  1. I have a certain amount of sympathy for you and quite a lot of emapthy as just last week I had all my logs deleted from a series I'd done and on which I put some negative comments. All my logs were deleted, even on the caches where I'd said nice things! Thankfully it's all sorted now though. COs seem happy to take the praise but naturally criticism isn't quite so easy to take. So many cachers use copy and paste these days or even post a blank log so that when someone does express a less than favourable opinion then it can be a bit of a shock. However, a lot of us rely on the last few logs of a cache to give us an accurate indication of the state of play. It would be a shame if only nice logs saw the light of day and I've no intention of praising a cache which I think is dangerous or badly maintained or thoughtlessly placed but I think we need to word our criticism carefully. And by the way, I don't carry spare logs about with me and am not in the habit of maintaining other people's caches.
  2. I downloaded the upgrade this morning and although it looks good it is totally unusable and forces closes almost all the time. I've uninstalled and reinstalled it and it's made no difference. What's gone wrong?
  3. i think they should all be published at the same time and i say this as as someone who doesn't care one way or another about FTFs. i just don't like the idea of people trying to manipulate who gets, or doesn't get, the FTF by staggering the release of caches. also, where's the satisfaction in getting an FTF when deep down you know you only got it because everything possible had been done to deter the local FTF hounds?
  4. i got custody of both dogs and the caching account when i split with my ex, and then sadly my jack russell died, but i couldn't imagine being anyone else except 8paws4legs, or 8p4l, for short. many thanks to dogastus who i believe was responsible for actually coining the shortened version the full version is a bit of a pain to write on cache logs but that's what stamps are for isn't it? the most important part of our name is the 8paws bit as i'll never forget that i once had two dogs so please don't ever call us 4paws
  5. now i'm beginning to remember why i rarely bother to post on the forums... this was one of the most enjoyable threads i've read for some time and i'm loving the pics but i'm quite quickly losing the will to post over the way everything has a downer put on it sooner or later
  6. Another added benefit of having Rufus is that he keeps me warm at night, although I hasten to add he's not allowed to get under the duvet and he does sometimes howl in his sleep . But all in all he greatly enhances my life.
  7. Thanks to Neath Worthies for taking the time to make these comments as I've been watching with sadness the way the 'other' thread has developed Most dog owners are responsible and we're more than happy to apologise if our dogs cause any upset to others. Admittedly Rufus is probably not quite as well trained as the dog just described but that's what his lead is for . That, a bag of treats, the ability to shout very loudly and a sharp eye for any potential hazards and walkies are generally uneventful yet enjoyable for us both
  8. it's possible that you are right but i'd certainly question the motives of someone who threw their toys out of the pram quite so spectacularly over the furore of the royal parks' caches. afterall, why post this email, or selected parts of it, online at all? why not just flag it to the reviewers?
  9. now, now... this isn't going to degenerate into a rant about micros is it and let's face it, it's not like he needs the money is it, so i'd guess he's unbribable
  10. does anyone want to open a book on what series Kewfriend is going to target next... the church micro series, off yer trolley, bus stop bewilderment, a - road anarchy... my money's on off yer trolley...
  11. hi everyone! got to admit to being a bit bemused by all the interest our use of POP has generated. i believe it is a term used only locally in our area and yes, it does indicate that the cache is easy but the acronym generally stands for Piece of Pie and nothing more offensive than that. to be honest i tend to get more offended by people that copy and paste on all my caches rather than the use of a little known term such as this. anymore questions about it then please feel free to drop me a line or post them on this thread.
