I believe it remained in the cache past several visitors. When I visited the "Monroe Ridge Micro Challenge," the original $5 prize was still there four or five months after the cache had been placed (two or three visitors); it might still be there. And on the other side of the coin, we remember when "Alluvial Material" was stolen because someone missed out on a monetary prize. (Sorry; I've forgotten the amount, but I think it was $10 or $20.) Yes I would like to think that it would last a while even in NJ. I believe Alluvial contained $20 and then it was stolen. The GA coin cache was most unusual it was completely in plain sight but it was well off trail in a national forest and unlikely to be happened on accidently
  2. What is best? Who knows? Geocaching is fun. It is great NJ has so many caches but how do you define BEST? I don't know. I like a hike and a more natural area to find a cache. (But only one of the Orange and Jungle Green caches comes close to this criteria.) I did two caches in northern Georgia that were great fun and out in the woods. One had a rifle scope as a trinket, never seen that in NJ. And the other had about $10 worth of coins in it. How long would that last in NJ. But I choose to live in NJ and so for me it is best.
  3. It says "posted in error...dont read" Why does everyone keep reading and posting here? Oh, not me too!

    700!!!!!!!!!!

I will save my congratulations until he gets to 1000. Let's see that should be around April or late March.
  5. quote:Originally posted by Markwell:However, if you could take the existing *.LOC files resulting from a pocket query (which has NOTHING to do with a palm), and summarily change the resulting waypoints in the query, then there's little impact on the database, and still get the results you're looking for. That is a good suggestion but still most times I go out to hunt my selection is from online. I pick a cache I am going for then use the nearest feature to list them. Check off ones I want. I agree I could change stuff after download but if all new caches could be created with a distinquishing first character it would be a much easier solution. I don't need more software to frustrate me. Will have to look into Geobuddy. I haven't tried that. I just use the EasyGps.
  6. quote:Originally posted by trippy1976:I don't see a need to change the way cache points are named. Just use your pocket queries and/or do some research and you can find out pretty quickly if a cache is a virtual or not. The reason I want them named with a distinguishing first letter is so when they are downloaded to my GPS. I can tell what the point is. If I am near a TC - traditional cache I may be able to hunt it without any other info. But if it is a VC then I know I need the info from the cache page for sure. I don't own a PDA yet or carry one into the field. If caches were named in new way my GPS would tell me more about nearest caches when I am hunting a specific one that I took printout for.

