelphis is about 3 hours away. I'm sure there is a lot more that I don't know about. In DC itself there are lots of things. All the capital stuff plus the Smithsonian. I love to go there, but I have a hard time getting past the Air and Space museum. ApK stops there and it takes me nagging all day to go see something else!! There's also the mint, and oh, bunches of stuff!! Good luck!! keknj There are a lot of stuff to do outdoors and away from the cities too. The ocean is only a few hours away and can be a nice day trip. You have the bay and lot of rivers where you can do everything from white water rafting to tubing. In the winter there are ski resorts nearby. - Lone Rangers
  14. quote:Originally posted by rediguana: Hi All. I'm a New Zealand geocacher who has applied for an internship in Washington D.C. with the DC Emergency Management Agency. I'm rather hopeful I'll get one of the positions on offer I should find out around April 22. As I have to start late May, I want to start planning now in case I do get the internship. I would be there for about 4 months from June to Sept if I get one. I've got various questions I was wondering if you could help me with. 1. Where are good places to live around DC, Virginia, Maryland? What sort of things to I need to be wary of looking for accomodation? Apparently the Metro stops quite close to where I would be working so that would probably be my prefered method of transport to DCEMA. 2. I'd _love_ to go geocaching in the US. Anyone willing to let me tag along? 3. I'll be picking up a Lonely Planet guide, but any recommendations on things to see and do 4. Oh, and medical insurance, any advice there? I have no idea where to start! Thanks in advance for your help, I'll be regularly checking in on this board for quite a while I hope! Cheers Gav 1. Are you thinking of buying? If you rent you can always move if you dont like the area. If you are going to buy in the area then I'd suggest renting for at least a year. That way you can get a feel for the different areas. 2. I'm not in the area any more, but hope to return soon. I don't know how things are in New Zealand but if they are anything like they are in Europe then remember do not cross fences. There may not be any no trespassing signs hung but it is implied. Caches in run down looking areas or in old buildings is a very bad idea. Rehide caches well, if not they will be found by a non-cacher and disappear. No food or scented items in American caches, trust me on this one. 3. Too many to list here. 4. Nor do I. Most Americans get their medical insurance through there employer or they sign up with a medical insurance company. Get a yellow pages (business phone directory) and call around. - Lone Rangers

  17. quote:Originally posted by lowbluethunder: It makes several points. First it says "...spent by you in the normal course of everyday life." Clearly, placing a bill in a geocache is NOT spending it. Second it states "Giving bills to friends, relatives and/or associates for the purpose of re-entry into the website violates the whole premise of Where's George?." This would appear to be exactly what is going on when someone places a bill into a geocache. Finally it says "In general, the Where's George definition of natural and geographic circulation is spending your cash in the course of any normal transaction with any unknown person/entity." I stand by my statement that it is wrong to use the serial without the bill in any situation. I also stand by my belief that geocaching is not an appropriate way to circulate wheresgeorge bills. I lurk in the Where's George forums and this very topic has been discussed a length. It is okay to place WG bills in a cache as long as you do not do it with the intention of passing the bill along to friends or trying to control how or where it goes. The point to allow WG bills to "circulate" in caches are these; Money of all types is placed in caches already. You do not know if or when someone is going to take your bill. The person taking the bill is under no obligation to enter the bill. You do not know were the bill will go next (another cache or be spent). Enter 5 bills at WG and place them in 5 different caches = Good Enter 5 bills at WG and place all of them in the same cache with instruction to enter them at WG and then place them back in the cache = Bad - Lone Rangers

  22. Anyone in to opening up your GPSr and messing around with its innards? I've been thinking about finding an old GPSr and seeing what I can do to improve its accuracy. I know that the clock is one factor. What are some other things, circuitry wise, that affect the accuracy of a GPSr? - Lone Rangers

I selected a digital camera (Olympus) that uses AA's just so one size would fit both that and the GPS. Hopefully 24 batteries will last me awhile....... This thread is over a year old. But, I guess it's time to talk about batteries again. Have an Olympus camera and I do the same thing. I'll use AA's in my Olympus (I still have the CR-V3s that came with the camera here somewhere, unopened) until the camera doesn't want to work anymore. The camera has a cut off that will keep it from working on batteries that are too low. So stupid people, like me, don't get all their pictures erased, caused by a bad write, because of low batteries. Then I put them in my MeriGreen. The GPS can run off the "run down" batteries with no problems. - Lone Rangers

  25. My signature item is a 1974 Camaro, but I have yet to find a cache big enough to put it in. So instead I've been thinking about making up some business card CD-Rs. I do not know what I will put on the CD-Rs yet. - Lone Rangers
