  1. I have heard a similar story (here?) with a driver driving through dense fog off a ferry terminal!
  2. Mine has asked me to drive down roads that clearly do not allow you to do so, on the weekend, it asked me to drive through an estate of tower blocks and I got to a big barrier, beyond which was a 'park' or what was now a rubbish dump, with the road continuing the other side of it. Locally to me there is a hospital for the mentally ill, which has a road through it. The road is obvouisly closed, with only foot access through the hospital grounds, but my GPS was convinced my car would fit! The thing is, if a road was changed recently, I would understand, but these roads have been like this for at least 20 years or more, before digital maps were created! My GPS also seems to favour the smallest, narrowest, darkest country lanes as soon as we get out of the cities, even though I have told it I am driving an HGV! The scary thing is, it takes me over weak bridges and under low bridges happily, despite thinking my 3 door Honda Civic is in fact an HGV With regard to unmade roads, I have set mine to avoid such, and so far has done so dutifully. I do get into the biggest dilemmas, though; When driving through an area I do not know to a destination, my GPS sometimes tells me to go in one direction, when the road signs seem to be directing me in another. Do I follow my box of tricks, or do I follow the 'suggested' signposted route? I still feel a sense of panic when signs and GPS don't agree!
  3. Nothing like that has come my way, YET. Maybe it go kicked out by my spam filter...
  4. It's possible that they have made an error while logging the find, changing the date unknowingly or not back dating it when they should. Is their log in the log book, or did the definately not ever find the cache? Seems a little odd to me why anybody would do that, unless they could't bear the though of a DNF or they really want to get their numbers up! I'd say wait a few days to see if you get any response from the e-mail, if no joy, possibly then delete the log...
  5. Well, I have set up a couple of PQs, one for near my home, the other in the Peak District as we are going on a short break up that way on Friday. I got 200+ caches on my PDA now, all local caches, and I hope to receive my e-mail tomorrow with my Peak District caches on it. I will send all the caches to MapSource and Upload them to my GPS. Wow. This seems pretty good, At least I have an excuse to use my PDA again after 3 or 4 years of gathering dust! Thanks again for all the help! G
  6. I bough some a while back at Jessops (camera shops). They did a big pack and it had all different size templates and loads of screen protectors. They are really good, but I found that the picture looks slightly less clear...diffused looking. Congrats on your new GPS I want one!
  7. Oh OK I get now, not being nosy, just got confused by the dual-identity thing!
  8. Good your learning then A big thank you for all your replies, I have spent a little time playing around today. I have a PQ in my email box now, GSAK couldn't read the file as said something about Windows XP corrupting .zip files. I will play around for a bit longer, I may be able to get somewhere with more patience. I thought I was quite good with technical stuff until now...
  9. I think we should all think twice before hitting the 'add reply' button when replying to a thread, to consider how new-comers or potential cachers, or even established cachers might interpret what we are saying. I think we forget it not just the regular posters that we all know and love that read what we write. And to many, our comments here are what they see as the voice and opinion of cachers in general. One or two badly worded posts or 'discussions' could put off a lot of people.
  10. Here is a thread from a few weeks back, it may be of some help to you...
  11. I know there have been some other discussions on this, but I'll be honest, I'm at a bit of a loss! Like many other cachers, I have a GPS (map60c with Topo GB maps) and a bunch of printouts of the caches I am interested in. I have a (rather dusty) Sony Clie PDA with Palm OS 4.1 on it. It would be great to do away with all the printouts, but I don't know how to go paperless. I would love some advice on how to convert, and I would also know how to use the PQ tools, and the waypoint dowload options. Thanks
  12. I told myself I would not get involved, but I can't help it. Geocaching is a FREE sport. Some may wish to pay for the PM, some do not and should not be made to feel they should. With people throwing around remarks about those who do not wish to pay, I am not supprised that there has been a post on another thread from a potential newcomer who is disgusted by the attitude of some of the forumers here. I really am sickened by the way some have expressed their veiws on non PMs. Imagine if every non PM or potential cacher would feel from reading it? They surely would not want to be involved in a hobby that has people who are so disrespectful of others. That would have a far worse impact on the hobby than I care to imagine. And I would like to finish on a thanks to a certain non paying member of this hobby who has contributed so much more than the £17pa fee in sheer number and quality or caches. I hope I have not come accross too negative, I just wanted to voice my oponion on this.
