  1. Stargazer, don't hesitate to ask these simple questions. We all had to start somewhere, these GPS units require that you think a little out of the box to understand what's going on. The manuals are well written, but the written word can sometimes be mis-interpreted. (see: attorney) Another tool at your disposal that people love to point to is that little search link on the top of this page. Not everything has been discussed and there are always new issues popping up, but there are a few basic topics that have been looked at so often that the old timers get a little twitchy when they pop up yet again. Welcome to everyones' favorite PHRG.

  3. I can't be the only geocacher that owns the DVD. On every viewing I spot another great place to hide a cache. It's just a movie (feel free to list a hiding spot in another) but where would you have hidden a cache if reality wasn't?
  4. Parking fees are different. Many urban caches are in areas where you either need to park in an hourly garage, or dance the dance of the quarter meter. I wouldn't expect people to declare these sorts of expenses. If the rural park pay booth, is setup in a way that you simply can't avoid paying the entrance fee without walking an unreasonable distance. This information, if known in advance, should be available. Much like listing access to restrooms or if dogs, bicycles, majicman, or even camping is allowed.

  7. She shouldn't have to make any changes. I never have with any of the eTrex units I've owned. Goldie - if you don't have access to a data cable, check the prices on eBay and other lists. I've seen them for as low as $15, it's something worth having if you're going to find many caches. (Plus it allows you to do cool things with the tracklogs) It's not manditory so don't feel pressured.

  9. Sorry Majic_on_the_half_shell, this needs a serious response. Many here have commented that individuals are responsible for their own safety. I couldn't agree more but am not limiting this concern to snakes and injury from external forces. If you've lived a sedimentary life for an extended time, please be careful to not put undue strain on the old ticker. I'm concerned that some psycho will place a bomb somewhere, someday. I'm very afraid that we'll lose someone who pushed themselves too hard in the pursuit of a FTF or another geonotch under their belt.

I'm still having a hard time picturing the scenario. So, you're hunting a geocache and have the intended location as the point being sought. Suddenly as if Tinkerbell sprinkled some pixie dust, the unit changes it's mind and goes from claiming that the cache is 328 meters away, to several kilometers? quote: But the only thing i could think of is that , when i first bought the unit while in australia it had the original software on it . and i didn't experience this problem until i uploaded the newest version . So it maybe a software fault If it holds it's position like your average politician, I'd say it was worth trying the firmware reload. quote: Thanks for your help Well, thank me (or not) after the unit stabilizes.

  13. The GPS jumps from locating one spot to another on its own? Go into a little more detail of exactly what is happening and when. You probably know what you are doing, but as anyone in tech support knows, you make sure the basics are covered first. You know how to mark a waypoint and navigate back to that spot? Are you waiting for it to grab a solid lock on it's location before marking the spot?
  14. quote:CourtneyP asks:What's the status? I think solohiker scared Jeremy off. Actually Genius Loci made some points that need to be addressed. New people really are needed to keep this hobby alive. If people are pressured into getting a GPS, a membership through Groundspeak, trading cards, and trading items. They may perceive this as being too much of investment. An older GPS will work, membership is optional, and trading items are also somewhat optional. [You don't HAVE to take anything] Joining in on the fun is something anyone can do. Maybe this could be packaged with the membership? Sign up as a premium member ($100) and receive 100 numbered cards that include a print of the photo you upload. Obviously I know nothing about printing costs.
  15. quote:Originally posted by solohiker:I would post a warning and leave the cache open. Rapists don't scare me and more traffic through the park would discourage such cretins. I would like to see an article about a geocacher preventing a rape. SoloHiker makes an interesting point. A cache in the area might bring in *more* people and lower the chances of attack for everyone. The numbers involved don't seem very high though.

  18. Many of you are missing what would be the biggest point for me. That eliment of surprise, not knowing what's inside. Some people have even incorporated this into their holidays. (gift wrap) Many people are drawn to this PHRGS because they enjoy peeking inside something that has unknown contents. I personally may not bid but I fully support those that do and hope this is very profitable for the seller so she can continue to do this. Everyone gets their kicks in different ways... Look at Majicman for cryin out loud....

  20. Talk about a cache site where you really don't want to bury. Thank you for the heads-up Mopar.

  22. When I go to the cache BunkerDave linked I get the following. "ALERT! The cache no longer exists, whether by act of nature or other circumstance." Did this cache ever see the light of day?
