  1. Topo maps are never locked to a unit.

Never say never. I can provide an example, but it doesn't help this discussion, so I'll leave it at that.

You can also unlock to mutiple units but here we go too.....

so you are saying if i have a 60csx i can use the card out of that and put it in my oregon 550 and it will work?

These are not high sensitivity receivers. Not recommended.

Actually they arent bad unless you have very heavy tree cover. I do multi state offroad motorcycle races by waypoints alone. If its good enough for that than its more than capable of a little geocaching.

  3. What I want to know is why tracks are truncated to only 500 points when you save them.

Yea... Thats a bummer but you can get around that by renaming the track you want to load to ACTIVE LOG. It can then be a single track of 10,000 points.

  4. I use the Magellan eXplorist GC and love it! It is perfect for me.... but my hubby on the other hand... can not see the screen, it is too small. Can anyone suggest a GPS that has a larger screen, that is still accurate, easy to use and not outrageously expensive?

    Thanx

It's true you have to choose as there is a real stall of good hiking ect. units on the market. With that said there are some discontinued units that still work very well with larger screens and nice functions. I would look at this Garmin series used on craigslist.

  5. As a PM you should be running PQs. Giving you up to 1000 caches in a single file. Which will come in a .gpx format. You'd do better using GSAK or EasyGPS to transfer the info into your unit.

BAM... Thats the fix for me. I can choose a .gpx format only on the PQ page. All of the feedback here really helped.

    Thanks guys!!

  6. download it via the gpx file button on the cache page instead and then open it in mapsource. That format holds more info that you could use if you wanted to. GC changed the .loc file format and mapsource no longer opens it as you found out. Dont know why non-PM`s format is still the old. EasyGPS and other programs still open it and you could save it via them and then open it in mapsource.

    Good info... Thanks

  7. Hello Everyone

I'm new to Geocaching, so new I don't even have a GPS. I was looking to buy a used Garmin E-Trex Legend. Its within my budget. The specs on Garmins web site says this GPS in not geocaching friendly. Can this GPS still be used for geocaching?

    Thanks

Works fine for Geocaching. Just make sure it is more than just the base unit model.

The E-trex Legend HcX will have the best signal if you get into heavy trees, color screen and expandable memmory.

The CX has Color and expandable memmory for more maps. You want this. It is only missing the new Sirf chip for a better signal.

or look for a used 60 series on Craigslist. I just picked up a replacement unit. 60CsX for $100

  8. This is a repost as this looks like a more technical forum.

I have a Garmin 60CsX and have never had an issue loading waypoints to my unit using Mapsource software until joining as a Premium Member.

Now when I save the waypoint .LOC file to my computer as a Premium member I cannot open it using Mapsource. I get the message (file could not be imported)

If I sign out and try it as a non premium member it works just fine. I have updated my mapsource software with no change and tried changing .loc to All Type files. I cannot find any differences in the file properties but there must be something. Any Ideas??

  9. what are you downloading it as a .loc or .gpx file?

Thanks for the responce. I am downloading it as a .loc file as it will only let me change it to ALL TYPES or .LOC

When I compare the two files downloaded. (logged in, or logged out) I see no difference in properties yet the file I download when logged out opens fine. Its only when I'm logged in as a premium member that it does not open. :-O