  13. I am sorry to hear you feel that way about some of the members of this community, as I'm sure many of us will be. I have not seen the posts to which you are refering to regarding the premium members 'looking down' on normal members, but I would hope you will not judge us all on the posts of some forumers. In any community, as in this one, there will always be those who have controversial ideas and ethics, that is just part of the wide spectrum of people we have who all enjoy this passtime. If you do decide to be a 'cacher, you do not need to look at or contribute to the forums, if you feel you do not like some people who do use this. But that shouldn't stop you enjoying the pleasure you will get from finding a cache, the walks you will find yourself on, and the places you will get to vist that you would not have ever known of if you weren't there looking for a smalll box somebody has hidden for others to find. Most of us are relatively harmless
  14. Nothing! It does happen, unfortunately. Many owners of coins who release them will deliberately deface the coins proir to release by drilling holes in it or something to make it less attractive to 'collectors'. People who want to collect the physical coins should buy their own, but some choose to steal others' coins from caches
  15. I CITO them whatever the condition, along with any Rubber Gloves No, not the RUBBER GLOVES again!
  16. I found the news in the 'news' section of the official PSP website, and found a few results searching for PSPS and GPS in Google. To be honest I am a big fan of their equipment, I have never used a Sony GPS before, or a PC, but I have phones, mp3 players, high end audio equpment, a PDA and surround system, I can't fault any of it!
  17. I'd try to find a local cache first (an existing one) that is easy to find and safe for youngsters to search for. Finding it before hand will also make it easier to locate should they have difficulty. Maybe set a cache at a later date depending on how people feel about the experience? I don't know if finding a temporary one that you set up just to find will have the same excitement? It does beg the question, how do you get 18 beavers all to feel involved with only one GPSr and one cache?
  18. No it gave Value Added Humour, as you got two jokes for the price of one Oh, is that what it does? I never ealised it before
  19. Joke: I always thought pre-fixing a joke with the word 'joke' kinda took the humour out of it!
  20. Programmeable Simply Paul. No, it stands for PlayStaion Portable, Sony's handheld gaming/media device.
  21. This relates to the GPS because ultimately, what form the "GPS Software" will take is up to them. If they decide to release an in-car navigation suite for North America and nothing else, then it's tough tits for us in Europe. If they decide it's not worth the money to release software suitable for hiking/geocaching, well then it's tough again, and unlike with a pocket PC, nobody else is able to step up and release for free what Sony is unwilling to release commercially. So, yes, I'm very interested in this too, and will be watching it, but I'm not holding my breath for anything other than in-car satnav. I fear you may be right on that one, I dont expect sony to release OS style mapping any time soon if at all. Even with road mapping it will be a good tool.
  22. LOL, I checked the site out, and, it is exactly what it seems At the bottom half of the page, there seems to be results of an embede search with the criteria seeming to be 'contact' and 'marridge'. Your log from the cache is on that page! I have NO idea why
  23. Being a bit of a gadget freak (much to the annoyance of the 'Kate' part of 'Geo-Kate'!), and I'm sure some of you on here are too, Sony's plan to release a GPS module on the PSP comes as great news to me! Since getting a PSP last year, I have been wondering why on earth Sony has't done something like it already. It seems such an obvious marriage. The PSP has far greater processor power and memory than any GPS unit I can think of. great for fast route calculation and map drawing. The UMD discs the machine uses store up to 1.8GB of data, so think of the quality of maps that could be installed. It has an extremely good rechargable battery life, and a lovely large clear display! possibly the memory stick could be used for saving waypoints, tracks, routes or even cache details. I don't know when the module will be available, nor do I know what kind or maps will be availiabe. I'm thinking they will just be road maps, at least to start off with. This is one accessory I will be watching closely over the coming months...
  24. i think i can beat that, freespirit1402 nets 668 but my 'other' persona i use elsewhere 'dreamthief1402' gets a whopping.....7! im unknown! fab "Geo-Kate" gets 182 results. I wonder if any usernames (ar anyother GC related thing) gets a Google-Whack? From what I've heard, they are very hard to find these days...
