  1. I'm trying to adopt out a cache, but when I fill out the online form, the Submit Request button is grayed out, and no-clicky for me. I tried it in three different browsers, no go in all. (IE8, Firefox, & Opera; all most recent versions) Is it just me, or what? Suggestions? Thanx!
  2. I just tried to send out an adoption request, but the Submit button and User Lookup links are not working for me. Anyone else having this is issue?

  4. Here you go: NYGO The forums used to be pretty active with members from Syracuse to Buffalo....Now its seems the site is heavily geared toward Buffalo area, so you should be golden.
  5. Yup, as stated already, the sync name has to match EXACTLY what you used for cachemate registration. Its even case sensitive. You have to reset your Palm with the sync name, or request another one from smittyware. You can request up to 5 sync names with your cachemate order. Instructions to look up your original order # and how to do it are on the smittyware website.
  6. I've been using a Lifedrive for over a year now for paperless caching. Unfortunately, I live in one of the US's armpits, so I havent been able to try out the WiFi. But as to being slow, I havent experienced this at all. Mine boots quickly, and switches between apps and home very quickly. There was one point where the internal memory was getting close to full, so I did some research and deleted some non-necessary files. I think i may have gotten a little overzealous though. I hate that Palm includes the AddIt garbageware, then leaves you no way to uninstall it. Anyway, my unit was freezing and resetting itself quite a bit. Wiping it and reinstalling everything has cured that. Also, one thing to note, when I first got my unit, and right after wiping it, I installed the LifeDrive 2.0 Update. Supposedly it fixes some of the performance issues you posted about. Get it at Palm Support. I recently got a bluetooth gps receiver for it, but I dont have any decent software or GPS type GUI to use on the LD. Also, the coords I DO get off the LD/BT GPS, differ quite a bit from my Meridians, so I dont know if I trust it yet. Also one thing I dont like, is having the BT on drains the battery VERY quickly. I only get 4 or 5 hrs out of the LD battery with it on. I did buy one of those external power supplies that use 4 AA batteries, off ebay for $9 +SH. Got 8 items in the package. Only thing I dont like about the PS, is the cord is only about 6"-8" long...Kind of a PIA to use while walking around with the PDA in one hand, with the PS tucked underneath it in your palm, makes for a handfull. As to hardware, the only problem I have is with the power switch. About half the time, I have to switch it two or three times before the power turns on/off. And the fact that the SD card is on the top edge, with NO attempt at making it even just a little water resistant. So I get real nervous if its misting or sprinkling out while I'm using it, or even just carrying it on my belt. If you ever buy a Rhinoskin metal case for it, DO NOT trust the metal screw that mounts the belt clip. Mine is constantly loosening from the back and forth motion of walking with it clipped to my belt. Twice now, it has unscrewed and the unit has fallen off my hip to the pavement. (At least the $3 plastic belt clip stayed safely clipped to my belt. ) But overall, I like the LD. I would guess that using TomTom software would be limiting for use on a Palm device being used as a handheld, since TomTom seems to be geared toward street navigation. Fugawi has a PalmOS plugin allowing the use of USGS topo and custom maps to be used on the Palm. I havent had much time to play with it yet.
  7. No way, Silly!.....Rochester is part of the Genesee Valley region...LOL Actually, yes its considered the extreme NW corner of Finger Lakes country also, also Western NY. Personally, (being a Rochesterarian and someone from the Southern Tier), I consider anything west of Syracuse Western NY. Its funny, cause all these different "regions" and areas get mentioned, and so many actually overlap, its VERY confusing for those of us in the overlap areas on which we actually belong to...LOL ps- Lyndon Road, I dont see an "attend" log for our Osage event next week...I REALLY hope you guys can make it.
  8. Try a google for your state's GIS clearinhouse. NY has an interactive index of all the USGS quads in the state. You click the quad, and it opens a page that gives you all the metadata, as well as a link to preview or download each quad. Each quad page also has NY DOT maps you can also preview or download. (Those are basically almost the same as the USGS maps, minus the topo info and other minor stuff.) Here's the NY site: NY GIS USGS & DOT index
  9. Huh...I always thought Allegany Cnty was just an extension of northern PA. LOL...Actually, I live only a couple miles from Allegany, and I've ALWAYS considered it part of westerny NY..LOL
  10. Thats probably because as soon as an "archive" log is posted, well, the cache is archived. Archived caches are not included in PQs. How often do you update your databases? GSAK always tells me what caches have been recently archived when I update. It lists them in the import summary when you import a PQ.
  11. I have one I placed this spring. Unfortunately, part of the trail near the cache is not maintained very well yet. There are a couple of culverts the trail crosses, one on either side of the cache, that washed out. There is a footpath around one, but they only mow a thin path once or twice a year. Unfortunately, the trail is nasty overgrown with prickers, hence I disabled it till Oct when the trail is passable again. Hopefully the trail will get repaired next spring, so I dont have to disable it for the summer again. http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...9756b&log=y
  12. I just googled Beeline. It looks like it imports .GPX files directly. In GSAK, click File->Export. 4th or 5th option down is GPX/LOC. That should allow you to dump a GPX file, that you should be able to import into Beeline. Good luck.
  13. I ALWAYS read them. Helps me decide whether its a cache I want to do or not. I have 6 caches based on historical sites, and am longwinded in my descriptions. I also put the pertinent cache info in the short description, then the history lesson goes in the long description. That way people can read it or not. If they dont want to print the three pages of history lesson, they can just print the first page, and (mostly) everything they need to find the cache is right there, in the first paragraph. I figure if people dont want to take the time to read and appreciate my history lesson, they are the cachers I probably wont be interested in reading the logs for anyway. In my book, if someone takes the time to do some actual research, and do a nice cache description, I figure they've probably put a decent effort into the hide. And even if they didnt, I might want to grab the cache, JUST to visit the site.
