  1. Has anyone ever used NOAA ENC data to make coastal maps for Garmins? They are vector based digital files. I have done some small topo's for a state park and it seemed to work okay. I imagine the process would be pretty similar, but I wanted to find out what issues may have been encountered. Would the compiler programs work for hydrographic data? I would hope standards would be compatible. Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks, Barry
  2. Thanks for the offer of the pin. I look forward to getting it. -Geo Knot
  3. Got a few when I went through the Austin area, plus one I found in Houston a while ago. AW0207 / 1918 / n / n BN0699 / 1956 / n / n BM0582/ 1872 / n / y - An oldest in County! BM0627 / 1911 / n / n - Right next to the above bolt. -Geo Knot
  4. I have a 60cx and live in Galveston, Texas. I have not been able to get any D's even after the software updates. #35 just winks on and off for 5-15 secs and disappears and no other WAAS birds appear in this area. I think this is also true for some other cx/cxs users in the Houston area. There has been some speculation on this forum that you have to be able to pick up some other WAAS birds to be able to get a valid almanac. I would be interested in knowing whether or not the master reset makes any difference for you. Good luck.
  5. It's a theoretical fact. OK - based on the behavior of these units, when you do a hard reset, all data is gone. But if you select a "new location," you'll get a constellation that moves around a bit until the unit finds itself. If there were no baseline almanac, you wouldn't see anything on the satellite screen until a full almanac had been downloaded. So programming in a baseline almanac into the firmware, which is updated periodically, makes cold starts faster. I'm positive that Magellan units have this feature. I don't think that it's stupid, as there's really no downside to doing this, as the new almanac data will quickly overwrite the older data from the firmware. My guess here is that this way of speeding up a cold start doesn't jive with SiRF, and is simply a growing pain. There's probably some sort of error detection/correction that's preventing PRN 35 information from being used, except that the error "detection" prevents the data from being downloaded that provides the correction. Like I said earlier, it's my theory. I'm just trying to understand why my cool new toy won't use correction data at home (W93), but worked fine when I was in NYC and in Europe... I think you are correct. It appears that many with the cx or cxs in the central portion of the US/CA are usually only able to receive signals from WAAS 35. For some reason these units are not getting their almanacs updated from 35 and therefor never get a lock on it. The exception appears to be persons that can also receive from a different WAAS satellite and obtain a good almanac allowing then to get info to lock on 35. Hopefully when all the satellites have been tested and stabilized, the cx units in the central portions of NA will be able to utilize the WAAS corrections. Also, I found this info on WAAS GEO status -BW

  7. Did your hard reset help with the problem getting D's as you mentioned in other posts?
  8. AW0581 / 1936 / N / N AW0582 / 1936 / N / N AW0586 / 1935 / N / N Pre-Easter finds and post-Easter posts....
  9. Forgot to add the device 1. unknown 2. n/a 3. No. 4. 60cx ...and how about 5. Location? Galveston, Texas
  10. I have a GPSMAP 60 Cx 74800437 MY unit scans over 35 for ~5-30 secs and then drops it. My unit often sees 35, but it has never had a lock and shown that differential corrections were taking place. I live in Galveston, Texas
  11. I logged my first benchmarks today. Finally... AW0437 / 1935 / N / N AW0436 / 1913 / N / N AW0592 / 1957 / N / N
  12. Geo - 35 should come online in 30 to 60 days. A couple more are scheduled to come online this fall that we should see here in the central US. Go see if you can find a bench mark close by and take some readings occasionally. When I have had good locks on 8 to 10 sats, I've gotten 5' or better actual accuracy under those conditions without WAAS. Planewood- Thanks for the info. I'll check out some adjusted benchmarks...
  13. I'm out west of Houston. If WAAS corrections are being applied to a particular satellite, then that satellite should have a "D" showing. You might be seeing satellite #35 right now, but it is not broadcasting corrections (I don't think). It will be a few months before it gets going again. For commercial reasons, the owners of 35 wanted to park it at W142°. I have not seen a D on any bar since my 60cx arrived a week+ ago. I have heard scutlebutt here that it may be a software problem which Garmin is working on. I live in Galveston (southeast of Houston) and I haven't gotten any WAAS satellites and never any D's on my 60cx. I wonder if this will change?
  14. I would like a clarification. Is the oldest surviving benchmark elegible for bonus points or does the destruction of the oldest monumented benchmark in the county mean you are just out of luck? Since I live in a county on the Gulf of Mexico, the oldest monumented was destroyed by "erosion." (probably a hurricane)
  15. I'll give it a try too. Gives me an incentive to buy that premium membership.
  16. I noticed that the Garmin site indicates that the 60-series do not have tide prediction capability, while color 76-series units do. see Garmin faq: www.garmin.com/support/faqs/faq.jsp?faq=421&webPage=Mainwebpage Has that changed with the x-series or do they assert that to keep mariners buying the 76 series? I would be interested in knowing whether any 60 cx or cxs owners are able to use tide prediction without problems. Thanks
  17. I own an Etrex yellow and I just bought a 60cx, which is to arrive next week!
