  1. Thanks for all of the suggestions guys but it looks like it's really dead. Nothing suggested worked. I also noticed that the batteries are dead shorting some how and go dead within a couple hours. I took it apart and saw nothing obvious.
  2. I have a friends Gold here to try to resurect it but having no luck. When the power button is pressed it beeps and the screen flashes blue but then nothing. If you keep holding the power button the backlight comes on. Any ideas or should I tell him to start looking for a new unit? Thanks
  3. Does anyone have this patch on their computer that they could send me? The Magellan server is down for "maintainence". Past experience says the server will be down for some time. Thanks
  4. I had this problem in my Meridian while using it on the motorcycle. What I ended up doing to end the problem was a couple stips of 1/8" x 3/8" foam weather stripping to pad the batteries from vibrating.
  5. I've had this also for the past 2 days. I have never seen the gps display them in the past. This morning they were there also.
  6. Okay guys/girls.. I'm about tapped out here. Spent a couple hours with this thing today and the magnetic compass and heading are still crazy. Even sitting still it's jumping around. Just to get this out in the open,, no change in my pockets, no watch, no belt buckle, dirt road (no rebar), no wires above or below, not near the car, not near any structures whatsoever. I dumped the memory and reset defaults twice. What is the bubble for on the calibrate screen? The best I can tell is that tells when you are hilding the unit level. In which caseI have no idea what use that provides.
  7. My shop building is metal but a walked up the road about 300 feet when I calibrated it. Thought this would be far enough, maybe not. I'll try it again down the road in the field and see what happens.
  8. As suggested by Embra I tried that already...all was fine until I recalibrated the compass again.
  9. Thanks again for the input.... well I'm stumped now since my last post I have had a chance to do the full calibration and test it out. Results are not good. Before the calibration the headings were reasonable and after the calibration they are not good. Even after switching the Mag off I am still getting varied headings. I went for a drive to test it out and then took a fairly long walk both with the same results. I remembered reading the Meridian FAQs and something about switching the heading to COG (course over ground) when not using the mag compass, I did this for my walk back and the COG was steady with no unreasonable shifts. I'm not exactly sure what the difference is between Heading and COG. I miss my Gold!!!
  10. Thanks for all the help. Firmware is 5.40 This morning I cleared memory and reset defaults and then reinitialized. It's pouring out and I haven't had a chance to get out away from the building (metal) or car. I did try it out in the car and headings are more reasonable now, only a degree or 2 variance on a straight road instead of the complete insanity I was getting. Just curious,,, what gpsr are you currently using?
  11. Turned off the Mag compass today and the compass has settled down but the heading still seems wrong to me. I'll be driving down a straight road for a couple miles and the heading is just jumping all over. My Gold never did this. I also haven't been able to locate a cache since I started using this unit. I even went to a couple that I already found just to compare and find myself 100's of feet off.
  12. Hmmm... I don't know about that but I never noticed this before. This is a new unit for me while my Gold is down and out so the compass thing is new to me. I'll check that today. Also, do I need to recalibrate the compass everytime I change the batteries? If so this will be a royal pain because this thing eats batteries like they are going out of style.
  13. This afternoon while driving down the highway I switched over to the compass and noticed that it was very erratic. Clear view, 6-7 sats locked. Then I switched to the Nav screen and observed the heading doing the same thing as the compass. I was driving pretty much directly toward the sunset pretty straight but the heading actually even displayed 54degrees at one point. The strange thing is that I was exactly on the map wher I should have been. Any insight here???
  14. Thanks for the replies. The card coming loose seems like a reasonably easy thing to deal with. JAKE-2786.... I think we have met on another forum. Hopefully we can get together for some riding one of these days. Scott aka Boatman
  15. Looks like I'm going to crossover/upgrade from my Magellan Platinum to a 60Csx. Does anybody use the 60Csx on a dual sport motorcycle? The vibrations can get pretty severe at times while trail riding. The Magellan would sometimes cut out even though it was hot wired.
  16. Hmmm... Just realised I posted this in the wrong forum. If a mod wants to move it that would be fine. Thanks.... I finally found it after way too much searching last night and was able to get the update installed. Still couldn't get the gpsr to recognise the Direct Route files until I realised that they were encoded with my old units serial number. Changed the serial number and all is good.
  17. Well I just found out that I need to update the firmware to v5.40 but I can't find it anywhere on the Magellan website... Help!!
  18. I had a Meridian Gold that had a bad accident last week so I purchased a Meridian Platinum to replace it. The problem is that it doesn't recognise Direct Route maps for some reason. It will load all my other files from Topo but not Direct Route. I have version 4.06 firmware which seems to be the latest. Any suggestions??? Thanks
  19. Thanks for the help, I now can have more than one map and switch between them finally. One other thing I am having trouble with is Track files. It seema as though I can only tranfer Track files through the gpsr. If I try to transfer them through the card reader, either the gpsr won't recognise them or the PC. Any thoughts here?? Thanks for the info.
  20. Thanks for the info. I don't remember the file extensions right now. I'll give it a try tomorrow and see what happens and also keep track of my steps. I checked out your site and found lots of good info.
  21. Thanks. I understand the difference between "funtional" and "resident". I have a 512 card in the gpsr so I have plenty of space but it seems like when I upload, it overwrites the previous upload. I can never have more than one file that I can switch back and forth to/from. This when I connect the gpsr directly to the pc. I have tried using a card reader and loading the files directly to the card but the the gpsr doesn't seem to recognise those files at all. They are not visible under "Card Utilities".
  22. Is it possible to have both Topo and Direct Route functional at the same time on the Meridian Gold. Whenever I upload one or the other it seems to "erase" the other. Am I doing something wrong or is it just that way. I have tried loading to the SD card through a card reader but the unit won't recognise the files. Is there a trick to this? Thanks
