  1. Hey, did you ever pass on that coin we gave you for GeoGerms? We appreciated your help with that. Thanks
  2. Aloha, Many of you may know about this whale count, but I thought it was interesting enough to post. You can sign up at NOAA or many different spots on several islands. The last one is March 31st.

  4. We did set up an event on March 21st at Nico's Pier 38. It is a Wednesday. Hopefully it will be convenient for many of you. We've got some trackables on order and will assemble a small cache or 2 depending upon luggage space. Let us know if Nico's changes dinner hours please. PS It's barely above freezing here a bit north of Chicago
  5. Everything you have heard about not leaving valuables in your car is correct. We usually snorkel with a small "fanny pack" drybag big enough for wallet/cellphone. If we are out all day and need to leave some things in the car then we make sure to hide them under the seats & lock the car. The most important thing is not to leave camera bags, backpacks etc. on the seat/dashboard where they are basically an invitation for a break-in. That advice works for well populated areas. When we park at remote trailheads (or places where there is evidence of break-ins) we take everything of value with us and leave the doors unlocked. The thieves are looking for stuff to sell and aren't likely to take your extra towels, t-shirts or other stuff you might not want to take on a hike. Heck they don't even bother taking the "spare change" in the cup holder. As for events, there is also the location where we are hosting an event on 2/29/12, it's not too far from Waikiki and has the advantage of food being available. Happy caching, jrr Thanks jrr for your quick answer and the info on finding favorite points on caches. I ran a query and will use the method in the future. The photo is great. I hope they may still be around in late March. Do you folks request permission to hold events at restaurants like the kaka'ako kitchen? It looks like a busy place.

  7. Thanks for the info GeoGerms. We will look more into the event places you recommend. We figured parking would be an issue. We wouldn't want to dish out dollars for parking either. We have taken some cache info from previous posts and looked at some cacher favorite lists for helpful ideas. We have seen your aloha series but must admit we are lazy with puzzles. We appreciate your time working up the list of caches and passing along your ideas. The kayak earthcache (among many others) looks wonderful. We really enjoy earthcaches. We do have one other question I'm hoping cachers can help us out with. We read so much about not leaving valuables in the car, or your camera on the beach and such. What is your advice when you're out for the day with your gps and then go snorkeling?
  8. Helloha, We're heading to Oahu (for Lat's first time) in late March. We would love input on caching with an emphasis on out of the way places and wildlife viewing. We're in decent physical shape and love the water. We expect to do lots of snorkelling. We'd rather stay away from long, super steep climbs though. We are staying at the Hale Koa and wondered if it might be a good place to hold an event on a weeknight? Or somewhere near that area? Mahalo
  9. Bingo! The cache log will often not match the online logs because some of us don't log finds online, therefore you won't get an email for every sig in the paper lg... or did I misunderstand the question? I'm am talking only about the online logs. Not going to the cache site and reading logs. So, I look at my cache online and there is a log for the 7th. I never received that in email. I check spam and have my cache mails forwarded. I can check in 2 accounts and see I received no email of that log. I saw it happen on the same user. They logged 6 of our caches, but I only got 4 emails. That was in January. Hopefully this makes it clearer
  10. Also use gmail. Usually get logs on our caches every weekend. Only had 2 cache finds on ours on the 7th, but only received 1 email.
  11. I have not been receiving all emails of owner logs. I've been aware of this since mid January. Seems to be intermittent. When looking at my caches, I see finds which were never reported in email. What's going on?
  12. I'd like to be able to add maps. By that I mean add to the existing maps on my gps. If you send maps to the gps, it deletes any existing maps. Primitive. Also I'd like to send POIs of certain types, not every POI included. Everything takes longer on the gps with the new data added.
  13. We've used 2009 for a while now. Don't like it. It is a program with zero options. OK 1 option, send maps. Can't say for sure, but I think the update is all about POIs. I'd rather not have every bank and backyard business on my gps. Garmin has terrible software, it is so primitive. Thanks for listening
  14. Sweet, great to see the winner. Enjoy
  15. Just wanted to leave an update on my experience, since I did end up buying the software for Hat for father's day. Thanks to the input here, I got the right version. City Navigator NT 2008. I also signed up for the myGarmin account at Garmin.com hoping to get the 2009 update easily. We had problems registering the new software at myGarmin since it was not a choice on the dropdown menu. While installing the software, it appeared everything registered fine and they got our life story. Anyway I called there yesterday to try and get a replacement part and the "tech" said she could register the software manually since the website was having issues. They couple it with your registered GPS. Today at myGarmin there was an update available for the 2009 maps. So thanks for the input and I hope this may help someone else.
  16. Great info, thanks for the links. I am surprised I didn't come up with some of this when I searched the forum. I can't really look the package over if purchasing online. I want to be an educated comsumer and buy the correct and latest product. With all this confusion, it makes me wonder if I want to spend any more money with garmin. Thanks for the help
  17. Thank you both for your responses. I followed your thread (roybassist) and found it very helpful in terms of getting the free upgrade to 2009. What I've been looking at is the NT version 8. I forgot to include the version in my initial post. If I look at Garmin's site they do not post a version or year with MapSource City Navigator North America NT Part Number: 010-10816-00 Also they don't show City Navigator 2008 as an option for this gps. Perhaps they do not have it in stock or it is only available now on a preloaded card. So my follow-up questions is, is NT version 8 also known as 2008? Is this the right UPC: 753759061135 I'd like these to be the last maps we buy for a long while Thanks again for the info
  18. Hoping someone can answer this as I've spent hours trying to figure it out. Which Garmin software has newer maps and can be used for routing on map60 CSx Mapsource City Navigator NT or Mapsource City Navigator 2008 Is there any sign the 2009 DVD will be available? We have the older TOPO maps, but should have bought the city version I think. Thanks for any advice
  19. Jeremy i just downloaded the new Mobipocket Creator 4.2, try this site http://www.mobipocket.com/en/DownloadSoft/...loadCreator.asp Hatlat
  20. Now if I can just replace that hideous avatar.......this is a test
  21. Problem solved, get firefox reloaded on my new build. Thanks
  22. I guess I should have reported this as a website bug
  23. In regards to GSAK, I guess we should give it another shot. We tried it when we were newbies and didn't really like. Thanks for the input.
