  1. I used to have a stamp the read "Team Balders" and on the next line, "Strikes Again" but I've cut off the text for the second line which leaves a space for the date. Very handy on a micro log - usually only takes up 2 lines!
  2. I've just seen this on Geolex (http://geolex.locusprime.net/)... Hula Wave – Some GPS receivers (mostly Magellan units) automatically engage a location averaging function when it detects that the unit is moving slower than a certain speed. To avoid this, the “hula wave” is used. This involves holding the unit to your extreme right, then quickly moving it to your extreme left (or vice-versa). The unit will detect this as movement greater than the prescribed speed limit for averaging, and will temporarily turn averaging off.
  3. I've just tried to access the SirfIII chip in my Maplin sold, Nikkai BT GPS, this time with an XDA II and I get the same problem. I'm starting to think that either the Nikkai has been disabled in some way or it doesn't actually contain the Sirf III chipset.
  4. I've tried this patch and I get an error saying that the program could not communicate with the GPS. Tried numerous baud rates (starting with 38400). I'm using an iPaq Rx4240.
  5. It appears that STATIC NAVIGATION (SN) is enabled. I have tried all the utillities listed here (and many others) this evening but all fail to write the new settings to my BT GPS. The unit is from MAPLINS and is badged NIKKAI. I could do with turning SN off but it appears that this unit (even though it uses the Sirf III chipset) cannot be altered. Any units that can?
  6. Thanks for all the animals (especially the rat) and other assorted toys. Keep up the good work.
  7. I use a Bluetooth GPS with my iPaq PDA running memory map (MM). MM is great with the OS maps and getting your current position right on top of the icon for the waypoint usually get you within a metre of so - time to start searching. I have, in the past, used CacheNav (optional part of Cachemate) and BeeLine. As Muggleb has found, I also found CacheNav and BeeLine pretty useless for homing in on a cache; too much delay - you move all over the place and the needle stays put. I access the GPS directly (no GPS sharing) via Serial Port Protocol (SPP).
  8. You're bang on there. I didn't realised that my membdership had just run out. I have just renewed using the renew annually option so that it won't happen again next year.
  9. Why have we got adverts in the middle of the cache listings?
  10. If you're relying on a mobile phone signal for location you're only going to get an accuracy of around a kilometre. Not a lot of good for pin-pointing a cache.
  11. A log from a new (and yet unfound) cache states... Spent 20 minutes looking before the Police arrived... Full Log Here I was wondering if anyone else has had their collar felt ?
  12. I've heard of the unit but can't quite remember what it is but I'll guess at... VACUUM HARDNESS ?
  13. I'm sure I posted this yesterday but it hasn't appeared so here we go again... Just back from Arran and during my stay managed to get WiFi at Billslands in Brodick on a couple of occassions. Not as many caches bagged as hoped and I got rather poorly and am just about getting over it.
  14. Of the 3 FTFs... 1) one is on Holy Isle - not planning on going across 2) "Arran Industry" - One part of the series has still not been posted!!! 3) "Ogham" - I think that I've cracked that one!!!
  15. There are probably lots of McDonalds on the island, unfortunately there are no McDonalds restaurants.
  16. I'm off to the lovely Isle of Arran shortly and hope to bag a few caches. Does anyone know how I can get on the net to log my finds? Are there any internet cafes or WiFi hotspots? Or is this townie hoping for too much?
  17. I, somehow, managed to lose a Unite for Diabetes TB I had in my keep. How do I remove it from "My Inventory"?
  18. QUOTE(careygang @ Oct 8 2007, 10:46 AM) * I did send a nice email asking for hints back in June about the location of the elusive Coal Just had an e-mail from Jango & Boba Fett stating that COAL had not been published yet. That could explain why no-one has been able to find it and therefore complete the series
  19. Recently, I've been using Memory Map on my Pocket PC with a Bluetooth GPSr. Except for the very well hidden cache (where you need to pinpoint the cache - then I can use my old etrex) the above setup will get you to within a few metres. Sometimes the map is not exactly synchronised but the waypoints are correct so it's just a case of getting the location marker on top of the waypoint - and bingo! I also run CacheMate on the PPC so I can quickly switch between map and description.
