  1. This is why I have a whole bunch of TBs I don't get as sad when they vanish for months at a time or die.
  2. Just checking to see if there might be any new ones out there?
  3. Just wondering if there are currently any event travel tags for sale. Is there a Geowoodstock one for this year?
  4. In my opinion, the biggest drawback to using smartphones for geocaching is the battery situation. If you're out in the woods and it dies, you can't just pop in a new one. Accuracy-wise, I think my iPhone 4 works great. My geocaching partner has a Garmin, and we always end up heading towards the same spot. However, I did just get a DeLorme so I no longer have to worry about being stranded with a dead phone. The Geocaching ap really drains the battery fast.
  5. Thanks! I'll post over there. I think that upgrading my firmware might have been why the geocaches got deleted. I'm not sure why the send to GPS function keeps having that error. Could it have something to do with the Cache Register widget being on my dashboard on my Mac? Can they not function at the same time?
  6. I have a couple questions about my new PN 40. I was able to "send to GPS" without trouble the other day, but now I'm getting an indexing error message at the third stage. Any troubleshooting things I should know? Also, the caches I had sent dissappeared after I changed the batteries. Is there a setting I need to change to make them save to the SD card or something?
  7. Travel bug tags have a better explanation of what to do with them printed on the tag. I attach my own tag with directions when I use one of the prettier tags.
  8. In your TB log, there is a link on the right to upload photos. So once you post the log, then you can add images that you took.
  9. I had that happen last weekend right after I upgraded. I kept going in and out of the ap, and it wouldn't lock. Even rebooting the phone didn't work. Then later that day I tried to go to another geocache, and it was working fine.
  10. Well, I tried rebooting while running the ap, and reinstalling the ap. It still wants me to go to Africa Has anyone figured out a way to downgrade to the previous version? As for the settings you mentioned, is there something I can change that will fix it?
  11. I have an iPhone 4, and am having this bizzare Africa problem. I've restarted my phone a few times and it doesn't fix it. The upgraded ap had been working OK, except for one time when it crashed my phone. When I upgraded to iOS 4.2, the Africa thing happened. When I go to navigate to a geocache, it shows the world and points me to Africa The blue dot and green destination point are in the right places, however. But I can't navigate to the cache. I guess I'll try deleting it and reinstalling.
  12. Do me a favor. If you find one of my bugs, pick it up and move it. Thanks. Jeesh! No need to be snippy. That's just how I play. I mean, it's a bit of a bummer if you saw that there were a couple bugs at a cache site, and then when you get there find that someone right before you took all of them. It would be understandable if people didn't visit it often, but if there are visitors most weekends, the bug is going to move soon.
  13. I actually just did this myself. I had a lighthouse geocoin that needed to go to a lighthouse-related cache. The closest one I could find had trees cut down near the cache, which resulted in some DNFs. Then some other geocachers with a lot of finds started finding it again. I really wanted to put the coin there, so I e-mailed one of the recent finders to ask for a hint as I was unfamiliar with the area, AND I have nowhere near the number of finds the more recent visitors had. After her help though, I decided to go to a different lighthouse, as it sounded like I was going to get poison ivy
  14. I usually go by how active the cache is. If there is more than one traveler and the cache is a busy one, I'll just take one so that someone else can have a chance to move one. If the cache isn't popular, then I would take what's there just to get them moving.
  15. For some reason I can't figure out how to do this. I want to visit a geocache this weekend that is a puzzle one where I need to manually enter the coordinates. Can someone tell me how?
  16. For now, my only use would be geocaching. One thing in the iPhone app that I've used and think is pretty cool is the aerial view. However, it is a big data drain. Is this on the Topo 9 software, or would you need to pay extra to download aerial views? Would that be too much of a pain anyway? With the iPhone it's obviously loading what you want off the internet, but I'm assuming for the DeLorme or Garmin you'd have to find the specific area you want and then load it on. How hard is that to do?
  17. One geocoin I saw was in a hard plastic circular container. The other two I've seen were in what seemed like their original sleeves that they came in, and had a sheet with them about being trackable. I was thinking it might be cool to find a container more like the hard plastic one, but that had a hole somewhere on it so you could loop a keychain through. Does anything like that exist?
  18. Also, if you want to send a trackable one out, are there any coin cases that have a loop on them or something so you can attach a tag explaining that it is a trackable?
  19. Well if you're going to plug those two it's only fair to plug the rest too.... regardless of your affiliation. The simple fact is that those dealers have a large selection in stock. To just repeat a long list of websites does not help the newbie that legitimately wants to know where to start. The other dealers have their own merits and sell unique coins that cannot be found anywhere else. I am not saying that the large dealers are best, but even if I were, would it be any different than talking about my favorite coin? What if a say that the Brahean coin is my favorite? Will you complain that I am not also mentioning all of the other coins out there? That is really helpful. Thanks! I was looking for sites with a big selection that people have good experiences with just to start out.
  20. Hello all! Just looking for some tips on where to start with geocoins. So it looks like if you see one in a thread you like, you can preorder it, and then just those people who preordered get the coins? As for the vendors, what sites have the best collections of currently available for shipment coins? I'd like to pick up a couple, but I'm a bit overwhelmed by all the options. If you could point me in the direction to start, that would be great!
  21. I think maybe coins are more confusing than the TB tags, so inexperienced people mistakenly pocket them. I find in a lot of caches the trackables that are listed are no longer there. A lot of times if you look on the trackable's page, someone will have notified the owner that they did not see their trackable in the cache listed, but then the owner doesn't set it to missing, so the cache looks like it's supposed to have a bunch of trackable items. One thing that might work is to stalk your coin So if it seems like a few people have visited the cache without picking it up, you could ask them if they saw it in there. Then you will have more of an idea of when it went missing, and possibly who might have it.
  22. With the DeLorme Topo 9 software, do you get more maps that you would have to pay extra for with a Garmin?
  23. Yeah, sorry, I'm really not too familiar with the options out there. It seems like price-wise, you can get really good deals on the PN 40. Also, from what I understand, the DeLormes are the only handheld GPS units that have satellite images, road maps, and topos. I've got nothing against Garmins though. It seems like the ones with the same options of the DeLormes are more expensive. I find the old eTrex I borrow hard to use, but I love my Garmin nuvi that I use in my car.
  24. Good idea. I'll ask over there. Thanks for giving it a try! Glad it's not just me.
