Capture the Flag
Capture the Flag is a travelbug competition between geocachers in the Port Orchard and Gig Harbor areas. Each team will have specially designated travelbugs called “flag(s)”. The object of the game is to keep your flag in your home area and “capture” your opponent’s flags from their home area and return it to your own. Points are awarded or taken away for certain actions in the game, including each retrieval of your own flag, or capture of your opponent’s flag. The game will be played to 500 points.
Flags:
Each team will design their own "flag(s)". It must be clearly marked with a laminated tag. The tag should make it clear that the bug is part of a contest and should not leave the Front Range. Flags may only be placed in traditional caches listed on www.geocaching.com (no virtuals, multis, puzzles, etc.). Bugs may not be placed in Member's Only Caches as it would create an unfair advantage if one team has more premium members than the other.
Points:
1. A team is awarded points based on the difficulty and terrain of the cache that they retrieve their opponent’s flag from. When a team grab’s an enemy flag, they get one point per star of difficulty and terrain on the cache they captured the flag from (i.e.: a 2/3 cache would be worth 5 points). This also applies to retrieving your team's flag from enemy territory after a capture.
2. A team is awarded 25 points for placing a captured flag in a cache in their home area.
3. A team is awarded one point for moving their own flag to a different cache in their home area, which only may be moved once every 6 hours and MUST be logged within 2 hours.
4. When a captured bug is placed into enemy territory, it should be returned to its home area as soon as possible to keep the game moving. To provide an incentive for the team that lost their bug to go and retrieve it, a 10 point bonus will be awarded for retrieving the bug within 24 hours of it being placed by the enemy team. Every 24 hours, two point will be deducted from the bonus. A bug sitting in enemy territory more than 5 days will actually lose points. This prevents a team from ignoring their own bug and only trying to capture the enemy's bug.
Okay, here are the rules and their respective penalties:
1. No person can have more than 1 flag in posession at the same time. Penalty: 10 points
2. If you grab or move a(n) enemy’s flag you cannot move any other enemy flag’s for 12 hours and
may only move one of your flags every 6 hours (this prevents people virtually logging flags) Penalty: 10 points
3. If you grab a flag you must drop it off in another legal cache within 24 hours. Penalty: 5 points for each day after the 24 hours (only applies to team members). In the event a flag is placed in a non legal cache, a penalty of 5 points will be assessed. (Legal caches are active traditional, non-member's only caches, listed on geocaching.com) (if the opposing team retrieve it first from a non legal cache first they will still receive the capture points.)
4. To keep the bugs moving, please place the flag in a cache that has difficulty and terrain ratings of 3 stars or less. Penalty: 2 points per star for either rating above 3 stars (a 4/4 cache would be worth a 16 point penalty, a 2/3.5 cache would be worth a 7 point penalty). Do not place a bug in a 5 star cache! Special 50 point penalty applies to 5 star caches.
5. Flags must not leave the Front Range. Penalty: 10 points per day for removing either flag from the playing field.
6. If a non-player removes a flag from the area, the team that owns the flag will be assessed a one point per day penalty until the flag is recovered. Please mark your bug well so non-players will know to leave it alone. If a bug goes "missing" for a period of 10 days, it must be replaced with another bug (use the COPY tag as the first replacement).
7. Once an enemy bug is placed, the capturing team may not move it until its returned to its home area by its own team. This prevents one team from playing "keep away" and will help the bug return to its home area quickly. It can then be captured or moved around its home area for points. In the event an enemy bug is moved after being captured and placed, a 5 point per move penalty will be assessed on the capturing team.
8. Clever attempts to skew the game by exploiting loopholes in the rules: 50 point penalty.
9. In the event a rule is broken and there is no set penalty for it, the referees have decided that the penalty will be 5 points. This eliminates questions over how much to penalize a team for violating a rule that has no set value.
Teams: Geocachers in the Port Orchard vs Gig Harbor area that have signed up by emailing the GOVERNOR/Referees (or have posted on the forums page). Players can join the game at any time. This is to allow cachers to play that first hear about the game after it has started.
Team Leaders: The Team Leaders are responsible for communicating referee decisions to their respective teams. They are also the only people that should email the referees or individuals about improper bug grabs and drops. For example, if a non-player grabs a bug, the team leader of the affected bug should be the only one to send an email to them, not everyone on the team. The last thing we need is to upset someone with a dozen emails because they moved a bug incorrectly. That person could retaliate and ruin the game. Please let the Team Leaders handle situations that arise. If you have any questions, email your Team Leader and they will address the situation with the appropriate parties (refs, non-players, players, etc)
Referees: 1 Governor to oversee the event and 2 Referees to keep track of rule following/breaking and the Team Leaders (1 per 10 cachers per team)
[/b]GOVERNOR AND REFEREES AS OF NOW WILL BE NON-PLAYERS
Objective: To accumulate points for your team by getting the enemy flag into your territory and keeping your own flag out of enemy hands. You help your team gain points by moving your team's flag around your territory. You help your team even more by retrieving a flag from the other team's territory and returning it to your own turf (a 'capture'). After a bug has been captured, it does not earn points for either team until it is retrieved by it's own team, so as to award or subtract points from both teams at one time rather than having to make more work for refs/GOVERNOR.