  12. i've only just noticed this thread and thought maybe it was meant for me... alas, no it wasn't, but it's still cool to discover i share my birthday with the Greenwich Meridian makes me kind of wish i'd gone there instead of caching in soggy somerset
  13. rufus and myself have just spent the last five weekends caching in wiltshire and i've got to admit that yesterday there did seem to be quite a few micros amongst our finds and at least one of them was a badly thought out, disappointing hide. however, i love wiltshire and the scenery and trails we've followed have more than made up for the lack of larger caches. admittedly i don't want to see a plethora of badly placed micros but to ignore this entire county just because it's not awash with ammo boxes is a shame. the thing that irks me the most is ill thought-out caches placed by owners just for the sake of placing one and maybe it's most often micros that are used in this type of hide, thus giving them a bad name. and just for the record, the hound and myself will be driving back down the M4 again on saturday to do yet more caching in wiltshire
  14. I had a similar conversation with another cacher the other week after we read some quite harsh comments about a series of caches put out by some inexperienced hiders. To my mind the comments were mainly unjustified or at least the points could have been put across in a more constructive way. I'm currently feeling quite guilty about all this as there was nothing stopping me from contacting the cache owners and telling them that IMHO their series was fine except for maybe one or two small things . Maybe we all need to remember that we were newbies once upon a time and think before we criticise too much. However, if there is a valid criticism to be made then we shouldn't be too scared to do so although I think a follow up email to the owner wouldn't go amiss in some cases. I've archived caches that i've placed in a totally inappropriate spot and without the comments of my fellow cachers I'd never have known there was a problem.
  15. has this feature really been there all this time quite a few of my caches are subscriber-only but i've never noticed this handy little option before. thanks for bringing it to my attention
  16. i'm forever on FB and never knew this group existed have just joined up though
  17. i'd like to think i'm a responsible dog owner and if rufus was behaving in the manner described above i don't think i'd have any quarrel with you if you did give him a good kicking. afterall, it'd be saving me the job of doing it later on as regarding cattle, i really really hate having any contact with them at all and yesterday while doing the simply ampshire series my second cache required us to go into a field full of my worst nightmare - friesans and to make matters even worse the cache was being guarded by these black and white monstrosities i've got to admit i did toy with the idea of going home but in end we hugged the side of the field until we got near GZ and then i got a bit chicken and ducked under the barb wire fence with rufus i know that must count as trespassing but i'm sure they could sense our fear and these creatures are HUGE! we wouldn't stand a chance! in the fields near our home i know i can safely let rufus loose and he will just run to the other side of the field and wait for me. unfortunately, in unknown territory i've got a horrible feeling he's just going to come running back to me for protection it's very sad to think this poor dog walker lost her life while probably thinking she was doing the right thing by keeping the dogs on the lead. while signs may not be the ideal route to go down it's certainly true that people need to be better educated about the dangers of cattle and dogs. while it may be obvious to some of us what to do, others will have no idea. and i've tried shouting McDonalds at them but it just doesn't work
  18. to be honest i hadn't worked out the timing of everything we did that day so thanks to stonefielders for that. one thing i'd now like to add is how the hell does anyone think that that was a walk in the park and that records are now easy to come by? finding caches in the dark isn't a barrel of laughs either when you've been awake for over 20 hours! the whole adventure was many things but easy wasn't one of them!
  19. i don't normally write on these forums (being quite shy and retiring) but i couldn't really ignore this topic as i'm one of the cachers who did the 155 caches in 24 hours. i'm not 100% sure if it's a UK record or not as the sport is largely self-regulatory and for all i know there could be people who do these sorts of numbers on a regular basis but who just aren't interested in having their achievements recognised. however, even if it isn't a UK record we went out and did our best to break what we thought was the old record of 151. i'm not after a pat on the back from anyone but i did get a sense of achievement out of successfully doing what we set out to do and it was worth all the cuts, the grazes, the frizzy hair and the aching legs. i'm not sure i'd want to do it again in a hurry but i'm not going to say never again. not everyone is number chasing or interested in records and no one (i hope) is being forced to heap adulation on those claiming them. i also appreciate that records are easier to break now than a few years ago but it adds another dimension to caching to those of us who are interested in these things. lastly, i would like to say that whether it is a record or not, it was in no way an easy day/night and left both myself and asfastasfcuk dead on our feet.
  20. be confident. i usually keep rufus off the lead near cows as, being a country hound, he knows they are not to be trifled with and he tends to keep out of their way. they can be intimidating but i make sure i know where my escape route is and most of the time they are merely curious.
  21. well done that man! never even occurred to me to keep an eye on my DNFs but i shall aspire to do so from this moment onwards.
  22. i wouldn't know where to start with just an o/s map so it's memory map and fugawi for me. i print the maps out though and take them with me. i ruined the only compass i had by leaving it near a strong magnetic source - it was never the same after that. therefore when out in the field i just have the GPSr to rely on. can't afford a PDA
