  1. I had scratched my Garmin eTrex a few years ago (actually it was Lewa). A nice deep scratch. I went to Tap Plastics here and picked up some rubbing compound. Took a while to rub it out, but it worked pretty good. The eTrex is a plastic, but it is a hard plastic so it takes a while.
  2. I have played with Geocaching Live a little bit, and found it kind of confusing too. I think one of my problems is just impatience though. I was expecting caches to come up quicker and descriptions to come up quicker (after I managed to get a satellite lock). But they are a little slower. Makes sense though. It has to download that information from the web, and not stored internally like my Colorado (which I do like). Zooming seems akward, but couldn't tell you how to do it better. Maybe bigger buttons in general would help. One thing that took me a while to realize is that the red satellite dish in the upper right hand corner means to does NOT have a lock. So waiting for that to happen helped. Check out the mode button too. That will give you different display types (map, compass). But it is a handy app when I want to go caching on a spur of the moment and don't have my GPS loaded. There are a few enhancements I think could be made to it (marking caches as found, or at least finding out how to do that). There is an option to load a GPX file (pocket query). I haven't tried that out. Wonder if that might speed somethings up.
  3. Here is an interesting page that may help with deciding if there are outages or not. Won't help with the 8 vs 12 visible PRNs (the Trimble software should be good for that). I believe there are a lot of people who depend on this page, so would guess that it is as accurate as can be expected. US Coast Guard Active NANU Status
  4. This doesn't seem to be much of an update. If the startup screen is as invisible as people are saying, then it may not be worth it. It also takes long enough to boot, I don't want to slow it down any more (or does the startup screen not really add any time to the boot time unless you put a big number in). The power up stability sounds good, but generally don't have a problem with mine (won't say never though). I do like my Colorado though. Just a few bugs in it still. My biggest issue being when I get out of the car it seems to take it a while to move into walking mode and get out of car mode. I really like the paperless part of it. And it seems to be pretty accurate once it settles down.
  5. Check out the Air Force's response in this article Air Force Responds to GPS Outage Concerns. In a nutshell, the chances that GPS will fail is very unlikely. The chance that it could start performing at less than current performance (which is much better than the specification requires) is a possibility, but still not a probability.
  6. I have the same problem with mine. I have the latest software. I think one version of the software did make it better, but it isn't fixed. If I am in a situation I need it faster, I will just power cycle it and it seems to work. But definitely not the way it should be.
  7. I have seen the problem too, though I don't think that it is a new problem. What I have found is that when you are at the condition, select spell, and you will see that what you had entered last time is still there. Delete the characters (using the << character) and then select Done. The full list will then reappear. I guess one could claim it was a feature, though I have never found it to be helpful myself.
  8. LOL This is a joke, Yes. The must have fell for it in London: http://www.google.com/hostednews/ukpress/a...cYPOqBqJNqIuhmw Actually this is correct. It isn't a joke. The time will be (actually was) 23:59:60 UTC. You will need to figure out what time that is for your time zone. 15:59:60 Pacific time. Any self-respecting GPS receiver will know about it and handle it correctly. Note that it occurred at 23:59:60 UTC, not local time, so it has already occurred (about 45 minutes ago as I type this). Hope you enjoyed it. It might be the last for a while. There is talk in the community of not doing another one until there is a 500 second difference, which could be in 500 years or more (depending how how our home planet wobbles around).
  9. I had always thought this to be a hardware problem. Fixed by taking the unit apart and reseating the connector between the main board and the display. It seems as of late that the feeling is that this is a software issue. I had hoped that was the case (I have one that exhibits the problem). But I just updated a friend's Legend hoping it would take care of the problem and it did not. Maybe I should try updating mine as well and see if that fixes it. But it still to me seems that it is a hardware issue, and can be temporarily fixed by banging on it.
