  1. I have both the "official" app, and C:Geo. At version 1.x, the only benefit of the official app was speed. It loaded faster and loaded cache details faster (because C:Geo uses screen scraping and the official app uses a published API). In all other respects C:Geo was superior (ease of use, features, look & feel). Since the 2.x version of the official app, C:Geo wins hands down because the official app does not work at all. It freezes, force closes, takes ages to start, doesn't shut down (and drains battery).
  2. From experience, the current "official" Android Geocaching app is unusable on my Android phone, and the "unofficial" alternative (C:Geo) has ceased to be. My daughter uses an iPhone, but finds the "official" app (or, possibly, the phone) wildly inaccurate. C:Geo will take me straight to the cache while she is poking around in the undergrowth 30+ metres away. Given that development has ceased on the one decent Android caching app, the official app is unusable and the official iPhone app has poor accuracy (not to mention that its a massive battery eater), I would suggest that you avoid smartphones.
  3. I'm pretty annoyed by the news about C:Geo. It worked really well and, importantly, reliably while the official app is unusable. It's all very well Groundspeak wanting to keep exclusivity with regard to their Android app, but it has to work. As soon as Groundspeak update their website so that C:Geo no longer works, I'm going to be without a usable geocaching app and will probably give up caching at that point.
  4. I would recommend C:Geo The "official" app, in its v2.x guise, is completely broken and unusable on my HTC Magic, and judging by the number of complaints and one-star ratings on the Android market, I'm far from alone. Don't be fooled by the apps overall 4 star rating, that is a hangover from the v1.x app. Geocahing v2.x is, IMHO, a complete disaster. Frankly, I'm appalled that Groundspeak are charging $10 (£6) for such an unreliable piece of software.
  5. BEWARE: Groundspeak have updated their "official" app to V2. It is now completely broken on my HTC Magic. Can't open any cache details making the app useless.
  6. Using latest version on an HTC Magic running Android 2.2 Application freezes when you get to the Geocache details page. Cannot scroll, cannot select anything. At the moment this app is 100% useless to me. This needs sorting, quickly. Or GS should open its API to others so that we are not relying on their, often buggy, application.
