  5. I think the closest I have seen so far as a EarthCache power trail was in Louisville KY and the area. It took us a while, but we did over 15 EarthCaches while we were there.

  10. For the value, I like the Magellan Explorist GC. Pretty much can't hurt it, water resistant, easy to load and change caches and not bad on the battery life. They are like $150 new in stores. I saw one new in box on the main online auction site for $80 this morning. If you have a smart phone, the $10 geocaching app from Groundspeak is very good and easy to use and pretty accurate. Hope that helps. MarkCase Education Forum Moderator
  11. If you go go earthcache.org, they explain the bronze, silver, gold and platinum earthcache master status as well as the quartz through emerald find status. Hope that helps.
  12. The reason I first decided on premium membership is to help pay for the game. There are a lot of expenses keeping Geocaching going as a hobby. It is more than 'just a web site'. The full time people that are needed for database management alone! Premium membership is a bargin for me. About 10 cents a day. I wish my cable bill was that good!
  13. I have been unable posting video clips on my listings. I really don't know how to do that. I love the idea, tried it once, made a mess of my listing and stopped. I am hoping someone that has more tech savy web page design can help!
  14. When a cacher logs the find and the questions are not addressed within a day or so, I send a reminder email. So far, everyone has answered my questions.
  15. So, tell us... did you get your EarthCache published? Let's see!
  16. Take a look at these EarthCaches. They may give you an idea. GC29A2A Mish Mash Marsh (is it a marsh or swamp) GC12YBD Losing Battle of Water and Land GC2TFC6 Urban Wetland- Pinecroft Lake (urban marsh converting to swamp) GC28YNW Wetlands of North Cabarrus Park GC32XXA WU 125th The Wetlands Earthcache GC1W0H3 Communities of Currituck Banks If you need some help, please let me know. Be glad to offer my limited information. Mark
  17. two more things: any way GS may make one of those souveniers for IECD 2012? and: what is the them for this year earth science week? Might make a difference what earthcache to visit that day or even set up
  18. Would anyone in the world be willing to 'partner' a project of some kind on this day? A joint CITO at and EC? How about a facetime chat? A skype? I am open to just about any type of joint activity. Is there a Greensboro of any type spelling somewhere in the world that we can do a same time/ same name event at and EC? What about a My EC is like your EC event with an event at two or more simliar EC in different locations? Hey, I am brainstorming here. I think I am going to put a notice in the educational forum so educators can brainstorm with us.. Mark
  19. So, how do we contact you to get our package of goodies for participants?
  20. It is more than 90 days out so I can't post an event yet, but count an event in the center part of North Carolina, USA as one of the first!
  21. The one EC I developed for the land trust has several biology components but tied directly to the geological component. That is how the reviewer and I were able to meet in the middle and satisfy both parties. A second EC I developed for an urban swamp/marsh question must include vegetation because the definition of depends upon the type of flora growing. I had to include that information for that EC developed for another land trust. I am currently working on a series of EC for the county school system. The school system wanted and EC near each high school (16 in the county) but finding enough unique geological features to provide spacing and relevant questions for earth science is difficult. The project would be easier to do if the flora could be an equal component of the criteria. Still working on the creative geological component that will meet the needs of the educational program and cachers alike.
  22. So far, every EarthCache I have visited that required a trip inside a building has clearly stated the cost to enter the building or the times the building is open to the public. As long as I have that information up front, I am happy to visit these caches.
  23. EarthCaches are administered by the Geological Socieity of America. They set the items allowed and not allowed for EarthCaches. I teach high school and AP earth science classes and agree, the difinition of earth science is very restrictive to geological processes only. Once I realized that GSA set the rules and administrates EarthCaches, it made it easier to start to develop them. I was asked by a land trust to set an EarthCache on their property. They wanted people to visit, but not tromp through the underbrush to find a physical caches. They wanted information on the plant sepecies as well as the geology, so it took some creative writing and discussion back and forth with the earthcache reviewer but it finally was published and has been visited quite often. I set up a 14 stage multi and was very easy to visit each stage. There are a couple stages that require some extention from what they have read in the write up and information they find along the trail. I hope that helps a litte as you set up more EarthCaches. I would love some time to come to your part of the world to visit the unique ones there.
  24. Thanks for the discussion and opinions. I see both sides here. So far, nothing compells me to develp PMO EC yet. Since I pay for my PM, I get to find those as well.
