  1. Facebook Link! Here is a video of me and my cousin finding GC32YYE "Give a hoot geocache!". It was a pretty fun experience! Watch it in HD!! She was begging me continuously to go geocaching the rest of the time I was in Calgary. She's hooked!
  2. Yesterday my girlfriend and I were looking for a geocache in the bush. We didn't find the cache but we did find a guys Social Insurance Number card, Visa card, and a Membership card to something. I'm hoping he just lost his wallet, and some kids ditched the stuff in the woods, and that he wasn't mugged or murdered I'm bringing it to the RCMP station near my house tomorrow.
  3. Oh well that helps a lot. Good to know /thread.
  4. Tomorrow I'm dropping a cache in a creek/small river. As a question, should I tell people to bring rubber boots/water shoes in the description, or should I make a hint that says "You should bring boots!". Or would that be too mean?
  5. So how do you guys feel about the minor items, the municipality swag? I could take a photo if you guys like?
  6. That is anywhere ever involved with geocaching. Like when I had to reach my bare hand into the concealed nook of a public mail drop box, who knows what could have been up there...
  7. Haha, now if I only had insects trapped in amber to readily give away and not induct into my fossil collection... On the other hand, I wouldn't catch insects and trap them in a resin just for the purpose of geocaching. That goes severly against my moral code. Lol. On the topic of fossils, I did find some ammolite recently (ammonites where the mantle of their shell has fossilized into a gemstone) and a lot of it is in fragments that could make cool swag. Just put it in a little case and give it a label so people know it's not just a shiny rock and some mud... hah.
  8. Hello, I was downtown today doing some errands, I took with me a $50 gift certificate I received while working for the muncipality to redeem for municipality merchandise. So I took/brought $50 worth of lanyards and keychains as well as 2 neat pen/pencil sets (FTF prize maybe?) that come in their own little plastic containers. All of these things have our municipalities logo on it and I think they're pretty cool. I know some people like to collect signature items and some people like collecting seemingly meaningless trinkets. How would you feel if you found a laminated picture of a local insect you may have never known about with information about it? Something like this Gold-and-Brown Rove Beetle (Ontholestes cingulatus) I photographed.... What do you guys like to find/take when you're geocaching, what do you dislike finding/taking in a geocache? Would you like to find merchandise from your city/region/muncipality/hamlet and photos of insects?
  9. I'm going to have to go with the "sticking my hand into random holes/rotting wood" idea. I'm an amatuer entomologist, so I know what kind of insects and arachnids live in my neck of the woods, and what they're capable of. On the 7th I was actually working on collecting samples of Elateridae specimens for a gentlemen in the States and as I reached into some wood to turn it over looking for the beetles I got a sharp pain right above the cuticle of my right ring finger, I noticed some ants near by and figured one bit me, and didn't think any more of it and left them alone. Two day later on the ninth my finger became swollen and bloated, and felt so weird when I bent my finger (not painful), I though an insect or spider had bitten me then and there, but I hadn't noticed anything, it wasn't until last night I realized what probably happened. The swelling is just starting to go down now.
  10. Why are you implying Canadian's don't know anything about rattlesnakes, it's not like the whole country is tundra, or do you believe that? I've run into about 3 rattlers while down south in the Alberta Badlands, though luckily I live further north than their natural range, so don't have to run into them on a regular basis. Maybe you should think about your caching situation if this is the case. Instead of shooting rattlesnakes, maybe you should do some caches with your children that are a little less dangerous. Like Caireboo said, you are encroaching upon their habitat not the other way around, so of course they're going to show aggression, to them you could be a potential predator and they're just defending themselves. I somehow doubt that you were all of a sudden surrounded by six rattlesnakes and you're making it out as if they were some malicious gang holding switchblades and baseball bats while wearing leather jackets while you decided to take a shortcut down the ally. You most definately had/will have an exit available and should take it, before killing an animal. Killing should only be used as a last resort, and if you disagree you're an irresposible individual who is just looking for a reason to shoot something, and shouldn't own a firearm at all.
  11. Well there isn't any "no trespassing" signs... ha ha ha. It's like the old saying "It's only illegal if you get caught".