  8. Last winter was little snow so you may not have any problem with it. BUT You could temporarily disable cache online and then physically remove the cache. Put it back in spring and then undo the disable online. I would also post a note on cache page if you did this. You could leave it and if snow really flies they may continually cover tracks and I think many geocachers would not go out in snow. I doubt I will but then again I am hooked and if the temps are warm who knows? I would not post a note asking for no hunts because many geocachers just download coords and then will hunt without checking page or using old printout. (I have been fooled by old printout many times. Will I ever learn?
  9. Congratulations to Lost Tribe. They found their 100th cache today and kept on going. They found 100 at Walk Along The Wall (a little self promotion here) And then later in the the day also did Binomial Offset (a little more self promotion) plus a few more caches in the Morristown area. It was a pleasure meeting you both back in July. And Jungle green and I enjoyed your virtuals in Summit area.
  10. quote:Originally posted by BassoonPilot:Do some great hikes. See some great sites. Have some fun. These are my primary goals but I will admit to shooting for #100 by my aniversary of finding my first one.
  11. This would bother me from a permission standpoint. In a public park whether cacher asked or not is not to important to me but a cemetery is private property. It also requires respectfulness of the property and those resting there. Also I have heard of crime in cemeteries too so my safety would be another concern. Overall I don't think it would be high on my list of place to put a cache or for that matter take a Travel Bug. We lose to many to the graveyard (virtual) already.
  12. quote:Originally posted by dglidden:Why did we lose the ability to simply say "show me all the caches for a state"? I don't want to have to pick a home city or anything. I just want to see all the caches for a given state. The new search won't let me pull up all the caches for a state, only within 100 miles of a particular city, which sucks. (and only a week after I finally succumbed to my guilt and "donated" the $30...) Can we have the old search back? Please? I like the new page but would like to also still have it the old way too. It is better for looking at the new caches. You can see if they are virtual, multi, or traditional at a glance.
  13. Mine is what I use to sign the logbook and often leave as a trademark in a ziplock bag.
  14. Depending on date/time/location us Northern NJers might venture to the South, too.
  15. Congratulations to both of you. 100 is getting to be very common occurence but it still is a significant achievement and a sign of a seriously hooked geocacher. Hope you enjoy the next 100 as much as the first.
  16. I noticed both these cachers logged in at Binomial Offset and both were at or a little above 100 finds now. Congratulation to both of you! I enjoyed KBer's virtual "One down and 49 to go" today. Neither one leaves their find count on the online logs so can't tell you were they reached their 100 find milestones.
  17. I voted for Royal/Black. But Wish you had Orange/Black. I am orange and like to wear my namesake color.
  18. We skipped the Waffle Houses but we did stop at a Sonic Burger on way back to Atlanta. Must say the large serving of onion rings that came with the Sonic Burger value meal were quite good. I had never been to one before. Neat, having a car hop come out and serve you your fast food. Two value meals for less than $10 was a pretty good deal too.
  19. quote:Originally posted by Da Rebel:Say, is the diner in Flemington with the wonderful cheesecake still in operation? http://img.Groundspeak.com/user/3382_900.gif Flemington has developed quite a bit since then. I seem to remember a diner on the circle but I think it has closed. I will let you know next time I get down that way.
  20. I just thought I would share this adventure because it was great fun. Jungle green and I a year ago discovered a place to hike and stay called the Hike Inn, http://www.hike-inn.com/. We had made reservations for last September but then September 11 occurred and we canceled the trip. Well we rebooked our flight for a year later and discovered geocaching in January. Before leaving NJ for our trip I decided to search for geocaches in the area of the Hike Inn and what did I find a brand new cache called Foote Steps, http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?ID=37793, that looked like it would be on the trail in. We began our hike to the inn after checking in at the Amicola Falls visitor center and began counting down the miles to the inn and the cache. It was a beautiful trail with just the beginning hint of color in the trees. Our anticipation grew as the distance shrank because we knew no on had been to this cache yet when we left NJ and seeing how far a hike it was we thought there was a chance we would be getting to this Georgia cache first. Well we reached the search zone and then found the cache easily. Jungle green had found it and opened it because she has never been first to a cache. (Thanks to BassonPilot!) Well she is going to have to wait because one of the local Georgia cachers had been to it the day before us. Oh well it still made the trip extra special. Also we were staying two nights at the Hike Inn and we saw it was only 1.5 miles to the High Shoals Old Coins Cache, http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?ID=6210. So on our second day we hiked to this cache because although we had hiked in the 5 miles to the inn and wanted to hike up to Springer Mountain we realized we did not have enough energy to hike 8.8 miles round trip. But we had great fun on the 4 miles round trip to the High Shoals cache. Thanks Georgia for providing us with a great caching and hiking vacation. If you want to combine a little caching and hiking I highly reccomend it.
  21. quote:Originally posted by MedicP1: Could that not be done by making it a 'route', with 'parking spot' as the start, as well as waypoints. Then it would download to the Easy/ExpertGPS, and finally our GPSrs as a route with a Geocache ID rather than a waypoint with a Geocache ID. I am still new and don't know if this is feasible. I am not aware of the Geocaching site being able to download a route. It just downloads a single waypoint per cache. If a cache could be made to download a Parking coordinate too then it could be a P #### that matches to the #### of the cache of whatever type. And then when I look at my nearest points I know that first I head to the P to park and then hike to the cache from there.

  23. quote:Originally posted by MedicP1:Can we not just take the hex value of the whole ID "GC1234" there by giving us _8_ values (all present cache types: _G_=general, _K_=benchmarks, _V_=virtual, _L_=letterbox, _M_=multicache, _E_=event, _W_=webcam, _U_=unknown) for the first digit I just want to chime in that some sort of system like this would be great! I have suggested before and seems appropriate again that a P value for parking would be good too if the cache download could also have parking coordinates for those of us who like to provide them to. The P#### would then match to one of the other values and #### to let you know this is where to park for this cache.
