  1. It can be very hard to see in bright sunlight, but I've found that if I hold it so the screen is slightly diagonal it reads better - probably because it reduces some glare. It's the one main improvement that will surely be addressed by Garmin. I'm still learning mine, and love it. I've picked up a few routing pointers to try in this very thread. The only thing I wish it did was display distance to the cache while in the map mode. As far as I can tell it does not do that...
  2. My only Dissapointment (if you could call it that) with my magnetic TB is that it is so small. On the back tailgate of my truck it virtually disappears, so it being noticed while on the road is just about nill. I think the only way it would be seen is if someone is in gridlock traffic behind me, or notices it in a parking lot. I'm going to have a much larger vinyl decal made like on the VW Bug in post #23. That should give me a much greater chance of having the truck discovered while actually on the road where I spend most of my time.
  3. When you get it back put it in an Otterbox. Not only will it be waterproof (you could take the dang thing scuba diving) it will also be somewhat protected from those inevitable drops.
  4. I bring a can of 3M spray glue with me to the cache site. When I get there I spray the container with the glue and roll it in the surrounding area leaves, twigs and dirt. The container disappears into the background.
  5. Lets see - poison oak all over both legs, thorns and scratches & the latest road rash on my forearm when I slipped down a decomposed granite bank.
  6. Same here - I just leave it in the camera bag and run it through the machine. Never had a problem either with the machine or the people running it.
  7. Seems to be a common theme here - "Do what you can and don't sweat the whiners". There are elitests in everything I've done - it never changes. I found my first cache at the beginning of this year, but didn't have a chance for many months to find others. I've made good progress the past two weeks and surpassed 20 finds this weekend, and just placed my first on saturday. For me it's about placing (or visiting) a really cool cache idea or location, rather than the mundane micro on the corner of 5th & main just to have big numbers.
  8. I've been developing an ecocache challenge that gives GPS coordinates to different areas around our city that are specific to some science subject, like a visible fault, geological feature etc. The subject section of the coordinate page describes the actual science detail the finder is looking at. So far I've been able to include ecology, geology, oceanography and botany into the project. I'm trying to get 20 locations in the challenge to make it interesting and expand the breadth of science subjects.
  9. Our foundation is planning to do just that this fall. We plan on getting local businesses involved to donate goods or services. The cache would contain cards exchangeable for the good or service, or even be a mystery prize - that way one person (participating or muggle) won't clean out the cache. We also are trying to get businesses to be an actual waypoint themselves - i.e. the GPS would lead right to their front door and actually get customers into the establishment. That way they could personally give either a promotional item or something like a scoop of icecream etc... We are planning to set up an online signup page with the ability to forward customized pages to their friends for sponsorship - and all paid through paypal. A grand prize would be given to the person who brings in the most sponsorship money. Only those who have signed up online will get e-mailed the coordinate pages the night before. Since these kind of caches are transient - you wouldnt want to use the same locations everytime you did your fundraiser - keeping the locations off this "world community" makes sense.
  10. Gold? If you make a golden travel bug, please place it in my cache. I don't know about using a moon rock for a TB, I think that this would get taken since it in itself has great value since it is from the moon. Why not take an ordinary rock and paint it anc call it a moon rock? Well, that gives me an idea! I found this rock a year ago in Half Moon Bay and brought it home. i naturally called it the "Moon Rock". It even has holes to run a chain through...weighs about 18 lbs
  11. here it is: World Geocache Map I use this site all the time, as it is so much easier to just click a location on a map. Clicking the cache forwards you to this site for the details. I saved the link for just Utah, but you can choose anyplace on the planet at this site.
  12. Being serious into bird photography, I alway carry my big digital SLR with the 400mm lens. I get lots of attention, but nobody thinks twice when they see me exiting the brush carrying it - just another nature photographer. It can be a hassle juggling all the equipment though.
  13. I went out front of the house and paced off 10 seconds due north using my GPS. That error would have put you about 60-70 feet off - depending on the GPS error.