  12. Hmm. Good to know, the only issue is having to go to Edmonton, which at the moment isn't a very realistic thing for me.
  13. That's impossible. CITO without caching is just picking up litter. The name is not synonymous with picking up litter or generally cleaning up. If you want to be picky there is a cache in the general area. But thanks for the GC's I'll take a look and see how I feel about it.
  14. Hmm, are you thinking H2S and other highly flammable/toxic gasses?
  15. Yeah of course, I would never ask someone to do something that I found too dangerous to do myself (which probably wouldn't take that much ), do you have any of the GC's so I can see the kind of descriptions and ratings they gave the terrain?
  16. Hey, A few blocks from my house there is a Storm Water pond fed by gutter water. My girlfriend and I were doing some CITO (without the caching) around there (the pond is circled by a walking path) and while cleaning we discovered one of the concrete pipes that is usually grated up had it's grate removed. If you were caching in my area would you consider this an interesting cache to do, or would you think it is too dangerous/gross? I haven't gone in and checked it out yet, but you definately would need boots and flashlights/headlamps. I was thinking for the cache I could use some reflectors and make a cool spiralling path along the pipe towards the cache and for directions if the pipe ends up to be maze like.
  17. Hmm, I don't think I'll be able to get an ammo can anytime soon, I'm in a pretty secluded area, I'd have to look around for sure. Maybe I'll try it, if it goes well, I'll check on it each spring and hopefully it'll be fine, if not, I'll just remove the cache and disable the listing.
  18. I want to place a cache in a river here, but our winters are pretty brutal. I was going to place a small lockn'lock inside a larger one for waterproofing, but will that survive being frozen solid repeatedly?
  19. Why would you shoot a rattlesnake unless there was no other choice. Seems like senseless violence to me. Even if it was on a cache you could have just moved it with a stick or tossed some stones at it to make it leave...
  20. This was the only one the store had I'm afriad. I live in a small-ish community with not much choice when it comes to products. I might just return it and order it off of a website I guess...
  21. Well it turned on originally, and now it just is straight up not working. If I bring it back to the store I woon't be able to get the same model (i.e. no gps at all because of my current budget), so I'm kinda screwed either way.
  22. Hi everyone, I just bought my first GPSr yesterday, and as the title says it is a Garmin eTrex Legend H. It doesn't seem to be working now. I took it out of the box yesterday at my friends house, put in some batteries and let it acquire a satelitte signal. I then turned it off and put it aside since it wasn't the right time to be playing around with it. Anyway, a few hours later I get home and try to turn it on, and..... nothing. I replaced the batteries twice, and even tried to change the brightness settings (thinking that the screen could have just been on max brightness, though that seems impossible). So yeah I just wanted to see if this is a common/fixable problem before I call Garmin.
  23. My friend is actually my girlfriend, we're almost commonlaw now, so I don't think the extra space will be a problem @Qbar, Yep you're right, I am in Fort McMurray, how'd you guess? Where are you located? I think to begin there is a nice lake off of a place called Tower Road here, about a 13 km drive from inside of town down it, and maybe an 8 km or so hike to the lake through a bit of bush and some cutting trails. Another question, how do you guys protect your cars if you leave them, I'd hate to have my vehicle broken into, I know Tower Road can be host to a lot of drinking teens and paintballers.
  24. That's a great website, thanks. Okay, I'm glad I got some replies before I went out and bought the tent. It's true though, when my life can depend on it why go with a low quality product. Thanks. I may have more questions in the future.
  25. Hello, My girlfriend and I are planning on starting backpacking and were interested in the idea of a tent that requires little preperation. I found this at our local Canadian Tire: http://www.canadiantire.ca/AST/browse/5/SportsRec/Camping/Tents1and3person/PRD~0765050P/Broadstone%252BPopup%252BTent.jsp?EnableScene7Video=true&Scene7VideoNumber=1&adlocation=CLP_Sports+%26+Rec%3ACamping_spmb_pdp_tent_en (2 person tent) Are pop-up tents worth it, or is it just better to deal with the hassle of setting a tent and packing it down everytime you move camps? My main worry is that the diameter of the tent when compressed could be a little annoying. Opinions?