  10. I tend to agree that the Geko may not be the best way to go. I got one for my son. It may be okay for the younger crowd, but I suspect that by 11, she will be starting to outgrow it. If you want something comprable, I would look at the eTrex HCx (the yellow one). I don't have any experience with that one, but with the previous incarnation of it. It was a reliable, basic unit. Still no maps though.
  11. Here is an article in Wikipedia about trilateration, which is about finding a point as defined by three known points and the distance from those points. http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=...oldid=251812552
  12. I don't know about the compass, or the Oregon for that matter, but I have noticed that on the Colorado the accuraccy suffers significantly about 15 minutes before it says the batteries are low.
  13. Apparently the two computers in my room are across country boundaries. One in Tennessee and one in Germany. I used to live in Tennessee (a long, long time ago), but never been to Germany, but maybe I have now??? Seriously though, this could be a cool feature when it gets working. :-) Will there be some kind of configuration option to say allow you to ignore found caches?
  14. Here's one for your dog https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?cID=209&pID=8576
  15. The log date doesn't always reflect the date from field note. It looks like the first log posted from the field note sets the date correctly, but subsequent field notes, with different days, doesn't change the date to the new date.
  16. I was looking at the page, and then the Oregon suddenly disappeared off the list! Strange. But I my though on the touch screen is that with a device like this, I would be touching it all over while carrying it, or if it were in my pocket. No telling what I would do to it. I think for this device that I wouldn't want a touch screen. BTW, I like my Colorado, despite the few problems that remain (and I hope will get fixed soon).
  17. Yes Did a bunch of benchmark and geocaching this weekend with 2.54. Spelling bug was a pain a couple of times. Loved the field notes. Had to calibrate the compass several times though, even when the unit was powered on the whole time. But really like it as a whole.
  18. There is a new version out there now. Haven't tried it myself, but will probably give it a go this weekend.
  19. I just had to go and find the one labeled BUTANO over in Butano State Park. http://www.geocaching.com/mark/details.aspx?PID=HT3303 That was about a 9 mile hike with the route that I took. It was an enjoyable day as I was out there. That was back in 2004. The benchmark Looking back at the benchmark, on the tallest peak.
  20. I see there are lots of answers, except for one, which way to hold it. I think from all the other logs, it probably doesn't matter most of the time. However, if you are using the magnetic compass, hold ot parallel to the ground (I think that this restriction is what makes this a 2D compass instead of a 3D compass).
  21. I find that surprising about Garmin support taking a long time to answer. They are usually very good (haven't contacted them lately though). First off, take a look at http://garmincolorado.wikispaces.com/. It contains a lot of information on the Colorado including some of the problems that you are experiencing as well as others. Here are a couple of answers though. 1. Make sure that the back cover is fully closed. Just closing the latch does not guarantee that the cover is fully closed. 2. I have seen this as well, though it seems to be better with the later version of the software. If you don't have it, get the latest version from Garmin's web site. The 2.51 beta seems to be pretty stable and fixes a lot of problems. 3 and 4. The battery issue is still a hot topic. With alkaline batteries the unit doesn't seem to stay on long, even though you have three bars still, it will power off. Lithium batteries seem to last much longer Be sure to set the batter type to the correct type of battery as well. 5 and 6. I haven't tried the Wherigo, but believe there were fixes in the latest version of the software as well. Read throught the Colorado Wiki from the link above. There is a lot of information there. Good luck!
  22. I noticed that too. I had upgraded both the GPS and GSAK at about the same time, so I wasn't sure which one caused the problem. After playing around with it for a while I figured it was the new Garmin software. I am hoping that they will fix it. I looked around for some previous versions of the Garmin software, but couldn'tfind it. Otherwise the 2.51b seems to be working better. Looking for the next version to see if they fixed this one.
  23. Count me in for getting one. I would personally prefer one of the 2" ones, but the point that stvanme made about the size of an actual monument intrigued me and makes me think again. I do have one of the $35 replicas from Yosemite as well. That was well done, but could be a bit pricey.