  14. You never said for sure what application you are using on the PDA. If it IS Cachemate, are you using the demo, or did you register Cachemate? I ask because the unregistered, it will only handle 10 caches, IIRC.
  15. Check this site. Looks like lots of free stuff to download. And even a link to a free GIS viewer. http://www.hawaii.gov/dbedt/gis/download.htm http://www.hawaii.gov/dbedt/gis/miscmaps.htm
  16. yeah, i agree Lep. But, in this case, the FLLT, as well as other land trusts, do NOT own most of the properties. These trusts are made up of donated conservations easements. That means the owners still OWN the property, get to use it, and get to make up many of the stipulations for access and usage. What the Trusts do, is enforce these stipulations. When an easement is signed over, it means the future usage for that land is limited, meaning the owners, or FUTURE landowners cannot develop the land outside of those stipulations, FOR EVER. That usually means no agricultural, commercial OR residential development. Any way, I guess since its pretty much up to the owners of the property, NOT the Trust to allow geocaching or not, and to not open up a can of worms, I'm guessing they just have a blanket policy of no caching. I wonder if NYGO has approached any of the trusts to work anything out? On another subject, I guess what I dont understand is DEC's reasoning on allowing caches on most of their 9 different classifications of managed areas, yet DONT allow them on WMAs. (Wildlife Management Areas). Now by the name, you might think, "well, they're wildlife areas". I dont see a difference between the local WMAs and the State Forests. As a matter of fact, Rattlesnake Hill WMA has many old roads going through it, some of which are still open to vehicular traffic, and some that were gated off for non-vehicular traffic. Hiking, mountainbiking, horse riding and even camping (in designated areas) is allowed on Rattlesnake Hill. It even shares a border with its neighboring Ossian State Forest, which is less developed. I guess there are reasons listed somewhere, but I dont understand it. I can see if an area is habitat for rare, endangered, or just not very common to the area wildlife species, or something like that, not allowing caching.
  17. PM me...I'll give you $130 + shipping for it.
  18. I agree with PrimeSuspect. Contact your local reviewer. I would tell him I want the cache placed right next to the railroad tracks. If people are gonna tresspass, you might as well make it easy for them. I would really go for #4. Bold text on the cache page, that there is only ONE possible, LEGAL, CORRECT way to access the cache. If people still cross the tracks, I would tattle on them to the local reviewer, and have him take action against the cachers, maybe by banning them...I know your local reviewer can be a real jerk!...LOL Seriously, dont archive it. If you archive it just because SOME people cant READ and play by the rules, what is the point in even placing a large percentage of the caches that are, or will be placed in the future. If we start archiving, or not placing caches because of a few bad apples, then we're severly limiting the game.
  19. And if you mean Mapsend Topo 3.0, yes you can...Its old enough that they hadnt started the BS with tying the software to a specific receiver.
  20. I clip two GPSs, GMRS radio, pouch for cigarettes, and electronic mosquito shield to the D-rings & molle straps on my pack. Then i have a belt pouch for my Palm, one for my medium sized camera, and one for my binoculars, all of which hang from the sternum strap across my chest. That puts everything I need to grab quick or repeatedly right at hand. Only thing with the sternum strap, is when you disconnect it to take the pack off, I have to slide each pouch off the strap before taking the pack off. An older version:
  21. Those are the names of conservation areas managed by the Finger Lakes Land Trust, located WITHIN the townships, named in parenthesis. Just as an FYI, GC39 The Spot, one of the oldest caches east of the Mississippi, and currently THE oldest active cache east of the Mississippi, is located just the other side of the Great Hill Trust area, in a DEC managed area. Its too bad the FLLT forbids caching. Great Hill is on the southern end of Canandaigua Lake, and offers a GORGEUS view up the length of the Lake. Would be an AWESOME place to put a cache.
  22. Very kewl idea. Cant help you, but when I was in the military, I was an avionics technician. I saw my first GPS unit in 1987. It was about 2ft long, 1.5ft wide, and about 8" high, and weighed about 50lbs. It had a separate display unit, that used those old wire-filament LED displays, lots of actual knobs and switches. Would be kewl to check one of those out against the new stuff, but I think it might be pretty hard to find a 400VAC, 120Hz power supply. The ones we worked on were in use in all-weather KC-130 Refuelers.
  23. I'll give you $25 for that piece of junk. I would check to see if there is a yahoo group you can join for the XLs or eXplorists. There is a decent group there for the Meridians, and they had the "secret" menus and all the info you could ever ask for about dealing with issues like this. I dont know if the XL's have the same or similar "secret" menu or not. I could probably give you the "secret" menu for the Meridians, but if its not the same, or if someone doesnt quite follow the directions, and keypresses EXACTLY, it can totally FUBAR your unit. I would suggest Googling for XL/eXplorist support groups before doing anything.
  24. Our County Tourism Board had the local State Park Manager (who NYGO managed to turn into a cacher), place a 7 part multi cache throughout the county, using the State Park, local historic locations, and local businesses as waypoints. The cache is part of a sponsored contest to win a $250 travel/tourism package. The contest is promoted in this years County Tourism Guide. The coordinates for the 2nd stage are hidden in a photo in the booklet. Also, each location used as a "point", is advertised in the Guide.
  25. I agree. I dont want to sound like my way is the best or easiest. Just a different way. Just like in Windows OS, there are usually MANY ways to accomplish the same thing. Many being only a click or two, or even a couple of keystrokes. Some people just learn one way first, and become more comfortable with that way, and it becomes second nature. I for one, dont use ANY keystrokes in Windows, if I can use the mouse.
